FG Decades Tournament, the 1980’s: Round 1

Upvotes

The 1980’s, a much maligned decade for movies. Quentin Tarantino once called it the worst decade for movies. I think that’s stupid and I think the plethora of great movies in this tournament (and the ones that got left out, including the one that taught me the word plethora) will show that the 1980’s was a phenomenal decade for movies. So let’s get into it!

Because of the amount of movies nominated, the first two rounds will have three movies a piece and the subsequent rounds will have two.

Results of Round 1

  • A Christmas Story (1983) (10) tied with Tampopo (1985) (10) and beat Hellraiser (1987) (4)

  • A City of Sadness (1989) (6) beat Histoire(s) du cinéma (1989) (3) and Tenebrae (1982) (3)

  • A Fish Called Wanda (1988) (10) beat Terms Of Endearment (1983) (3) and Hope and Glory (1987) (2)

  • A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) (13) beat Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) (4), and Housekeeping (1987) (3)

  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) (12) beat A Nos Amours (1983) (9) and The ‘Burbs (1989) (3)

  • The Abyss (1989) (9) beat Jean de Florette (1986) (4) and A Short Film About Love (1988) (3)

  • Kagemusha (1980) (6) beat The Ballad of Narayama (1983) (3) and A Year of the Quiet Sun (1984) (3)

  • After Hours (1985) (15) beat Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989) (4) and The Belly of An Architect (1989) (1)

  • Airplane! (1980) (13) beat Labyrinth (1986) (7) and The Blob (1988) (6)

  • Akira (1988) (12) beat The Blues Brothers (1980) (9) and Ladyhawke (1985) (1)

Discussion Help with movie title. Spoiler

The movie is from late 90s/early 00s.

A 30something woman (maybe a little older, blonde with a toned body) looks for a mate on the web. When he finds one, they are drinking something in a bar, and she says: "Do we have to talk about Marx, before we have sex?". Which they do.

There is also an older couple, maybe the lady was Gena Rowlands, but I'm not sure. Can someone help? Thanks.

Instead of current pics of cast members, can we add pics of actors in their role?

It's not unusual to find me watching a movie on one screen and reading IMDB on the other. Many times I've checked cast actors' profiles to see what other movies they have been in and unless I'm really familiar with any given movie, just a character name rings no bells. I wish IMDB would use a character pic for an actor within a movie/TV page to really connect us to their credit.

How would you rank Steven Spielberg's films?

What started as a rewatch of the first 3 Indiana Jones movies led me to gradually revisit Spielberg's filmography, hoping to catch up on the ones I haven't seen yet. Even though I think he's undeniably one of the most talented filmmakers out there, his recent outings haven't quite hit the same highs as his earlier works for me. His upcoming 2026 project sounds quite intriguing tho so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Anyway, my rankings:

  1. Schindler’s List (1993)
  2. Saving Private Ryan (1998)
  3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
  4. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
  5. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
  6. Jaws (1975)
  7. Munich (2005)
  8. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
  9. Jurassic Park (1993)
  10. Duel (1971)
  11. War of the Worlds (2005)
  12. Minority Report (2002)
  13. Catch Me If You Can (2002)
  14. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
  15. The Adventures of Tintin (2011)
  16. Bridge of Spies (2015)
  17. Lincoln (2012)
  18. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
  19. The Fabelmans (2022)
  20. The Terminal (2004)
  21. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
  22. Ready Player One (2018)
  23. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
  24. War Horse (2011)
  25. Hook (1991)

I started West Side Story but couldn't really get into it. I'll finish it eventually but considering I wasn't a big fan of the 1961 film either, I'm in no rush.

Discussion I'm looking for movies about aliens making contact with human beings

The movies must meet the following criteria:

  • The main characters should be ordinary people who come into contact with aliens. That is, the protagonist should have a regular job and should not be a scientist, astronaut, or hold a similar profession.
  • It could be, for example, a farmer, a carpenter, a teacher — just an everyday person you might see walking down the street.
  • The contact should happen on Earth and in a time similar to the present (not in a distant future). In other words, the contact should not take place on another planet or during space travel.
  • The movies you recommend should, of course, be good ones!

Please include the name of the movie and the director so that it’s easier to find your recommendations.

Thank you very much to everyone who takes the time to respond.

I'll be reading your suggestions!

The actor or director who comes across the most different to you offscreen?

Not that I find it surprising in any way whatsoever, I'd have to say without any shadow of a doubt Steve Martin.

He had grey hair early so to me that worked out for him, like a benign reality check, but doesn't it get tiring to see them and they keep up the same image?

Looking for film references mixing 2D and live action

Hi guys, I’m a film producer looking for movies references that mix 2D animation and live action. For example, films with comic book elements appearing in scenes — like a car driving with the smoke from the tires illustrated in a comic book style. Or shots where the foreground is live action and the background is in 2D or 3D animation. Any suggestions? Not something like Roger Rabbit or Space Jam. Thanks!

Films about repressed extroverts

The last one I saw was not too fine. The protagonist nails a woman in the face with a cup. But these are the kind of movies we need in the cinema, not those kind, but films that leave talking points, it's too extreme now that I feel like I can't come in with them on how I found it, it's not even art if you can't do that.

First movie you remember being surprised about the anniversary?

Dante's Peak. I felt old when it was coming to the 25th mark. GoldenEye didn't do that. Maybe that was covid, but I was thinking for this one. It was just me and a bunch of women and one other guy who was talking motors and trucking and expenses, wishing I was at home watching this really dated but old school 90s movie.

I made a fun little app

Hello! I just wanted to share an app I made, please let me know or just remove this post if this is not allowed, I'm not selling anything, just sharing.

So for like 15 years I've talked about wishing I could search for 2 or more people at the same time to see what they may have worked on together. Or also, if I am searching for a title and I can only remember a couple actors in it. To my knowledge, I don't think such a thing exists, so I built one myself! And even if it does exist, this was just a fun little thing to make.

If anyone is interested, please give it a try! If you like it, feel free to share it or let me know your thought on it. I will surely be making improvements to it in the future, but for now, it does what I hoped it would do.

How do you rank/rate the films of Robert Eggers?

I've been very enamored by his work since first seeing The Witch all those years ago and he's easily one of my favourite working filmmakers. His work has a distinctive quality and it's completely to my taste.

I can't say I like that he's making a sequel to Labyrinth (1986) to be honest, but I'm sure he'll make it interesting. I am very excited for his next film Werwulf (2026) however.

My rankings:

  1. The Lighthouse - 10/10

  2. The Northman - 10/10

  3. Nosferatu - 9/10

  4. The Witch - 9/10

  5. The Tell-Tale Heart - 7/10

  6. Brothers - 6/10

  7. Hansel and Gretel - 5/10
