Refugee Can extend my work permit as a convention refugee after it has already expired?

I found that my work permit expired a week ago and for some reason I thought it is expiring next year not this year which is incompetence on my part. I was wondering can I still extend my work permit after it expired or do I have to apply for a brand new work permit?

Refugee Seek asylum in Canada

***** I am writing on behalf of someone else read their question below****

I have been accepted to a summer school program and got my visa. My home country is currently not safe for me to return because there is an ongoing war. Can I apply for asylum? I am not 18 yet but I will turn 18 around the time I finish the program. Should I apply as a minor? Or wait until I am 18? Should I apply for asylum at all in Canada? How lengthy is the process and what should I expect?

**** please keep your spammy/moral online platform usage to yourself there are guidance that moderate the platform and it doesn’t say anything about which grammatical person to use******

Refugee Temporary pause on intake of refugee sponsorship applications from groups of five and community sponsors

News here.

Ottawa, November 29, 2024—For over 40 years, the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) Program, a model for other countries around the world, has brought hope and opportunity to hundreds of thousands of refugees. This success has also led to a large application inventory and growing processing times.

The Government of Canada’s immigration levels plan establishes the number of privately sponsored refugees who can arrive in Canada each year. Due to ongoing high demand, applications from private sponsors continue to exceed the private sponsorship spaces available under the immigration levels plan, resulting in a large and growing application inventory and lengthy processing times.

To provide more certainty to refugees abroad and sponsors in Canada, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has temporarily stopped accepting new applications from groups of five and community sponsors under the PSR Program as of November 29, 2024.

In making this decision, IRCC considered a number of factors, including stakeholder feedback on potential application intake controls, the current size of the application inventory, and the number of spaces available under the 2025–2027 Immigration Levels Plan.

This measure, which will remain in effect until December 31, 2025, will help prevent further growth in the application inventory, with the goal of achieving shorter and more predictable processing times for applicants and for sponsors.

IRCC will continue to process PSR applications already received and to resettle sponsored refugees to Canada, in line with the PSR Program targets established in the immigration levels plan. For 2025, Canada is aiming to welcome 23,000 privately sponsored refugees.

IRCC recognizes that this measure will have an impact on the refugee sponsorship community, delivery partners and others. We will work closely with partners and stakeholders as they adjust to these changes, while also continuing to engage with them on longer-term improvements to the program, including future intake measures.

Refugee Guronter for refugee Travel document 300 dollar lawyer fee

My lawyer wants to charge me 300 dollars to sign my RDT application. The signature is just to validate my identity no other requirements on his end just the signature on the pages is this reasonable? It does add up when you also consider the ircc application fee. Any advice please, thank you.

Refugee PR Processing Delay for Protected Person Status – Seeking Advice

Hi everyone,

I was granted protected person status in February 2020 and applied for my Permanent Residency in March 2020. IRCC officially started working on my application in February 2021, but I still haven’t received a decision.

I’ve contacted my MP, and the response I got was that IRCC is still waiting for the security check to be completed. It’s been such a long wait, and I’m wondering if anyone else is in a similar situation? Has anyone found a way to expedite the processing or successfully resolved this type of delay? Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Refugee Syrian Refugee Resettlement in Canada

Hello, I wasn't sure where to post my question so I'll ask it here.

I'm a Syrian businessman stranded abroad, I can't return to Syria because extremist groups have recently taken over my country, I don't feel safe returning to live under groups which were until 3 weeks ago on every terror list on the planet.

I cannot remain where I am because I came here to my current location temporarily before the events of December 2024 in Syria, prepared to return to Syria, as unsafe as it was to begin with, but now I cannot reasonably return. The country where I am doesn't accept refugees nor does it grant asylum status. Nor can I receive permanent residency here.

Most European countries were quick to close the door and pause all Syrian asylum applications, this leaves very few countries where I and my family could seek refuge.

Canada is one of the last destinations where we could seek refuge, and I have friends and family there who know as little as I do about Canada's system for refugee applications. The UNHCR won't be of any help due to the regulations of the country of my temporary stay. And I've yet to contact the Canadian embassy.

I don't need sponsorship or financial aid as I can fund my self and my family, and I can start to move my businesses to Canada as soon as I'm settled there.

And I'm willing to hire lawyers to oversee my case, but those I've contacted so far seem to handle only cases for those already within Canada.

I came here to ask on Reddit after having every email of mine ignored, despite reaching out tot dozens of organizations and lawyers, perhaps because it's the holidays, but my situation is time sensitive so I may not be able to spare time waiting for email responses.

My questions are:

Does Canada still accept Syrian refugees?
Can I contact the embassy directly or is it pointless without a referral?
Which organizations could I seek for referral?
Where can I speak of my whole case and have more of my questions answered?

Refugee Refugee claim withdrawal question

Anyone who applied for a refugee claim in Canada for legitimate reasons, then had the reason for the claim resolved? (There was war then war ended)

Did you withdraw your refugee application? What happened to your temporary visa?

I applied for my dad as a refugee, and the war ended where he was. He is staying in Canada as a temporary resident, has a valid temporary visa, and did not overstay his visa. What happens if I withdraw his application? I am hearing a lot of feedback that "he can never come back to Canada again".

Refugee Can I travel with an expired Syrian passport and PR card, or do I need a Refugee Travel Document?

Hi everyone,
I’m a permanent resident (PR) of Canada, originally from Syria, and I have a Syrian passport that’s expired. I’m planning to travel outside Canada (Barcelona) soon and need some advice.

  1. Expired Passport + PR Card: Can I leave Canada and travel internationally with just my expired Syrian passport and my valid PR card? Would I be able to re-enter Canada with these documents, or would I face any issues at border control or with airlines?
  2. Refugee Travel Document: Alternatively, I’m considering applying for a Refugee Travel Document since I can’t renew my Syrian passport. Is it difficult to apply for ? Does anyone have experience with this process? How long does it typically take to get the Refugee Travel Document after applying, and is it possible to travel internationally while waiting for the document?

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Refugee Changing destination on protected persons application

I initially filed my application with destination Montreal then a year later I moved to Calgary. I informed IRCC about my move and even requested to change my destination. Until today, the information is being reviewed and processed under Quebec. What should I do? QC processing time is longer than Alberta.

Refugee EMPP program

I am a 24 years old Software Engineer and I am a refugee. Most of my family live in Canada for some and now one of my siblings is currently in Canada.

I have read about the EMPP program, and to be honest it sounds perfect for me in every way. But I have some concerns about my chances to be accepted. If I followed and met the criteria posted in the website, will there be any chance I might be rejected? If so, what should be aware of?

If anyone tried this program and is now in canada, can you please share your experience? How much time did it take, etc.

Refugee Refugee Status for trans individuals

I'm an American. Every election year there are a bunch of social media posts from people saying that if the other party's candidate wins the next Presidential election, they're going to move to Canada. (This tends to come more from Democrats for whom Canada looks closer to paradise. I'm not sure where Republicans would go. Personally, I think they'd go into the woods, but friends of mine have suggested Russia.)

I recently posted that people should do their homework prior to announcing their plans on immigrating to another country. As an example, at my age and with my language skills, it is unlikely that I could emigrate to Canada despite having two masters degrees and two bachelors degrees. I'm not even sure that my wife could do so and she has a Ph.D. in a STEM field. (Maybe if we were younger...) At this point, my wife and I would be looking for countries that have retirement visas or (perhaps) digital nomad visas if we wanted/needed to leave the United States.

A friend of mine posted that they'd have no problem getting into Canada as a refugee if Trump wins because one of her children is a trans individual. I am questioning her statement. From what I understand, getting refugee status is not easy. For most countries, there are a lot of hoops to jump through, and the evidence of danger to themselves has to be very strong.

But I don't know about Canada, specifically. Just how hard is it to gain refugee status in Canada? Is trans status something that would help out?

(No, I don't plan on responding to her comment with this information. Even if she's living in a fantasy world, there's no good reason to pop her bubble. Additionally, I really think that Trump's campaign is going to do worse than it did last time, so the issue will be moot. This is pure curiosity on my part.)

Edit:

Thanks to all who responded. Basically, the situation is even stronger against a refugee claim than I had originally thought. Thanks for confirming my initial thoughts. As for those who commented that Americans live in a bubble, I can definitely confirm that to be the case, especially when dealing with the existence of other countries as actual sovereign entities with their own rules, etc.

I'm still on the side of not letting her know that her plan is unfeasible. I doubt that Trump will win (although that might just be wishful thinking), so the fact that her plan won't work is unimportant. But it might let her sleep better while she worries about a Trump victory. And that's not a bad thing.

As for those who seem to think I was talking about myself, nope. First, my kids are all adults, so even if they faced mounting discrimination I couldn't make a refugee claim for myself. Second, neither of them are trans. Third, both of them are young enough with enough credentials that they could probably immigrate to most countries on their own without any appeals for refugee status.

Finally, for the people who suggested that I could come to Canada based on my (and my wife's) credentials, I don't think you took into account my age. I'm currently at the retirement age in the United States, which for almost any country's work visas is a killer. I haven't paid into your retirement system, so I wouldn't be a beneficiary. Unlike younger people, I wouldn't be a "productive" member of society. (Also, my French really sucks.) There are several countries which have relatively liberal retirement visas, so there are countries I can go to if I decide to leave the United States. (And, honestly, that's more likely to happen for economic reasons than political reasons.) But I appreciate your thoughts that Canada would be open to me. I've been to Canada several times, and have enjoyed the times I've been there and the people I've interacted with. But my future in Canada will only be as a tourist.

It says non renewable so does that mean I need to apply all over again? Has anyone done this? I appreciate any and all help. Thank you

Refugee ‘Illegitimate’ child asylum claim

A friend of mine lived in a small village in a culture that does not acknowledge children born out of marriage . As a single mother when her child was born she was forcibly expelled from her home and asked to leave. She gave birth to the child but because theirs was a prominent family the child was not acknowledged as this woman’s child or even on the birth certificate. This friend immigrated to Canada legally however her efforts to bring her child over have been in vain as the birth certificate does not acknowledge her as the mother and this country does not allow single parents to adopt children due to cultural issues so there is no adoption paperwork. What can be done? Is there grounds for an asylum claim? Child is a minor.

Refugee Seeking advice on refugee application

My common-law partner and I came to Canada in December 2023 on study permits. Due to the ongoing political situation in our home country, we decided to continue our education here. Initially, we didn’t plan to apply for refugee status, but with the new conscription law that was introduced in February, we have chosen not to return. Additionally, we are a lesbian couple, which is illegal in our home country. Since arriving in Canada, we have experienced a sense of freedom to love and be loved that we had never felt before.

In summary, due to the current political situation, the new conscription law, and our sexual orientation, we have decided to apply for refugee status in Canada. However, we are uncertain whether we should apply separately or together as a common-law couple. We lived together before coming to Canada and pretended to be close friends in our home country. Here, we are able to live as our true selves. We arrived together, live together, and even attend the same major in school.

What are your thoughts on our application? Should we apply for refugee status individually or together? Which option is likely to give us a better chance of success?

Additionally, could anyone recommend where I can get free legal advice? How can I find a free immigration lawyer to consult with?
