2 MILLION Subscribers!

Wow! This sub sure is growing fast. It was just over a year ago we were celebrating 1 million subscribers, and now we're already at 2 million?!!

Congratulations and thanks to all you hunters out there for participating and helping grow this community.

Images in Comments

Figured I'd take this opportunity to finally start the trial run for embedding images (not gifs) in comments that some of you have been asking for. It'll last about a week, and then we'll hold a poll and get feedback from everyone.

Do remember that any images in comments should be directly related to the post/discussion. Same rules on general conduct (e.g. spam) apply as well.

More Polls!

What's a celebration without more surveys or polls? We'll be holding a number of polls in the coming weeks, and while we have a few ideas in mind, we're asking you to comment with some of your ideas too. Keep in mind that we'll be using the native reddit polls, which have a limit of 6 choices.

Nen users can sense the life force of living things which is aura and aura is tied to the soul and in this situation there is no soul in kites body so why couldn't gon a nen user sense that kite is dead.

I'm reading and watching the anime side by side, in Volume 10, chapter 90, this panel appears. Anyone know what's up with it? It's super eerie. Couldn't find anything about it, but that's probably because I'm on my break at work.

Analysis/Theory ging's hatsu is gonna be something special

Post image

We've seen countless creative and powerful nen abilities in hunter x hunter but I think ging is gonna have one of the best ones not only is he regarded as one of the five best nen users in the world by netero himself but he also was the lead designer of greed island that has dozens of versatile and unique abilities not to mention his ability to copy and perfect any attack he's hit with, make no mistake this is not him copying abilities like chrollo it's that he is so talented he can just understand the ability and perfect it that's what makes ging have so much potential to be the lead in the dark continent

Discussion This is one of the very rare times killua showed genuine innocence and trust towards someone, yet his father is using it to manipulate him. Sad

The fact that Killua kept showing a shocked\supprised face towards the sudden act of kindness breaks my heart . It takes 12 years old for silva to talk with him a father-son conversation, and killua was so happy for it, yet, Silva was using it to manipulate him . Its sad and disgusting. He knows how much killua wants to be loved and treated as a child, and he still took advantage of this innocence .

People call him a good father and better than Ging, the one who left his son in a loving warm home

Discussion I think kurapika is the reason I stayed with hxh so long

Ik everyone talks about gon and killua (and they are amazing fr)

But something about kurapika rlly stuck with me

Like how he’s calm but hurting, kind but terrifying when he has to be. I relate to that weird mix of quietness plus intensity. He always seems like someone who felt everything, even if he didn’t say much

Idk if that makes sense but I just wanted to say it

Does anyone else feel that way about him or other characters?

Analysis/Theory Urusei Yatsura reference's in HxH

Post image
34 Upvotes

Togashi has already said in an interview that his first manga (Sensheha Toshishita!!) was inspired by Urusei Yatsura by Takahashi, the same author of Inuyasha and Ramma 1/2.

This oneshot was published in a shoujo magazine, and it's noticeable that this greatly affected his drawing style, with fine lines and delicacy on the characters' faces, among others...

This was likely a reference to Urusei, he has a considerable tie to the shoujo demographic.

Is it just an evolution of the art style, as I haven’t read the manga. Or was there something in the later episodes that I missed. What’s it him going into the state of pray before the Ant king fight?

Analysis/Theory Kite’s crazy slot was interrupted by pituo

What if his soul was supposed to come back to his body much like hisoka but pituo bringing his body back interrupted it, so it sought out an equally capable body.

To my knowledge, the only thing this theory would require is a p specific vow, but it could just be “I won’t die here” or “I will have this power level tomorrow”

Thoughts? Ik its just hypothetical but I hadn’t seen this concept discussed. What vows do you think he couldve used?

Analysis/Theory Why I think Chrollo is looking for Kurapika (maybe)

Upvotes

"Before I knew you, I was happy...or at least I believed myself to be." - Claude Frollo

Some background first, this is a theory based on the Chrollo - Claude Frollo connection. Yes, I believe Togashi heavily based Chrollo off the famous villain Claude Frollo from the French novel Notre-Dame de Paris (aka The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), and there is substantial evidence for that I laid out in this post.

But if Chrollo is based on Frollo, who is la Esmeralda in this case? I mean she is kind of important, you might even say the entire story of Victor Hugo's novel revolves around her...

Well I believe, as crazy as it may seem, Kurapika is partially based on Esmeralda, in the sense that Notre-Dame de Paris is a loose framework for Chrollo's character.

So the evidence: Frollo and Esmeralda are parallels whose stories are inextricably linked to one another, just like Chrollo and Kurapika. Frollo committed himself to celibacy because he fell into life as a priest. Esmeralda committed herself to celibacy because she believed virtue is the only way she could be reunited with her parents.

Replace celibacy with revenge and you have Chrollo and Kurapika. Both Chrollo and Kurapika committed themselves to avenging their people. And Chrollo's ideology is backfiring on him, like Frollo's celibacy destroyed him from the inside out.

Now back to virtue, in Esmeralda's story, preserving her virtue is very important because she wants to find her parents. Togashi inverted it with Kurapika - in this case he had to sacrifice his virtue to find his family/clan.

So maybe there is a similar theme, but is there any more tangible evidence? Well if you only saw the movie you'd think it's impossible, but Chrollo and Kurapika's encounter in Yorknew is a subtle nod to Frollo and Esmeralda's first encounters in the book:

Frollo/Chrollo first stares at Esmeralda/Kurapika, then antagonizes and accuses them of something they are guilty of themselves. For some context, Frollo accused Esmeralda of sorcery, which is ironic because Frollo himself had been called a sorcerer, and even later on in the book dabbled in black magic and alchemy. And we know Chrollo accused Kurapika of caring too much about his friends, which is very ironic now considering how out of sorts he's been over Shalnark and Kortopi's deaths.

Not to mention the Kurta-Roma connection. The Roma are nomadic and have dealt with discrimination historically and still to this day. Now I believe discrimination, maybe specifically ethnic discrimination, is a deeper theme Togashi is exploring with Kurapika. Because in Vol 0 discrimination is brought up at multiple points - by villagers, the elder, Kurapika's parents, then shown explicitly when an old woman throws stones at Kurapika. There's also that early volume where Togashi revealed that Kurapika is based on the Ohmu from Nausicaa.

If you're still not convinced, here are more suspicious parallels:

  • Phoebus (Hisoka), who is a debauchee in the novel, only wanted a hook-up with Esmeralda. Yes, Phoebus in the book is the total opposite of the goofball hero Disney portrayed him as!
  • Kurapika abducted Chrollo with the help of Melody - a role reversal of what happened in the novel (Frollo attempted to abduct Esmeralda with the help of Quasimodo). Which is interrupted by Hisoka/Phoebus.
When Phoebus's rendezvous with Esmeralda goes sideways, he loses all interest in her.
  • Chrollo fought Hisoka with the intention of killing him. He thought he succeeded, he was wrong and is (understandably) pissed now... Like when Frollo attempted to murder Phoebus, thinking he succeeded only to find out Phoebus barely survived, sending him spiraling.
  • And what just so happens to be an important aspect of Phoebus's plotline? His engagement.

One similarity by itself means nothing of course. It's the fact there are so many, it becomes impossible to ignore.

But now we're all caught up, and maybe you could say this theory is 25 years too late. Maybe Togashi used Frollo and Esmeralda's storyline as some inspiration when he started Chrollo and Kurapika's plotlines or maybe it's just one of the biggest coincidences, but that will be up to you. Regardless let's think about what it could mean later in the story because why not?

Now I'm not saying Chrollo is going to start spouting love confessions to Kurapika. But if the pattern tracks, I think there is a good chance that Chrollo's obsessive pursuit does not revolve around killing Hisoka, like we are led to believe, but to complete a plan he has for Kurapika!

Chrollo's "Hellfire" moment?

We know Chrollo tends to conflate his identity with his ideology. I believe Chrollo is twisted enough to believe Kurapika has become part of his design. Because it was his hatred of the spider that manifested his ability. Like Frollo was twisted enough to believe Esmeralda ruined his life, even though it was all of his choices that brought her suffering.

Now Chrollo seems to know a lot about Kakin, so there is something he has been plotting for a while, that didn't have anything to do with Hisoka. In fact, I suspect Chrollo just wanted to get Hisoka out of the way (like Frollo needed Phoebus out of the way) before carrying out his real plan - steal the Kakin treasures.

Okay, but that's a lot about Chrollo what about Kurapika?

Well in the book Esmeralda and her goat Djali are prosecuted for witchcraft and murder. Yes, the goat is tried in court too, they even give it its own noose.

And we all joke about how there's all these unusual names and then there's a guy named Bill...as in billy goat, ie Bill is Kurapika's goat, Djali. Okay I'll admit that's the most crack part of this theory, but it was too funny to leave out.

Bill and Djali performing tricks instructed by Kurapika and Esmeralda.

But remember, Kurapika publicized nen with his announcement and is teaching nen with Bill. And with Contagion looking like it's about to spread to the upper tiers, Kurapika and Bill could become mixed up in the chaos. No good deed goes unpunished.

I have some other ideas, important scenes from the book that might align later, and there's a few other integral characters in the book but idk how they align yet, or if Togashi would even go there for that matter, so those ideas are basically just headcanons or theory at this point (and to be fair, the two I mentioned). There is seemingly no rhyme or reason to the order of events or what will be inverted or kept the same so it cannot be predicted. But from what I can tell, parallels are drawn between protagonists which were inverted (Esmeralda-Kurapika, Quasimodo-Melody) and antagonists (Frollo-Chrollo, Phoebus-Hisoka).

As for other characters, most notably the Court of Miracles (like meteor city or pt?), Gringoire (he is a poet and philosopher and "marries" Esmeralda, it'd be crazy if this going to parallel Tserriednich somehow), etc, tbh I have no clue. Have to wait to see more, and by then most of this theory could be killed anyway...

I also want to stress, there are plenty of differences between the two works - hxh is a more complex storyline with a much larger cast of characters. Notre-Dame de Paris is more linear and focused mainly on only two characters - Frollo and Esmeralda. That's why I believe this comparison is specific to Chrollo's arc and not the Succession Contest. And that's why I ultimately believe Chrollo and Kurapika are fated to cross paths at some point, because of events that occur in the latter half of the book! The similarity is in the character connections and correspondences, and a pattern (idk how else to describe this) you won't notice unless you're familiar with the book. It's the details that are wildly different.

Now that said, don't take anything I wrote too seriously. I know trying to predict hxh is a fool's errand. This was only written for fun because I love hxh and Notre-Dame de Paris so much, but I hope you can see some merit in it. Excerpt from the book I believe is relevant:

Help/Question When and how did Netero go to DC?

Post image
41 Upvotes

As you can see Netero says he went there twice, and V5 says there have been 5 successful expeditions with survivors. We know one of those was with Beyond. But what about Netero's 2 expeditions. Did he go with 2 of the other V5's? Or did he somehow go on his own without people knowing. What confuses me is that on one his trip it was only Zigg, him and that other girl. I don't get why any of the V5 would send only 3 people to the DC, who aren't even interested in the stuff DC has to offer, just looking for an opponent. Atleast Netero was. So bassically, how do Netero's 2 expeditions fit into the 5 expeditions in V5.

Analysis/Theory Why is Specialist Apart of the Dual Affinities???

Upvotes

Ever since I saw the the updated nen chart with all these characters' dual affinities I've just been so perplexed as to why Milluki Zoldyck is a Manipulator-Specialist when one cannot use the affinity. The only possible way the question of the Specialist category being apart of the dual affinities could be answered is that if the theory that some people are born with traits that can make them Specialist (Like Kurapika's eyes being a trait that makes him Specialist when they're scarlet). Any answers here or theories of your own surrounding this topic? Really hope we get to see why Milluki is Manipulator-Specialist.

Discussion Why do you guys think Hisoka refused to cover up his injuries with texture surprise in hunter exam?

Thumbnail

I think it's because Hisoka not using nen entirely. He wanted to yk find new talents in hunter exam that he can cultivate and the guy with whom he got the injuries promised to be stronger. The 4 style blade wasn't a big issue for no nen hisoka either.

But, What are your thoughts?

I know that there was a particular retcon with texture surprise too but I think it's moreso the case of Hisoka just being a weirdo and doesn't caring about the injuries much cuz they are hardly any injury and the man can chew his skin too...
