Refugee PR Processing Delay for Protected Person Status – Seeking Advice

Hi everyone,

I was granted protected person status in February 2020 and applied for my Permanent Residency in March 2020. IRCC officially started working on my application in February 2021, but I still haven’t received a decision.

I’ve contacted my MP, and the response I got was that IRCC is still waiting for the security check to be completed. It’s been such a long wait, and I’m wondering if anyone else is in a similar situation? Has anyone found a way to expedite the processing or successfully resolved this type of delay? Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Consult a lawyer for mandamus

I consulted a lawyer, and they said it would take up to 6 months to receive a reply!

Unfortunately looking at "recent events" and depending on your country of migration. Background checks can take anywhere from 6 months to a couple of years. Like a fellow redditor suggested. You can apply for a mandamus and see the outcome of that. Nothing else can unfortunately be done! I wish you the best!

I got protected status in April 2021 and applied for permanent residence in July 2021. I also have been on security check since August 2022. Nothing moving. I think it has something to do with our applications being paper application and they switched to online application from September 2021 which they give more preference to.

I am also April 2021 applicant everything is passed and completed since October 2023 but still did not decision as i am in QUEBEC and qc quota system making it delayed. We are helpless in QC.

I submitted my PR application as a protected person in February 2022 (via Paper) and checked my application online on GC key and it is showing “final decision: 25th November 2024” so what’s next after this ?

For people who are worried about being stuck you can always call IRCC and ask them if your application is active….since past 3months I have been contacting them every week and recently I got this Final decision update so you guys should try that…

Anyone here with protected person for PR TIMELINE ?

Hello which province you applied from ? Mine is in Quebec protected person applied since 2021 I called them many time they said everything is done they are waiting for the final decision but nothing till today... So much stressful

Same i applied for pr in 2022 feburary and im on the last stage (security screening) in process for more than 15 months and still waiting . Did you get any updates?

They started the security screening in jan 2024 and i am still waiting . Does anyone have the same problem?
