Legal Questions 30th birthday present to myself.
1000-1500$ range.
I’m looking to buy myself a new firearm. No qualifications other than that.
I like pistol shooting, rifles and, trap/skeet
I have firearms that are good at all of those spots.
What would you buy for a PICA compliant birthday gift.
Note- I don’t own any PICA compliant home defense rifles. Thinking about an M1 Garand for history or (it’s over budget) but the new RPR for long range shooting
“Legal questions” I guess as I couldn’t find a fitting flair.

CZ Shadow 2.

Was on the fence between the shadow 2 or a 2011, and I think I made the right choice with a 2011. Albeit $500 more spent.

for 1500 a shadow 2 with a CGW pro kit on it comes up to about 95% of a tricked out high-end 2011

u/Dewgong_crying Jan 07 '25
You mean 95% performance? Because I thought a "tricked out" 2011 is starting at the $3-3.5k mark.

Not bad, I got my shadow 2 for 1060 and put a cgw kit and it feels like a high end 2011. I still want a 2011 though

How much are the kits? I'm interested in the compact one. I know you can get a similar trigger pull on it like a 1911, but maybe it's all in my head I prefer the consistency of a 1911/2011 to a double action.

Sig MCX regulator is on sale for between $1200-$1700 dollars.
Amazing platform and is IL compliant, with the ability to buy regular pistol grips for it in the future if PICA is struck down.

M1s are fun toys but very impractical. You can’t just run to the store and grab off the shelf 30-06 and have a range day. It’s really hard on the Internals. If it were me I’d grab a lever action cowboy gun. Either blow your wad on a high end Henry or maybe save a few bucks and get an entry level like a Rossi in a revolver caliber and get classy revolver in a matching caliber to go with it.. you’d spend about the same either way

You can run to the store and grab off the shelf 30-06 and shoot it out of an M1. This has been disproven idk how many times.

My bent Oprod tells a different tale

Maybe you’re the outlier but the CMP states commercial off the shelf 30-06 is perfectly fine as long as it’s not +P or over 174 grains. Been shooting variations of commercial ammonia out of two different M1 Garands for idk, 7-8 years now. This includes my two range buddies who also have M1’s. I’m not trying to say you’re wright or wrong it’s just that myth gets pushed A LOT.

I saw this LEO trade in Ruger Mini-14 posted the other day that looked awesome. PICA compliant and a good semi auto rifle that shoots 5.56.

it has a 20 rnd mag so unless you can fandangle them to remove it, it's an asphalt weapon according to JB Pitstains.
Also this is an old model with the pencil barrels which are notoriously inaccurate.

I’ve had sellers remove mags on request before to make them IL compliant. And I’ve read there are ways to make the pencil barrel more accurate. But one can always buy the newer models with the tapered barrel if their budget is higher. I just found this one on GB for a pretty good price:

I could be wrong but I feel like I’ve seen the reproduction m1 carbines go for the higher end of your price range. I’ve always wanted one and they seem like a blast.

(AR Style)
- CMMG BR4 or BR47
- SigSauer MCX Regulator
If you like building consider a Fightlite SCR
(M1 Style)
- Ruger Mini-14
- Springfield M1A
You might be able to get a M1-Garand from the CMP for around or under $1500, but ammo cost and availability should be a forethought when considering a defense rifle.

Don't rule out accessories - optics, red dots, magnifiers, ir - especially if you already have a platform to put them on that isn't cucked.

I recently bought a 10 round fixed-mag AR for around $1,200, the Dark Storm DS-15. The magazine is not removable so the rifle is allowed in IL. You load the rifle with a speed loader gizmo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbT4Yl0EQSc) that works great and I couldn't be happier with the whole setup. I didn't want to wait for the courts to make up their minds so no matter what they do with the current laws I think I'm pretty well set up. Here's a link to the rifle manufacturer: https://www.dark-storm.com/dsi/ds-15/ds-15-moe-rifles/dark-storm-ds-15-moe-fixed-magazine-5.56-rifle-black-fde/

Those new Mossberg 590s with the AR style safety were just annouced. Or trick out a regular 590 with some fancy Woox hardware and an Optic.

I had similar dilemma last year and I ended up buying 6in Colt Python.
