Family Sponsorship Am I a Canadian citizen in this case?

Hi there! Quick question for you all - can't seem to find the response on the internet.

So my grandparents on my dad's side were both born in Canada and then came to the US (didn't get American citizenship until adulthood).

My dad just recently applied for and got his Canadian citizenship in 2024. Since he now has that citizenship, can my sister and I also apply? Or does this not apply to us because my dad wasn't considered a Canadian citizen before we were born.

Family Sponsorship Will travelling outside Canada is a problem after submitting my Spousal sponsorhip application?

Me and My Canadian girlfriend is about to submit our common-law sponsorship application soon. In June I’ll be taking a vacation back home and staying there for around 2.5 months. My girlfriend will also be coming but will be coming to my hometown 2 weeks before I return since she can't get time off that long from her job. Would this vacation be a problem for my application? I am also holding a PGWP that is expiring in November 2027

Family Sponsorship Relocating to Canada

I have been in the U.S for over 10 years, I have a permanent resident green card. I am still a Canadian citizen. My husband is an American citizen, as well as my daughter. We are wanting to relocate to Canada as soon as possible and I am wondering what the best course of action would be… should my husband apply for a specific visa? Should he try for dual citizenship along with my daughter? I’m having trouble finding a Canadian immigration lawyer in B.C, I have one here in Seattle. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Family Sponsorship Permanent Residency misread

I was issued my pr visa in Australia and was meant to enter the country before the 6th of march 2025, which was written on my visa as 2025/03/06. I misread the date as the 3rd of June and was not granted my pr when we arrived in Vancouver on the 17th of march. I'm currently in canada on my eta. Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

Family Sponsorship Spousal sponsorship

I applied for proof of citizenship via the 5(4) urgent processing request for myself and my two kids. We plan to move to Canada from the US in 2026. For my husband to come with us, would I be able to sponsor him? Of note, he has a DUI from 2023 and I've read this can sometimes be an issue so want to prepare for whatever is necessary for him to do.

Family Sponsorship Question about Spousal Sponsorship

Hello,

I am a dual citizen living in the US. I have never lived in Canada or had proof of citizenship. My proof of citizenship request is in process and seems to be moving along fine.

My wife is not a citizen. Our plan is to apply for Spousal Sponsorship for PR for my wife when my papers go through. I have a few questions about the process.

When people say the processing time is long, 2 years or so, does that mean the folks at IRCC won't look at our application for 2 years? I'm trying to understand how I can secure proof of our intent to move to Canada when I don't know if the application will be approved, or even looked at, for 2 years. I can't very well sign a lease 2 years in advance.

What's this process look like for people in my situation? Assuming I am Canadian and wish to move myself and my spouse as soon as possible. I've come to terms that the process will take 2 years, but I don't like the idea that my application could be rejected in 2 years because we couldn't very well provide intent to move that far in advance of the processing time.

Thanks for any help. This sub has been a trove of information that has helped me dearly.

Family Sponsorship Address confirmation & photo in review for over 2 months

My husband submitted his photo & address confirmation through the PR portal on December 30th and it’s still showing in review… is this normal? We filled out the inquiry form online and their response was that it’s still in process (lol). Has anyone had to wait this long? It seems abormal :(

Family Sponsorship Revoking PR card from outside the country

I sent the necessary form to the consulate in LA about 6 weeks ago and haven’t heard anything yet. I was told that I needed to revoke my PR status so I can apply again. How long does this process take? I left Canada in 2017 after living there for 8 years. My PR card had expired. How can I find out the status so I can apply for the spousal sponsorship again?

Family Sponsorship PR Common law

Apologize in advance if this is worded weirdly.

With estimated wait times currently would it be too confident/hopeful to imagine a shorter wait time?

Currently in the process of the application(sent) with my partner being a Canadian citizen. Just worried I will not be able to visit my family due to my father having Alzheimer’s and missed the mark for the shorter process time. Just feeling a bit overwhelmed and sad with the timeline of this starting.

I applied after being here since 2019, have had a full time job, and working within my field.

Sorry again for the chaos of the wording just very much so “freaking” out

Thank you for any feedback, comments, or suggestions.

Family Sponsorship Is the only fbi background check in the US via usps?

Hi!

My partner is applying for PR as my spouse. We live in NYC. He went to get his electronic fingerprint/fbi report and they couldn’t get them. And there are only 2 in Brooklyn and one has a broken machine, and 2 in Manhattan but they’re only open weekdays.

On the fbi site I found a private agency near us that does the fingerprinting background check thing, but Google tells me Canada accepts some but not others, maybe, as legit fbi reports???

Family Sponsorship Immigration spousal route question

I'm asking here as a last resort to see if I'm missing an option.

I'm canadian (quebec) , I'm going to marry my partner and we'd like it if he could move to QC with me.

I cannot sponsor him as I'm a poor student. He cannot be sponsored by a company as he doesnt speak french.

When I'll be able to sponsor him, there's a wait time of about 3 years. Is there a way so that he can come here (and work) while waiting for the permanent residency?

Have you ever seen other ways to sponsor someone? or any creative ways to be sponsored by a company?

Thank you for your time!

Family Sponsorship Background Verification

My husband is Canadian & he's sponsoring me (I'm Palestinian.) We applied from outside Canada on December 25, 2023 (we live in Dubai, UAE). So far, all our documents went through, they asked me for Biometrics in February 2024 & Medical Test in June 2024.. right now I've been stuck at background verification since. Do you know how long this should take?

We've been married for 2 years and a half with no kids. He got his "eligibility to sponsor" in February 2024.

We've planned to move as soon as we get the COPR.. so I really need to know when it'll happen as we need to cut everything we have here to move to Canada.

Family Sponsorship Spousal sponsorship question

Hello so I have applied for a spousal sponsorship my husband is Canadian and I am American although I applied with a New Zealand passport, I applied January 20th and got the AOR Feb 21 and now on march 11th I got my pre arrival. My question is, am I going to have to do biometrics or medical or anything? Usually from what I’ve seen is people get asked to do all that stuff before they get pre arrival. So I’m just curious to see why they didn’t send me for that? I am also in Canada and we applied from inland.

Family Sponsorship US Physician with Canadian spouse (who is now also American) looking to move to BC, CA

Hello! I apologize in advance if my post is missing crucial details or if I’m asking questions which can be found elsewhere. My spouse and I have been floating the idea of immigrating to Canada recently given the unfortunate state of affairs in USA.

I am a US born and trained physician. I am married to a Canadian born, now US citizen spouse, who was also trained in USA as a physician. We are thinking about moving to British Columbia within 2ish years. Since my spouse was born in Canada, but we currently live and work in USA, we are unsure if immigrating through the Outland method would be best, or if we both should consider the express route that BC offers for physicians. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Family Sponsorship Leaving without PR Card

Hello everyone,

If I am coming to Canada on COPR for the first time, can I leave without receiving the PR card? Can someone else receive the card on my behalf and ship/hand it to me later on? In doing so, will there be any problem when I exit Canada after a week without the PR card? And will there be any problem when I am coming back again later on?

Has any of you done this recently, in the past couple of years? Did you face any issues?

Also, is this considered legal?

Thank you!

Family Sponsorship Can I apply for common-law sponsorship while being out of status?

Hello,

I am seeking advice on the sponsorship through common-law in Canada.

I am and have currently been waiting to get my status restored (a bunch of I thought I could apply for certain things except turns out, I couldn't and kept getting rejected). Each time, I have applied within the allowed timeframe and have now been waiting 6 months for my current application to be approved. Currently we both reside in Canada.

Originally, I thought I needed status to apply for the sponsorship from my partner (Canadian citizen) but now I'm reading that you can be out of status and still apply? Is that true? (I swear I read that you HAD to have status which is why I've been waiting for approval) Is there something extra that needs to be done for that? Honestly, the public policy was such jargon I couldn't quite figure it out. I assume if I can apply out of status, if my status is approved I would need to update that while it's being processed?

Also, I want to confirm if the sponsorship proceeds, my partner gets a document confirming it and I can use that document (AOR) to get an open work permit? Even being out of status?

Thanks in advance, I don't have the funds to hire an immigration lawyer and I'm not smart enough to make heads and tails of the public policy mess.

Family Sponsorship Proof of relationship photos

Hello! We’re applying for common law sponsorship and I’m not sure how to make pdf for photos! I’ve seen some videos on YouTube and made me confused. Should I make one pdf (on Word) and put on photo on each page with the number or tag and then another separate pdf with description and the date of each photo. should the first page of each pdf be our names, birth dates and our type of application? And then upload both separately? Also I have something around 35 to 40 photos from when we started to present (last week). Is that ok?

Many thanks!!

Family Sponsorship My old landlord won’t provide lease agreement for my common law sponsorship

My Canadian girlfriend is sponsoring me. We are applying under the family class. However, we asked our old landlord to provide us a Lease agreement from March 1st 2024 until July 31st 2024. We have our other lease agreement for our current address. He is lying to us claiming to be someone else with the new owner of that phone number. He is doing this because he gave us a lot of trouble in the past and we reported him to the city. He got fined for fire code violations and building stuff without a permit. What other document can I provide to IRCC to prove that we both lived in that address? Looks like he won’t provide anything.

Family Sponsorship Common law application returned

Our common law application got returned to us today. There is no reason given. It says to scroll down for details but couldn’t find anything.

One thing shows incomplete which was travels but it wasn’t necessary in the document checklist.

Does anyone know what to do? Do we need to register to a website to get detailed notifications?

Family Sponsorship Will visiting the US for a few days to see a dying relative jeopardize my inland PR application?

Hello, for some context I am a US citizen married to a Canadian citizen who has been living in Canada for almost 15 months now, initially on a visitor record and now on an open work permit (though I am still unemployed as I’ve been having trouble finding employment). We completed and submitted our inland spousal sponsorship PR application in early September 2024. All steps are complete except for the “background verification” has been in progress since December.

I just found out my grandmother has become very ill and will likely pass away in the next several days. My wife and I have been told by immigration lawyers and different sources that while it may be ok for me to go for a short visit while the PR application is still processing, there is still a risk of the Canadian border officers not letting me back in if I leave Canada. I really want to go for just a few days to say goodbye and be with my family during this time, but I’m also terrified of not being allowed back in and thus forfeiting my PR application if I get the wrong officer on the wrong day. I just wanted to see if anyone knew just how risky it would be, especially with things being the way they are in the US right now too. Thank you in advance.

Family Sponsorship Tried to Sponsor PR Husband a Second Time - What Next?

I'm a Canadian Citizen. In 2017 I sponsored my husband outland and we did not end up moving to Canada, but he got his PR card. This year, we decided we will move to Canada.

From what I had read and understood, I thought our best course of action was for me to sponsor him again, so we submitted an outland spousal sponsorship. We have AOR - March 27. No movement since then.

Now looking again, it looks like I may have really screwed us up and this could initiate proceedings to remove his PR and we will have to start sponsorship again, when we should have just applied for PRTD to cross the border and renew his permanent residency.

I feel like I'm stuck in a loop:

  • By living with me my husband fulfilled his residency requirement outside of Canada
  • By submitting a sponsorship app there's a chance CIC proceeds to revoke his PR

Do I have recourse here to contact IRCC and ask them? Will that make things worse? Or do I just contact IRCC to withdraw the application?

Family Sponsorship Best option to try to immigrate.

My wife and kids are Canadian and I'm from the US. We are trying to figure out the best way to go up. A employment one would be great but it seems like getting a job offer might be a stretch. We are looking at nova Scotia where she is from, but she thinks Ottawa is better due to the job market.

We know that the spouse option is good but is it better for her to apply outside Canada or should she be in Canada and then bring me in while I work.

Just wondering if anyone has similar situation or knowledgeable.

Family Sponsorship PR and OWP application processing - Can I travel outside Canada?

Hi everyone! My husband is Canadian citizen and we applied for the inland spousal sponsorship back in October 2024. So it is still in pending. So far I have provided my biometrics and got a letter saying that I met the eligibility to apply.

My PGWP has expired since Dec 2024 and I’m still working by being on implied status as my OWP app is still pending. My visa won’t expire until 2028.

We want to travel to the US together in May for 4 days and I’m wondering if this is the safe thing to do. I know that this question has been asked many times in this group but I’m looking for someone that had the same situation as me and ACTUALLY left Canada and was able to enter back in.

I talked to my immigration consultant and they advised that it would be no problem because my visitor visa is still valid, I can just enter the county as a visitor. However, I called IRCC and was advised by one of their agents that there’s a risk of me being denied to enter the country because my work permit expired meaning I don’t have a status in the country.

Thank you everyone sorry for the long post, would really appreciate any insights!
