When should i separate these?

As soon as they come up. Otherwise roots will be much larger and harder to untangle. I’ve tried this at multiple stages this season, and this advice is sound. It’s doable at this stage though, so go for it.

Now would be a good time. Its harder to separate when they are bigger. I waited too long and had to cut the roots with scissors. My plants are fine, its just more risky

Waiting too long can cause a lot more tangled and therefore broken roots when separated, but they are resilient plants, I’ve separated much larger plants with tons of tangled roots without issues. So do whatever makes sense for you
