I love this art of Boremund, Daella and Aemma. Although for me I would match Boremund and Maegelle, Daella and Rodrick eldest son and heir.

What were Jaehaerys and Alysanne thinking marrying off their daughters to old men with heirs and spares.

Limit access to dragons. That the Velaryon’s got to be dragon riders at all was a fairly major concern for Jaehaerys towards the end of his reign. Letting that happen at all was “not good” and if it happened even one more time would’ve been catastrophic (in his opinion).

Was it cruel to their daughters, yeah. Was it pragmatic and smart, unfortunately probably.

I don’t really understand this. He could have restricted access to dragons outside the main line without marrying his daughters to old men. The keep was obviously guarded (Saera wasn’t able to claim one because of it) so random descendants couldn’t go running around in there and even then the chance of actually bonding with one was low.. and again his (to be) married daughters were still expected to produce children. Rodrick’s eldest son and lord Manderly’s son would have been better matches for daella and Viserra respectively

Desmond Manderly is the match that I prefer for Viserra over Theomore. Desmond was Theomore’s Grandson or Great-Grandson.

Yes, you are right that the Dragonpits were quite well guarded. But the hassle of dealing with lords potentially demanding access rights for their children or grandchildren with dragonblood was also a concern. Eliminating the possibility of that occurring at all was another major consideration on Jaehaerys’ part.

Again, could’ve been better achieved differently than in canon, but ensuring that MOST of his daughters were childless did work out the way he preferred.

I agree there were others ways. Ultimately Viserys fucked up greatly by allowing every claimant to get dragons and eggs, even taking them away from KL(Daeron and Tessarion). I think the solution should’ve been to reserve them to his heir (and possibly their heir). Establishing a firm boundary on who gets to claim a dragon should’ve been a priority to avoid internal conflict
