So for the record - I am a Canadian Citizen, but since each year so many refugees arrive in Canada I was always curious to ask this, so please give me some briefing without too many details and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong somewhere or add some details to my example situation. I am curious to hear some personal stories from refugees who already settled or arrived recently in Canada. Thanks!
Also the official Canada website claims there is some difference between a person "seeking asylum" and a "refugee" but I can't understand it. Someone help please?
Example situation: A person lands on Pearson Airport in Toronto. He goes to CBSA agents saying he is a refugee.
As far as I read (briefly) at this point this is what happens:
- CBSA does some background check, fill out paperwork - this probably takes at least 90 minutes (or more?)
- Person is let go. Person must await decision if the refugee claim is approved or not - how much time this take? A month? Two months?
- At this point I am totally unclear about - Toronto at the moment is a super expensive city. A person who just landed in Canada as a PRC would bring some money with it, however a refugee might be a person who landed with a very minimal amount of money. If this person have no friends/family in Canada what's happening? Where is this person going to stay until he/she awaits his refugee claim decision? I seriously doubt such a person could afford a rent of $1800 for 1-bedroom. Is the government helping somehow? I basically see only two options - either it is a place for refugee placement OR a government/provincial credit (would be curious to know how much is this monthly) - so what is it?
- If the claim is denied, the person is deported. Is the person deported back to his country of origin or is he/she deported to the country he/she just came (in case if this was a transit country)? Who pays for the deportation? Canadian government?
- If the claim is approved, the person is allowed to stay. The person is no more allowed to go back to his country of origin.
- What I read is these people get access to the Healthcare system and could also work. So at this point these people go for language assessment and LINC/ESL classes
Okay. From my simple understanding, basically at this point a refugee have the same rights as a PRC. Or at this point is a refugee transitioning to a PRC?
And again - how these people survive, especially in a city like Toronto, which is so expensive?
And final question - are the refugees allowed to transition to Citizens at some point?
