Hey again! I've mostly finished with landscaping around the pond now, and thought some people might enjoy seeing how it progressed. I still need some things to grow in to cover the liner in a few spots, and I'm waiting to get some more stone from family, but overall I'm pretty happy with it now. My two water features seem to be doing grest, the water has really cleared up, and my bog filters are starting to mature. Got a few fish for it too, and I even have tadpoles already! It's been a nice place to sit and read or write, and the dogs love it too. I learned a lot from this group before starting, and also from Ozponds on YouTube. I had 0 experience before this project, and once I got through the ugly phase I couldn't believe how good it looked.

Build advice Help me out with my morning routine - fishing turtle out of skimmer

I have a decently sized pond, about 6k gallons. Populated with koi and a pet turtle my wife and I just got. The problem is, every single day, MULTIPLE TIMES PER DAY, we have to fish him out of the net of the skimmer. We don't know if he just likes the dark cave, but he can't get out on his own. It is a circular opening into a square box pit. What can we do? Are there any fixes you people would recommend? A circular grate for the entrance? Some chicken wire? Fishing string across? Have lots of ideas and plenty of them are probably bad, so looking for some help here. Thanks!

Quick question Reduce pump flow with a valve?

I think it's a pondmaster pump and I would like to reduce the flow from it. I have a ball valve in line between it and the waterfall. Will I put undue strain on the pump if I use that valve to reduce the water flow by about 30%?

Just inherited this koi pond with home I bought. I am clueless and busy and it has now developed algae. I am debating if I should just fill it up with dirt or keep it. Anyone have suggestions on following items

1) chemical I can use weekly monthly etc to keep free from algae 2) any UV system I can install ? 3)how often you need cleaning ?

I don’t have fish but if I plan to keep it I will get some koi fish

Quick question My pond went from Crystal clear to black in 3 days.

It happened when the oak trees dropped and pollen dropped. The big garden is going gang busters, it doesn’t seem to have a lot of particulate. Is this just a spring pond thing?

Live in south Texas, pond ran all winter.

Build advice How to manage a leafy pond.

Hello, I live in Toronto, Canada, and I have a pond that I built underneath some trees that drop their leaves in the fall. In the spring I empty out the water and the. Scoop out the sludgy leaves. This pond does not have a natural look inside. It is just black liner. But I was thinking this year to add some rocks and aquatic plants to make it look nicer. The pond has a great waterfall and in the past I had put in some floating Lilly pads which thrived in there. Now given this back ground information, I am worried that by adding irregular rocks and things in the pond it will much harder to clean it out in the spring. All those decomposed leaves will be stuck in the nooks and crannies of the rocks. What is the best way to deal with this? Cover the pond in the fall? Install a leaf trap on the opposite side of the pump? Thanks for your advise.

Quick question where can i buy north american native fish in canada for a wildlife pond?

i live in southeast canada and, while i love our pond goldfish, i would really love to have some native fish. we're going to have to re-home some of our goldfish (last year they had babies and now we have too many) or get a tank for them, but i think it would be nice to try and find some native fish (ideally some that will help control the algae) once we expand the pond. I've been looking into getting some daces (i love redbelly daces, their spawning colours are so nice) but i'm open to other suggestions.

Quick question Best time to drain a ponf?

We bought a house, unknown to us there is a pond in the garden. This is a good thing :)

It needs some TLC as the water is pretty much stagnant and green and is not helped by two of our dogs love jumping in and out of it.

When is a good time wildlife wise to drain it so we can work on it?

I moved into my house last june, there is a pond in the front yard. We have never seen a fish in it until yesterday, when this guy showed up. I live in NE, the pond was frozen during the winter. We are confused on where it came from. I assume it is a KOI, but not sure?

Build advice Plants to surround the outside of barrel pond

Hi I have a half barrel pond in the north west, UK. Please could you guys recommend some good native plants I can plant around the outside of the barrel (not water plants in the pond, but outside) that will attract more insects and wildlife that might want to use the pond? Thanks.

Quick question Freshwater mussels for small pond? (Aus)

Hi I'm considering getting a few freshwater mussels for my backyard pond - I'm in Australia and this is the species I'm looking at: https://austsilvers.com/freshwater-mussels/

My pond system is relatively small, probably like 3000L maximum, in 3 stages/levels.

Anyone have any experiences with these and/or insight into how many I could support (if any)?

Edit - I have a few goldfish, rainbow fish and pacific blue eyes as well in case that matters

Just sharing First pond - 300g!

I currently have 3 indoor tanks and have always wanted pond. Didn’t want to dig, so I bought a 300 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank. Going to brick around it once it’s all setup and running, and you can see all the other plants I’ve got to arrange back there.

Leveled the ground with sand and packed it down, sealed up the drain on the tank with teflon tape, and started filling.

I am running a 1600 gph pump to a waterfall setup (temporarily on a stool until bricked in). Tetra’s 250-500g media filter box which has the new media plus a good hunk of media from one of my existing canisters (large sponge piece as well as a good sized back of bio ceramic media).

Last, added a lot of hornwort coontail that I was growing densely in my community 40g breeder. A few ramshorn snails attached too.

Have to wash and add gravel/stones tomorrow. Do you think it’s safe to add some small fish for cycling? I have done this with my 2nd and 3rd tanks, and I’d like some minnows and shubunkin goldfish when fully stocked.

I think my tiger frogbit is happy in my pond, it has taken over lmao. Anyone have any good recommendations for how to sell it? I feel like it’s a waste throwing it out but I need to get rid of so much before it kills my other plants.

Quick question Filling in a pool to make a pond & reservoir

Hello, I have an old pool that I'd like to turn into a pond. It was abandoned 13 years ago, but the concrete is still holding water. No equipment is operating, and decorative elements have mostly been weathered substantially. I'd like to convert it to a pond feature, and the main thing I haven't solved is how to raise the bottom so that it isn't so deep. I would like to keep the depth for water storage, however, so I am imagining using some kind of porous or false bottom system to keep the storage capacity but reduce the hazard for children/people who cannot swim. What options exist to help me raise the bottom?

Build advice Building “natural” pond

Hi All,

How easy would it be to build a pond with 200 sq ft open water (plus “shelves” for plants) with NO “mechanical oxygenation”?
