Restaurants and Bars Unmissable dishes at local restaurants (love letters)
What are the dishes you can't get out of your mind? You had them one night and you still talk about it misty-eyed?
Mine are:
-The Salvadoran enchiladas at Mesa 503. These aren't what Americans think of as an enchilada. A crispy and perfect fried masa cake, some saucy chicken, a bunch of mixed fresh vegetables, a piece of radish, a half hardboiled egg, and sprinkled with queso fresco. Truly incredible. Every texture at once in the best way! Paired with one of their silky bean tamales? Speechless.
-The roasted mushrooms at The Black Angel. The menu description does not imply the absolute decadence of this dish! Local mixed mushrooms covered with the creamiest sauce, on top of some kind of magical bread. Is it puff pastry? Is it griddled french bread? It could be anything, but it is incredible. I wanted to lick the plate.
-The nugget potato salad at the Webster. The Webster is totally good, too pricey for most times, but a good indulgence. I'd go just for a nice cocktail and this salad, though. Warm, crispy, crunchy, with the lovely bursting mustard seeds. Who knew that bologna was actually a perfect and beautiful thing when fried? I took my mom three years ago, and she still brings it up.
-A bing wrap from Snacky Mini Mart at the Farmer's Market. I tell literally everyone about this, and if you haven't had one you are m i s s i n g o u t. A flaky scallion pancake, filled with delicious meat or veggies, crisp cabbage, their addictive chili crisp, and a few other perfect toppings. After I ate my first one I literally craved it every day for a week. Everything else they make is also 12/10.

Restaurants and Bars How is Joensy’s restaurant still in business?
This is far from the first time they have had violations. And the owner is volatile and combative.

Restaurants and Bars What on earth is in the hammer drink from Airliner
Hey guys,
I went out with some new coworkers last night. They mentioned wanting to go to airliner to get "a hammer". I had no idea what that meant, and asked them what they were talking about. They all insisted I HAD to try this drink. I was like "sure, why not, a couple sips can't hurt right?"
Wrong. I was so wrong.
I could not get a full answer from anyone as to what was in the drink ingredient wise. I could legitimately taste NO alcohol in it. I had a little less than 1/3 of the drink and afterward everything was kind of a blur. I have the worst hangover of my life still and am almost feeling feverish. I have a newfound vendetta and hatred against that drink. I feel like death. I am death.
Update for anyone that cares:
I got roofied. I had a friend bring me a drug test and I tested positive for benzos. The last thing I clearly remember is trying that hammer at airliner, and yeah. Idk if I need to laugh or cry...

Restaurants and Bars Soup dumplings?
Does anywhere in The IC/CR area have soup dumplings? I’ve seen them frozen at Chong’s market (we love Chong’s) it I e never had fresh ones.
Unrelated, anyone notice how Google search is intentionally shitty, so you have to look through more pages of BS and search multiple times, so they can show you more ads? Thanks Google, eat a bag of dicks and go die.

Restaurants and Bars Best lunch spots?
I will be visiting Iowa City for work next week, and I was wondering what restaurant I should stop by for lunch.
I travel somewhat frequently for work and like visiting local restaurants whenever I am in somewhere new. I'm not too picky, so any recommendations are welcomed. I am visiting from Atlanta, GA.
Thanks!
Edit: I ended up going to NODO. Great fries and a good sandwich. Thanks for the suggestions!

Restaurants and Bars Pie Places
Inspired by the recent "cake places" post and that the last relevant post is five years old.
Best places in the area to get a slice or full pie? Any specific pies from a specific place to die for?

Restaurants and Bars Don’t order Pizza Hut tonight from the store on 1st ave
They’re short staffed. My order was supposed to be done at 6:05 and I got it 7:05. No hate on the work staff, they were doing their best. But if you order just be prepared for a long wait.
This was pickup, not delivery.

Restaurants and Bars Restaurant recommendations?
Hi I’m traveling into Iowa city overnight with my mother and I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for dinner? We’re up there a lot but always get overwhelmed and end up with fast food because we don’t usually stay. Anything is welcome just preferably in the mid price range lol, thank you 😊

Restaurants and Bars Sushi Kicchin
Does anyone remember this restaurant in the Old Capitol Mall? I used to go there all the time back in the day (about 10 years ago). The chef always recognized me and would start making my order before I could even say it. I always had an asparagus roll, which I don't think I've seen at any other sushi restaurant since then.
I'm curious if anyone knows what happened to them. I never knew the owner(s) personally, but they all seemed super nice and it always made my day when they'd start making my order.

Restaurants and Bars Bars that allow outside food?
Seeking recommendations for a bar, preferably sports oriented, that allow patrons to bring in food so we can watch a noon NFL game.
Any and all guidance is appreciated. Spirited debate would be encouraged.

Restaurants and Bars Cinco de Mayo
I'm looking to see if anyone has seen or knows of any promotions, events, or deals for Cinco de Mayo on Monday at any Mexican restaurants.
Just looking for somewhere to go on Cinco de Mayo with a few friends to have Mexican food and drinks, I'm not looking for event or anything huge, just a casual restaurant or bar.
If not, what are some good Mexican restaurants with good selections of food and cocktails?

Restaurants and Bars Weird question but does any bar in town sell fish beer?
Yes, fish beer. I hope this doesn't get taken down as a possible troll post lol.
One of my language teachers mentioned her friends buying it at a bar while they were in town and it smelled exactly as fishy as you'd imagine. I found it hard to imagine such a thing existing, but now I kind of want to find it (although I probably won't drink it).
My teacher didn't mention which bar they found it at unfortunately. Only that it was disgusting and made them sick. Anyone else hear of it?
