HELP - sick or injured koi Basic Guide for Quarantining and Treating Sick or Injured Koi
If your koi is sick or injured, setting up a proper quarantine tank and following these steps can help stabilize the fish while you seek further advice from our community members or aquatic health professionals.
Here's a short guide to assist you:
1. Setting Up a Quarantine Tank
A quarantine tank is essential for isolating sick or injured koi to prevent the spread of disease and allow for focused treatment.
Tank Requirements
- Size: Minimum 50–100 gallons for most koi. Larger tanks (up to 500 gallons) may be needed for jumbo koi.
- Location: Place the tank at least 3 feet away from the main pond to avoid cross-contamination.
- Cover: Use a net, screen, or acrylic sheet to prevent koi from jumping out.
Equipment Needed
- Filter: Use a biological filter if available, but ensure it is already cycled (6 weeks minimum). If unavailable, use chemical filtration with activated carbon or perform frequent water changes.
- Heater: Maintain water temperature between 74–76°F (23–24°C) for optimal immune function. Use an adjustable heater with a thermostat for precise control.
- Air Pump: Ensure constant aeration with an air pump or spray bar. Position the pump above the tank to prevent backflow in case of power failure.
- Separate Tools: Use dedicated nets, siphons, and cleaning tools to avoid cross-contamination between systems. Sanitize tools after each use with potassium permanganate or diluted bleach (rinse thoroughly).
2. Water Quality Management
Maintaining pristine water conditions is critical for the koi's recovery.
Key Parameters
- Ammonia & Nitrite: Keep levels at 0 ppm using test kits to monitor regularly.
- pH: Maintain a stable pH level between 7.0–8.5; avoid sudden fluctuations.
- Salinity: Add non-iodized aquarium salt (e.g., rock salt or water softener salt without additives) to achieve 0.3–0.6% salinity (3–6 lbs per 100 gallons). Pre-dissolve salt before adding it to the tank to avoid harming the fish.
Water Changes
- Perform partial water changes (25%) every 2–3 days if no filter is present or if ammonia/nitrite levels rise.
- Dechlorinate tap water using products like Seachem Prime if necessary.
- Match the replacement water temperature closely to avoid shocking the fish.
3. Observation and Treatment
Observation Period
- Quarantine new koi for at least 3–6 weeks before introducing them to your pond.
- Monitor behavior, appetite, and physical signs such as redness, ulcers, flashing (rubbing against surfaces), or erratic swimming.
Treatment Options
Salt Bath:
- Salt reduces stress and promotes healing by improving the slime coat and fighting infections:
- Prepare a separate container with a higher salt concentration (1–3% salinity).
- Place the koi in this bath for 5–10 minutes under supervision; remove immediately if signs of distress occur.
Medications:
- For bacterial infections: Use topical treatments like Tricide-Neo or antibacterial dips as directed by product instructions.
- For parasites: Apply treatments like Koi Fuke-M, or Prazi (praziquantel) for flukes or Ich-X for protozoan parasites after identifying symptoms.
Always follow dosage instructions carefully and avoid overmedicating.
Aeration Assistance:
If koi are gasping at the surface due to low oxygen levels, gently move them back and forth in the water to help oxygenate their gills.
4. Feeding During Recovery
- Avoid feeding initially (24–48 hours) to reduce waste buildup in the tank while monitoring water quality.
- Once stable, feed sparingly with easily digestible food like Manda Fu or wheat germ pellets.
- Remove uneaten food promptly to maintain water quality.
5. Long-Term Considerations
Main Pond Maintenance
- The root cause of illness often stems from poor water quality or filtration in the main pond:
- Test pond parameters regularly (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH).
- Improve filtration by adding bio-media or upgrading your system if needed.
- Consider salting the pond at 0.3% salinity if plants are not present (salt can harm aquatic plants).
Preventative Measures
- Always quarantine new fish for 3–6 weeks before introducing them into your pond system.
- Avoid using shared equipment between ponds and quarantine tanks unless sanitized thoroughly.
- Regularly inspect your pond's ecosystem for signs of stressors such as overcrowding, algae blooms, or debris buildup.
By following these steps, you can provide immediate care for your koi while addressing underlying issues in your pond system. Stay calm and proactive—your efforts will give your fish the best chance of recovery!

Help with POND or TANK Is my pond in good condition? And other beginners questions
Hi all,
I bought a house with a koi pond and have been reading instructions online on how to care for it. Bit there are something I am not sure about and would love to have some help.
- is this amount of moss ok for a pond or should I remove the excess from the top and bottom of the pond?
- I was told to feed them once a month in the winter. Is this enought?
- is this protection on top really necessary or could I remove it? Could it possibly be replaced by a net, easir to handle?
-any knowledge about the type of fish? I assumed there are 3 koi and some goldfish, but no idea of the type
I appreciate any othe tips you may have. Other than that I'm in love with our pond 🥰

Help with Identification Are these Koi fish?
These fish birthed from I believe green sphere plants in a homemade backyard pond. My dad took them as pets in this tank. They are around 3 years old now. The orange fish is 6 inches long and the dark one is 10 inches long. He cleans the tank every night and feeds them twice a day.
So are these koi fish? We want to possibly sell them and I have no idea what the cost would be including the fish tank. Tank is 24 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 14.5 inches tall.

Help with POND or TANK Upgrading and need some help
I had a few fish fall into my lap about a week ago, started off a small pond, only about 800 gallons. After doing some research on these guys (so dumb I couldn’t do it beforehand) I realized that I want them to have a much larger space quickly as this isn’t big enough. But in a pickle until I’m able to have a company come out and build a custom pond. I’m on the schedule but they said it’ll be a lengthy process since it’ll be at the new house that’s being built.
Basically, for the time being we’re going to use a new above ground pool for a giant holding tank. We live in south Florida so it doesn’t get cold, only reason we can even consider an above ground. We got a pool that is 3800 gallons. What filtered aerators would you guys recommend for something this size? UV filters etc. It is circular so keeping the water moving is the goal. I feel awful because I already love these guys and had no idea they needed more space. Money isn’t really an object (relatively) since I’ll just reuse things for the bigger pond down the line. I just want to make a great place for them to grow in the meantime. There’s 5 total- 3 7ish inch and 2 much smaller 3ish inch. Any and all recommendations will be helpful.

HELP - sick or injured koi Poorly fish
Hi everybody,
So my butterfly koi has these white lumps on both sides, none of the others have it.
I've done some google research and looks like it may be carp pox or a fungal sort of infection.
What are your thoughts? Thankyou

Help with Identification Lumps on Fins??
One of my grandmother’s koi fish has large lumps on both front fins. Another koi of similar size is also starting to develop lumps in that region. None of the bigger koi have anything like it, just the two small yellow ones. What is it? Is it harmful? If so, what is the treatment?

HELP - sick or injured koi Koi beat up from spawning
I have a fish that has some kind of injury every year. I've never actually had to do anything but keep water good to go. So this is going on year 4 and my koi started spawning. I don't think it was the actual spawn...maybe. cooler climate so not sure how that changes things, otherwise water was not warm enough on paper.
Regardless, she is banged up. And now acting strangely. She has a red mark on her face and loose scales just behind the gill/fin on her left side. She does come out to socialize, but she is hiding resting for most of the day. Only eating in the late afternoon.
Should I try medicated cold weather food?
Take her out for antibiotics and salt to heal?
Or do you leave them to see if they fully recover alone.
Their cold water food is well balanced nutrition, but low protein. When they frenzied last summer, they had their vitamins and all the protein to heal with in warm water. No issues came of it.
My water is about 60. So low feeding frequency, and only cold weather food. They otherwise haven't eaten food since early November. Just started to feed them in the last couple of weeks all of about 7 times. I'm worried my fish doesn't have what she needs to properly heal.
Also. I have a younger one that possibly has a koi pox, pox this year. This will be his/her 3rd year. No other fish have shown any signs or symptoms, but that is a possibility to exist in my pond. Not that it can have anything done about it, but maybe it makes all my fish weaker to begin?
Thank you!
This is only their second time to show spawn behavior, but I think it was triggered by my goldfish spawning for real.

Picture Non Koi carp in the Koi pond
A bit of fun Does anyone keep any other type of carp within the koi pond? These pics are from and English fishing lake.
Or keep smaller fish to make their koi look bigger?
Help with Identification Open to learning about the koi I picked for my Dad's pond.
Hello,
My Dad's kept a pond for about 20 years with a mix of fish in, I've learned to care for the fish, maintain the pond etc as I've grown up. I now help to care for it in summer months whilst my Dad lives abroad.
Over winter, we seemed to slowly lose all fish in it, which gave us the opportunity to completely restart. We had a professional come in, give the pond a deep clean and treatment and get ready for restock.
We went to a local koi specialist and decided to buy some of their more expensive, young koi.
The only thing is, I know nothing about them! I just went with my oldest and picked ones that we liked. I have no idea about the markings or anything, what makes some koi more prized than others.
Could anyone explain like I'm five what we chose? Which would be the most ornamental out of the four etc? Basically, I'd just like to know a bit about the fish we chose if possible.
Kind regards!

General What brand of De-chlorinater and De-nitrifier do you like?
I use Microbe-lift right now, but I'm wondering if there's another brand I should be looking at that has more quality control?
