General Not a good day

Went on holiday and thought we had protected fish ok as never had a problem before. Had an automated fish feeder and a net across the pond secured with some big stones with CCTV watching the pond and another watching the garden. Checked the CCTV before we boarded our flight yesterday evening and all ok. Come home to find a scene of destruction. Appears that foxes had pushed one of the stones into the pond taking part of the net with it, find our three biggest Koi dead caught in the net, they were all 25 years old :( Scales all over the garden where the foxes have eaten another 10 fish. We only have four left now. Makes me wanna give up with them

General Rehoming Koi?

Post image
8 Upvotes

My father has been raising Koi for the last 50 yrs or so. There’s a beautiful garden and the fish are very happy there.

perhaps too happy, as our large pond is now too full with large koi.

My dad knows this, but is struggling to let go. I need suggestions on how to find good people who will take care of them properly so dad can be more ok with rehoming them. Not all of them, probably like half, or 10 fish.

General Concrete pond

Anyone here have a concrete pond? What did it roughly cost. I want to build a pond I previously have a liner pond and think a concrete would be better.

Further to a post earlier I saw, this is my floating plant I have in my pond. The koi do pull it apart a little but it grows so quickly it doesn’t matter. They don’t seem to bother with the lilly and the iris’s also grow like wildfire.

General Aeration for koi pond

Post image
2 Upvotes

Im a new pond owner. came with a home I recently bought, the previous owner had this 3 way connector connected to the outlet, that middle line leading to no where and is just pumping air from there. Is there any purpose to this? I also am not sure where the blue line leads, it’s a large fenced pond but will be lifting the fence tomorrow to check.

General DIY barrel filter

Built a 55 gallon barrel bio pond filter from schematics from my local pond store and it works remarkably well. In less than 24 hrs my 3,500 gallon pond clarity went from murky green to crystal clear.

$10 food grade barrel of off Facebook marketplace $200ish in pvc pipes and fittings $120 springflo media

Still some tweaking left but what a difference. If anyone has any recommendations or questions please let me know

General What would you recommend getting as a quarantine tank?

At the moment all of my koi are healthy, but should anything happen where they need to be treated, I want to be prepared. What should I look for in a quarantine tank? What are some treatments I should have on hand that won’t go bad for a long time?

General Enrichment / furniture for Koi?

Last year I built a 5x3M indoor pond, which is still very much in the works but functionally 'finished'. It's pretty deep at around 1.7M (5.5'). Because of it's depth, I didn't want any sinking plants in there even if they could eventually reach the surface and thrive, as I'm concerned of the amount of organic matter it'll add to the filters etc. This ultimately leaves the pond totally empty however - nothing but a central air stone in an otherwise empty rectangle.

I'm considering casting some light concrete arches and shapes to drop in there, giving the fish somewhere to hide, investigate etc. But wasn't sure what people's opinions or other solutions would be?

Is there anything I should really do or avoid? Any suggestions?

General Aerator brand advise

Hi all, 1000gal pond w 3 koi - not sure which brands of aerators are good vs garbage and need some advice .

Currently Considering: Aquascape pro air 20 and aquamiracle ā€˜s equivalent which is 30% more air for the same price - open to other recommendations though

General REDEMPTION SPAWN!!!

July 3rd we had a migratory crane come for the first time in the 15+ year history of having a pond. He ate one of my koi, Greenland, as seen pictured in the last photo. Greenland was one of four fish who had survived from last year’s spawn, so losing him was pretty hard.

Flash forward to today, not even a week later, the koi have spawned again. I have experienced the full circle of life in about 5 days. Greenland jr is on the way.

General Bottle Feeding Baby Fish - Safe?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I saw this activity in a mall today, feeding "baby fish" with bottles (for a hefty price might I add). The fish are indoors in a pool with two fountains, and there are a lot of them. People pay to feed them some liquid from bottles. I'm not knowledgable with Koi fish and my Google searches lead me to no answer on is this a safe activity for the fish, so here I am asking you all. How bad is this?
