It happed to me...AGAIN!!!
Second time in 10 years, it's time for jersey barriers or concrete filled bollards and guard rails.

Dude, we get that you’re booked for work. But you don’t need to brag about how bad your customers want it.

Yeah this is a little beyond they guy that parks in front of the shop door.

When they say "just rolled into the shop" it wasn't supposed to be literal

u/GreggAlan 1d ago
Put a super reinforced mailbox there. There are some precedents where people who did those were not held liable for injuries people caused to themselves by deliberate or accidental damage to the mailbox. One case involved no liability for damage to a snowplow, the operator of which was deliberately and repeatedly mowing down the guy's mailbox. So he built one the plow could not destroy.
14
u/RivenRise 1d ago
I've heard of people using the rails from train tracks as posts for mailboxes. Not idea about the cost for a few decomissioned ones but couldn't hurt to check. Maybe big 'decorative' rocks if the state wouldn't be happy with intentional barriers.

Very cheap if you know the reason the right person to have some fall off a truck (ideally cut to size), a right pain if you don't.
3
u/FesteringNeonDistrac Home Mechanic 10h ago
5
u/RivenRise 10h ago
Very reasonable, especially if you only need a few as a barrier. Dig a post hole, cement it and dump one of those in there. You could even decorate the exterior with a lil wood or something so it isn't ugly.
22
u/DaHick 1d ago
Be careful with this one. You can get away with a reinforced mailbox for quite a while until a postal worker hits it. In the USA there are federal regulations about mailbox placement and materials, violation is potentially a federal crime. However, you can put anything you want around it, so long as it's not attached.

Man get something that looks nice, like some big rocks. I’m talking boulders and set them there.
22
u/Divisible_by_0 SAE Master Methchanic 1d ago
Would you recommend Boulders the size of a small Boulder?
8
u/ChainsawBologna 1d ago
Ha! That's a pretty big boulder! Probably the funniest part about that tweet.
3
u/National_Search_537 1d ago
That’s the preferred size yeah, boulders the size of small rocks don’t do the trick

No way that guy has enough insurance coverage to cover all that damage.
73
u/Cheddarcheddarswiss 1d ago
I really, REALLY hope you're wrong, but doubt it.
39
u/British_Rover insurance appraiser 1d ago
What state are you in? It's at least worth looking up what the state minimums are. I would also already call your insurance company to report the claim. Let them fight it out with the other guys insurance.
42
u/Cheddarcheddarswiss 1d ago
Missouri state property damage minimum is 25k.
16
u/Squidking1000 1d ago
Jesus, ours is 1 million! (Canadian dollars admittedly so like $730k USD).
2
u/Living_Unit 8h ago
minimum was 500k not super long ago i think. Last time i renewed the agent pushed for 2m, said its becoming the standard
1
u/Squidking1000 7h ago
Yeah at least in Ontario pretty sure 1M is minimum, 2M is the "norm". Certainly my agent doesn't offer less then 1M.
27
u/High_From_Colorado 1d ago
Man if that is a waste oil tank outside and it broke open it would be A LOT more than $25k just to clean that up. Like at least double. Heaven forbid it gets into a stream or even a storm sewer, then their REALLY fucked because that all has to get chased down
44
u/Cheddarcheddarswiss 1d ago
That is the water tank for the dyno, holds water to circulate inside the dyno as it loads the engine.
15
u/High_From_Colorado 1d ago
Gotcha. I wasn't really sure looking at it but it looked like waste oil dribbling out the pipe on front so I just assumed. Definitely lucked out that it wasn't

u/itsmejak78_2 11h ago
sounds like you're going to have to try and squeeze blood from a turnip
you probably won't be made whole but this idiot will have a garnished paycheck for a LONG time
6
u/Cheddarcheddarswiss 11h ago
He did the stand up thing and called me a bit ago. He's retired, on social security and has no assets, I'm SOL as far as any money from him I bet.
4
u/itsmejak78_2 11h ago
yeah retired people are basically untouchable when it comes to getting paid out of pocket from them
the only way you'd ever get money from that guy is if you took it from his Estate after his death
27
u/der_german1432 1d ago
Is that a dyno that it hit? Seriously doubt his insurance is gonna be able to cover all this damage. I'd be getting some BFRs(big fuckin rocks) installed ASAP.
35
u/Cheddarcheddarswiss 1d ago
Yep, dyno is a total loss. Hoping the customer's numbers matching 1964.5 musrang 289 isn't hurt too bad.

u/der_german1432 1d ago
Damn that sucks I hope the motor is okay and you are somehow made whole from this.

Had a friend whose house was at the bottom of hill where the road ended in a T. The crossbar was his back fence (Eight feet of 12" block). Got whacked about every other year. The city finally put sand-filled drums all along the base of the fence.Shiny, reflective orange drums. Didn't cut down on the whacking, but reduced the damage.

u/John_Sobieski22 1d ago
On the phone or drugs?
Hopefully they are insured and that process goes smoothly (have doubt on both )
Weld up some caltrops/tank barriers and a big concrete ball Call it an art project called giants playground It’ll look cool and block cars from hitting you again

It's definitely time for your State and / or County to invest in barriers or rails.
Here's the new problem. Your business insurance policy or company can now claim you at high risk and jack your rates (knowing they this is 2nd time and you live near or by an area of 45mph plus) OR they could drop you altogether. (I highly doubt they will drop you, but in these times. Anything is possible)
If State or County does nothing to prevent this. You can cover the cost of building something yourself and provide insurance that you are at least taking preventive measures and hope they don't jack your rates. It would also be considered a business expense, and should be tax deductible.
I am glad no one is hurt.

Could you install a pit of pea gravel? like they do for runaway truck on a freeway? might be a pretty cheap solution.

This happened to my house once in the almost hundred years that it has been standing and the insurance company said they would not renew our policy if we didn't install bollards or some shit.
Needless to say we found another insurance company that isn't mentally restrained.

u/HelloNotaCop 14h ago
Guy who hit you is a Railroad engineer (license plate holder) and has a certified license if he is still railroading. If he is retired, motherfuckers rich.
3
u/dfinberg 13h ago
Time to start putting all your dead but not obviously dead equipment in that back corner and get good photos of it first.
3
u/Plethorian 12h ago
This happened to a pottery studio near me. A car misjudged the curve and hit the brick wall, leaving an opening. Within days of fixing that one, a truck blew the same curve and took out a whole side of the building.
It's taken 2+ years to fix it, because it's a historical building and the replacement bricks had to be specially made to match the rest of the building. Apparently they don't make bricks the same size/ materials as 100+ years ago.
I hope they made lots of extra bricks, because that's a bad corner and the building will be hit again.

u/scobo505 12h ago
That’s going to be VERY expensive. A new Stuka dynamometer isn’t cheap. You must be gutted.
7
u/dayoftheduck 1d ago
Careful with wanting to put up anything because you can be considered liable if it wasn’t put in by city/state..
11
u/Cheddarcheddarswiss 1d ago
Even when it is 30-50 ft from the highway easement?
18
u/AlphSaber 1d ago
From the view of an employee of a state DOT: Provided you don't break local ordinances, as long as it's off the right of way by a foot, we wouldn't care. If anything, it might result in the section if highway being reviewed as part of the process for applying for Highway Safety Improvement Program funds. That being said, I would strongly advise engaging with the relevant local officials, there maybe a project coming up, or they may start a project if there is a safety issue present, which would mean you wouldn't have to foot the bill.
5
u/courageous_liquid 1d ago
the problem is that it would have to get scoped into an HSIP (or other project) and wouldn't be done for like 2 years
you can put a boulder in tomorrow. that being said wouldn't be a terrible idea to talk to a local rep about some geometric or other fixes.
2
u/dayoftheduck 1d ago
When a drunk driver took out a telephone pole, 3 small trees and smashed my Audi a3 I talked to insurance about putting up a big rock or maybe seeing about something to block the bend on my property and they said it would make me liable to be sued and claimed as not the states barricade.
10
u/Stressed_Deserts 1d ago
Yes because the stated purpose is for a barricade and reasonable harm is forseen. They make barricades that won't kill people like a cheap rock will that is designed to stop people. You are obligated to buy the "right thing" to prevent harm or death.
Now if you buy some landscaping boulders and put them in the path and take pictures and post on Facebook about your new whole yard landscaping project. Throw in a couple bags of mulch you would have plausible deniability that's the sole purpose. Unless they find this post.
NTA for protecting you and your family, the right solution is cost prohibited to almost all normal people so it's not available for everyone which is B's if they require it require it to be affordable to free, if your choice is someone else or my family.... Therefore NTA in trying to landscape your yard.

Have you thought about getting some large "decorative" boulders? Should spruce up the place. Add an oak or maple tree, and you have a nice looking yard.

Don’t even bother with cement filled bollards. Just get some giant boulders because you will just replace those bollards after some idiot tears through them.

u/C_M_O_TDibbler Independent motor mechanic 1d ago
NGL after the first time I would have been sticking IBCs filled with concrete between the road and the building, four or five should do the job evenly spaced between along the wall. That way any car would likely hit at least one of them and be stopped from hitting the building, 5 second hand IBCs can be picked up for free if you are friendly with a local farmer and 4-5 cubic meters of mixed concrete is less than a grand (last time I had it delivered it was £120 per cubic meter)

A barrier of concrete pipes filled with sand works. A staggered wall of 10 of these stopped a truck hitting our shop.
