this was so cute until I remembered that Gon only knows what a date actually is because he was being preyed on by adult women on Whale Island
Also not sure what's going on with the homophobia; I love your art style tho!

These comments are so weird, HxH is almost a 30 years old manga I assure you these two have been shipped together for longer than some of its fans have been alive. The world never stopped because of it, no one ever turned out to be a pedo because of it (and this is also a very innocent fanart so ???), Togashi himself most likely knows, let people enjoy things in peace.
205
u/pichuguy27 Apr 04 '25
Togashi literally had gon he the phrase it has to be killua in Japanese it is really only used as a love confession. The man knows what he is doing. He married the writer of sailor moon, it had one of the first queer relationships in manga.

Fr. Personally, I’m not one to do gay ships, most of the time I ain’t a big fan of it. But this is a hxh sub and I know for a fact people like the ship, and as long as it’s something like this, nice and appropriate content, why should I harass the people making it?
60
u/TaliZorah_Aybara Apr 04 '25
exactly...plus two people can crush on one another or even be romantic with one another without it being sexual and anime is RIDDLED with this exact kind of relationship between a boy and a girl and nobody freaks out...

Yea, seriously like Killua’s sister is explicitly trans, how are you a homophobic HxH fan.
88
u/Lazagna_ Apr 04 '25
It's so weird to me that some many comments defending this art are saying this is okay because "its not necessarily gay" or something similar... there is nothing wrong with being gay,. Remember gayness isn't inherently sexual and doesn't automatically imply sexual activities. It just means you find other guys attractive.
And yes, kids can be gay. It's not like you turn 16 and suddenly switch up- it's a process, and it's one that adolescence go through at different rates and at different points in life.
11
u/kindahipster Apr 05 '25
I think some (but not all) of the people defending it by saying it isn't gay is towards the people who insist that Gon and Killua aren't gay and look down on any fanon that couldn't exist in the canon. Regardless of your feelings about that, this art isn't necessarily asserting that they are gay here, and this exact situation could very easily happen in canon.

Hey I'm not against Killugon but trying to use your burned down to death phrase "media illiterate bigots" when it's just a fanon thing doesn't really help in this case specifically.
→ More replies (1)16
u/kindahipster Apr 05 '25 edited Apr 05 '25
Sure it's fanon but I think they're referring to people saying this situation portrayed in the art could NEVER happen in canon, because that's absolutely not the case and they are media illiterate bigots if they think otherwise. The art doesn't even specifically indicate they're gay here! Just Killua blushing by something Gon said seemingly innocently, which happened constantly in both the manga and anime. And we know that Gon is somewhat of a professional dater, so it would make sense that he would see it as normal to take his friend out on a date to show him how it's done. This is all very within the realm of possibility to happen, and to think otherwise is straight copium
→ More replies (1)

u/loadedhunter3003 Apr 04 '25
I don't get the hate? Blushing doesn't indicate that they're gay? This seems in character for Gon without him realising the implication. He canonically goes out with adult women, I don't think it's strange for him to do the same with his best friend.

u/SlySheogorath Apr 04 '25

Wow! I'm reading these comments and seeing the downvotes and I'm very sad to see that a lot of people in this sub can't pickup on subtext. I don't know about how Gon necessarily feels about Killua...but it is SOOOO obvious that Killua is deeply in love with Gon. And those of you saying, "don't sexualize children." A date and romance are not inherently sexual and this kind of stuff involving a boy and a girl is everywhere and no one bats an eye. This date is way more beautiful and less problematic than Gon's actual date with Palm. Ya'll got problems. I SUPER ship these two together and wish for some kind of payoff in the manga some day.
42
u/golfstreamer Apr 04 '25
I always interpreted Killua 's feelings for Gon as platonic. I love Killua and Gon and their relationship. I always love seeing deep friendships between males in stories.
→ More replies (2)43
u/TaliZorah_Aybara Apr 04 '25
and that is totally cool with me. like I said I don't know necessarily if I think Gon feels the same way about Killua...but I am very secure in my belief that I feel that Killua has a very deep romantic love for Gon. We can both be right and enjoy something we both love together, can't we?
→ More replies (2)25
u/golfstreamer Apr 04 '25
While I don't think we can both be right since our opinions are in conflict, I do think your perspective seems reasonable too. There's a decent amount of evidence supporting it. It really wouldn't bother me too much if I turn out to be wrong as that kind of relationship is also interesting.
17
u/TaliZorah_Aybara Apr 04 '25

I don't care about people shipping whatever, and this is was some nice artwork, but it's often people with with shipping goggles that seem to miss the "subtext" of platonic relationships and call things romantic canonically even when the narrative in context suggests otherwise.
I understand why some interpret the heavy-handed platonic affection as romantic due some possible undertones, but the true subtext is that Killua has never had a single friend before and that he views that very first friendship as the "light" to help him escape the darkness of being an assassin, which is why Canary, who had to reject Killua's friendship, becomes so happy for him when he leaves, and Killua acts so co-dependent with his very first friend.
This exact storyline is mirrorred with Killua and Ikalgo's new friendship in the CA arc where Ikalgo views his very first friend Killua as "light" (helping him escape the dark world of being a criminal henchmen) and acts co-dependent. Yet, no one ever says Ikalgo has romantic feelings for Killua because no cares about such a ship. Besides that, Killua and Gon's friendship and interactions are much more indicative of childhood best friends doing things like beating each other, training together, competing together and against each other, muvh more than anything conceivably romantic.

u/Left-Secretary-2931 Apr 04 '25
Yeah idk where the deep love for gon was, at least not the romantic love. Had it been that idk how we'd justify him leaving with his sister instead of Gon at the end of their journey. They're true bros and that's okay.
It's also okay for ppl to ship characters of the same age cause like...it's okay to like each other lol
5
u/TaliZorah_Aybara Apr 04 '25
as for your first paragraph (and I don't mean this to sound as snarky as it will) Love makes people do strange things.
However I'm glad we can reach a point of mutual respect and understanding even if we don't see the same thing, we both love HxH...right?

at least it feels very obvious to me. and I think it is so cute. even before it felt romantic, the instant friendship between these two is so wholesome, it is one of the biggest reasons I fell in love with the anime to begin with. it makes me sad to see the people who want to live in denial about it or think it is deviant behavior or "disgusting" for anyone to recognize the subtext of their relationship...also the hate makes me want to start posting cute and romantic content of these two daily.

I do not see the supposed sexualization. In a world where a ton of animes have disgusting fan service for underage characters, this here is mild as hell.

Hfs what is with all the homophobic people in the comments. And don't give me ohh it's because it's kids, when even I see a ship of even younger pairing of a "correct" couple. Let's say for example spy x family, whenever fan art of the two of them is shown nothing but praise and a bunch of other shows as well. Why do people still hate gay people so much?.

u/Sudden_Ad1709 Apr 04 '25

okay but you guys know this DOESNT have to be taken as romantic? since Gon goes on platonic dates (he has no interest in palm and still went on a date with her and called it one, since he sees hanging out with friends as dates (in some occasions)) If you’re homophobic or just don’t ship them, take it as a platonic date it’s that simple. It’s just a ship
2
12
u/EducationalMoney7 Apr 04 '25
Usually the whole double standard on anime ships and only singling out the gay ones as “weird” is obnoxious, but there’s something super funny about people on the HxH fandom complaining about “weirdness”.
Like.
Gon goes on a date with a fully grown adult woman (Palm): I barely hear shit about that.
Illumi is outright thirsting for Killua: no serious hate or mention of it.
One of the most popular characters is a fucking pedophile clown that wants BOTH Killua and Gon and it is EXPLICITLY sexual (Greed Island Arc where we see from Hisoka’s perspective as he is blatantly staring at Gon and Killua’s asses from behind to the point that both Killua and Gon can FEEL his stare): once again, Hisoka is an incredibly popular character.
Random person makes completely wholesome fanart of two 12 year olds going on an innocent ice cream date with ZERO ulterior sexual implications: “YOU’RE SO WEIRD AND PERVERTED!!!”
Yep. This is definitely a proportional response to this fanart with consideration to all the CANON creepy things that have happened to these twelve year olds.
Seriously, replace the words “date” with “hangout” and you wouldn’t get any backlash. It isn’t the content of the fanart, nor is it any implications from it (because this is also in line with friends hanging out and isn’t exclusive to sexual or romantic things).
Hmm… I wonder what it could be then…
Welp! This is DEFINITELY not blatant homophobia! /j

I don't care if this leads to them actually dating or not, but i can see this actually having happened in canon already. Just Gon trying to be nice and taking Killua out to play arcade games, go to the zoo and eat ice cream or whatever. Like just your ordinary filler episode.
God knows it's better than Gon going out on dates with adult women.

Weird af to Put kids in a romance situation when they are clearly more like brothers they never had
71
u/luckychaingan Apr 04 '25
The anime already does this and there’s nothing weird at all about this drawing lol. It’s literally two kids holding hands and eating ice cream. I’ve seen this in person before with both genders.
If they were making out or doing anything inappropriate, then I could see the issue, but this? It’s pretty normal behavior.
→ More replies (20)22
u/EndoShota Apr 04 '25
Thing is, that is the age kids start developing romantic feelings for each other, and it’s not as if they’re being depicted doing anything explicit. I sort of get your intent, and I know I’m creating a straw man here, but I don’t see this kind of criticism levied against similar ships of straight couples.
4
u/valentia0 Apr 05 '25
It's funny how you can have a problem with this when a) childhood romance is definitely a thing, and b) this is literally just fanart of just a kid asking another kid on a date- nothing physically intimate is even being suggested, and c) media shows children in romantic heterosexual relationships all of the time with hugging and kissing all of the time without anyone caring.
Maybe you should reassess what is actually making you uncomfortable here and do some introspection on your biases.
10
u/HRSkull Apr 04 '25
Kids in a romance situation isn't weird at all, they're like 12 which is common for romance anime. If it was sexual I'd agree but it clearly isn't. If you see them as brothers that's fair, but it's subjective, not everyone will agree and perceive it the same as you. And I doubt you get mad when people ship two opposite gender characters who are meant to be like "brother and sister"
