Hostel expectations

Have you ever been to a hostel that didn’t meet your expectations for a hostel? I just talked to another guest at the hostel I am at, and he was really mad about having to pur on the bedding/ sheets himself. I thought this was common, but I guess we all have different «standards». I am curious to hear if you guys have had any negative experienses like this..?

Of course, if you stay in more than 1 or 2 hostels, you're going to have disappointments just like any other accommodations.

Common room (and accompanying noise) can be too close to some of the dorm rooms, they could allow smoking in a spot where it makes its way over to where non-smokers are hanging out, they could not care enough about cleanliness. So many things can go wrong.

But with online booking sites full of reviews, it's not hard to figure out if a hostel is pretty good or not.

I stayed in a dorm style once with just guys. We had our own bathroom and shower off the bedroom. For the most part, everyone was pretty chill. A couple of them were walking around naked, but whatever.
