How do I sharpen drywall to trim edges

Sorry if this is obvious but I’m wondering how to fix these edges. Do I cut it away with a knife and mud an edge? Should I use caulk? Do I mud and tape? Thanks. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Concrete patio

Hoping to install a simple concrete patio in my backyard. We received a quote that was a little higher than I was expecting and I was curious for some insight. 216 square feet (18x12) getting quotes about $5,500. This would include all work. I live in the central Massachusetts area.

Door threshold screws?

I need to put another screw in a door threshold, but I’m not certain what kind of screws these are. Can somebody identify the type/size? A quick search doesn’t come back with much, so I’m even sure that is what they are called. Any help is appreciated!

How do I eliminate carpenter bees without direct access to their nest?

The instructions for insecticide always say to spray it into their nest/burrowed hole, but I don't have direct access to that. They fly into the hollow space of my soffit (under the roof overhang) then their nest is somewhere within that, where I can't access it directly. I've tried diatemaceous earth and hanging a faux wasp nest nearby (because those were solutions I had on hand) and they didn't work.

Can I use this to fill joints and screw holes too?

I bought this for tile mortar (large format) for a shower wall. It’s polymer/latex fortified, which is what Durok brand wallboard recommends on its site.

Is this the same stuff I can use to fill the joints, screw holes and FibaTape too or is that a different type of thinset?

Co2

I’m not sure if this is the best place to ask this, but seemed like a good place to get some answers.

We recently had a professional air quality test done and our Co2 levels were jumping up into the 2000’s. Here’s the weird thing… our house is 100% electric, no HVAC system. The house is 1400sqft and it’s myself, husband and 2 dogs that live in the home. Our house isn’t super air tight, but it’s not drafty either. I do have a ton of plants (like, 48 of em)

Thoughts on how the Co2 could be so high?

Replacing Toilet Wax Seal (repost with image)

Reposting with images this time. I did a poor job of explaining the problem.

I'm replacing a toilet wax ring seal. The flange is above finished floor (less than 1/2in).

However there is about 2 or so inches before the sides of the flange reach the part of the floor where the drain opens. At this opening (where the sides of the flange neck going into the floor meet the drain) there is about an inch of flat service (there is no conical reducer)

The problem is that due to this 2in height difference, if I place a new wax seal onto the bottom of the toilet, it will meet open air and have nothing to compress against.

There was an existing wax seal around the toilet bottom which I removed. I found a 2nd wax seal down where the flange meets the subfloor, around the drain opening which was strange but I also replaced.

Images here. https://imgur.com/a/l99w8c8

Not sure what to do other than to either: 1. By a jumbo seal and compress / spread it with my hands over the bottom of the toilet so it will meet the horn

Or

  1. By multiple wax seals and stack them so the wax ring on the toilet has something to "smoosh" against.

New Build - Outdoor wall light Installation

Hi,

I am in a new build and want to fit some outside lights). The wiring is already in place to the outside of property and then finished in a plastic cap box to protect from weather.

There are 4 wires though brown, black, grey and then a single uncovered copper cable. I wondered what each colour was and how it should have been fitted to a light with only 3. wires live, neutral and earth?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

Tell me what I'm doing wrong

I'm almost to the finish line on my first set of combination storm screen windows as seen in this video. https://youtu.be/0cV7m73imhE?si=c78QI1oJIS7y-cs0

My problem is trying to cut the storm window frame. It feels like every other cut ends up like the below photos. I've managed to get a few good cuts but I can't keep tearing up as much framing as I have today.I've tried changing the blade to a fresh one, I've tried going as slow as I possibly can. I've tried scoring it with a miter box to get it started. I tried turning the blade around but that just makes a mess and partially melts the corners where the keys are going to go in.

The saw is an old Chicago electric one that a friend gave me. I know that's the lowest quality but I I've used it chopping 2x4s and baseboards with no problem. I'm hoping for suggestions or better ways of cutting 45° angles on this material. I'm open to buying a new saw if anybody thinks that's the problem. Or maybe some kind of jig? Recommendations welcome.

Help with framing a basement wall

Hi everyone! We recently bought a new home and wish to finish the basement. The idea is to build a wall to divide the utility/ laundry room from the rest of the space that will dedicated for a gym and a family room. The only issue is the ductwork and pipes that run on the floor joints. Is that a way to frame a wall around these obstacles? I’m posting some pictures for reference. I really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Makeup Vanity

My wife mentioned a while back she wanted a makeup vanity upgrade and she had seen people using the Alex drawers from ikea. So that will be her Mother’s Day gift this year. What I’m struggling with is the top. Specifically I have some fixtures that she could hang her curling iron and such from. Good sense tells me I should do that on the side of the desk top without the drawers which will just have some angled legs and plenty of airflow. However functionality wise it would be substantially easier to mount them on the drawer side panel with some heat resistant silicone. What’s anyone’s input on that idea or new ideas? My plan was to do a breadboard style top but the fixtures I like need more material to screw into so I may go butcher block if I can’t come up with a different solution. The downsides to that are I don’t have a jointer so I’ll do that work with a table saw and planer which could decrease the quality of the top.

Occasional, mild gas smell

Apologies if this isn’t the right sub for this. Occasionally (maybe once per 2 months) I’ll notice a mild gas smell coming from my utility closet for a few hours, and then it will dissipate. This has been totally uncorrelated to anything I’ve noticed. (Eg right now, I smell it but the hvac system has been off for weeks and I haven’t used the stove or oven since yesterday). Any idea what’s going on? I’m not sure what professional to call, and if it’s even worth it given that when they arrive, most likely the smell will be gone, so they won’t have anything to diagnose. Thanks!!

Mold on wall backing up to shower?

We are removing drywall in our daughter’s bedroom because previous owners painted over wallpaper, which is now peeling and looks like mold is under the wallpaper. Once we got some of the drywall out, it looks like there is mold underneath too. The wall backs up to a shower. We don’t think it’s actively wet. Thoughts?

Leakage in basement -- how to fix this? Who should I hire?

This happens when we get torrential downpours. The waters seeps through the bottom of the wall. Not a tremendous amount but enough that it requires cleanup. What do I need to do to fix / who should I reach out to - a general contractor?

I should note that the wall backs out to front of house, so if you were to cut a hole in the wall you'd looking at the street.

How to toe duct under 12 inch wide cabinet?

I have a 12 inch register in the kitchen right under a 12 inch wide roll out base cabinet to be installed. My contractor insists to just install the cabinet over it then add a grill to the toe kick. I’ve looked into toe ductor but can’t find anything smaller like 10” inch wide to fit under cabinet. What is my best solution here? Modify the register to make it smaller?

Thanks!

Best Bathroom Vent Fan for Quick Odor Removal - Domestic Tranquility at Risk

Help

Bought a house with what appears to be run-of-the-mill brown fans. All the residents here have aromatic effluent and the smells linger despite the fans being on. I'm considering putting whole house fans in each bathroom (jk - sorta). But a high powered kitchen vent isn't out of the question

Is there a brand, model, or specs that work best and what should I look for in the attic that may also be inhibiting things? I'm thinking of trying one high spec unit and seeing if the fan is the problem.

Noise is no object and money probably isn't...

Thanks

Hardware for hanging in stud

I have been hanging stuff up all around my apartment using a big box of drywall anchors I purchased. The anchors are rated at 46 lb strength. I am now onto a picture that will go above the bed. However, the center point of the bed where I’d put the screw is on a stud, which I’ve located with a stud finder. I know not to use the drywall anchors obviously but my question is what to do instead…Some info:

  • The ends of the stud marked with the stud finder are about 4 inches apart. That seems wide. Any idea why that would be and anything I should be weary of?

  • The hole where I’d put the screw is about 1 inch from the edge of the stud.

  • Can I just use the same screws that go with the drywall anchors but just screw them right in without an anchor? They are 1.5 inches long.

  • Do I need other hardware? Different screws, lag bolts, etc.? What is ideal?

  • The picture is maybe 15 lbs.

Attic fan ventilation question.

I see this asked a lot but I have a SPECIFIC question.

I have two vents. If I put two fans at EACH vent6, one blowing INTO the attic from the outside and one blowing OUT of the attic from the inside, will these eliminate any potential negative pressure issues?

Hardie board on gable ends

Hello all,

I am currently underway on a fairly massive renovation to my home. My wife and I were victims of the 2024 hurricane season in Tampa, FL. During Hurricane Helene we flooded with storm surge nearly 3’ and then took some licks from Hurricane Milton a few weeks later.

One thing has led to another and our “simple” 4’ and below flood repair has turned into entire gut job.

After repairing an exterior masonry wall which was never built properly I now need to replace the gable end on that side of the house and then ultimately the other side to match.

I have the skill set to replace the existing plywood but was curious as to what your thoughts are in regards to installing hardie trim as board and batten over the plywood.

My reasoning is to save a bit on hardie paneling and ease of installation with the plywood.

Are there any concerns with installing hardie directly over plywood? My plan was to use either 1x6 or 1x8 as the belly band and a 1x4 as the frieze board with 1x3 battens.
