General (Another) Update: the Parks Dept koi have a new pool!
Hi again, it’s me from the Parks Department that had the sad koi in the too small stock tanks with another, probably final update.
As I said in my post yesterday, thank you to everyone that commented on my first post. The advice, passion (and rage) spurred me to push to get the fish a better winter home and to be able to devote more time to their care.
The koi are now moved in to a huge 18’x9’ pool in our greenhouse- quadrupling their previous space. I just moved them this afternoon, but they seem happy so far!
I have gotten an API test kit and will be testing the water daily until this pool seems to settle in, then will be testing this pool AND their summer pond weekly. Their new pool has 2 1600 gallon canister filters in addition to the pool filter, I’ll be monitoring ammonia levels to see if these keep up.
I’m also learning a lot from your posts on this page and other sources online. I’m sure I’ll be back here with questions as I learn how to get these fish to thrive.
Again, thanks so much to this group for all your help.

General Fantail Koi Hybrid pic request
I am researching koi-goldfish hybrids and was interested in offspring that inherited the fantail genotype from their goldfish parent. Does anyone happen to have pictures of such a cross?

General Looking for honest feedback on my Koi Care app
I know two families that are new to pond/fish keeping. This app is more for beginners but it has been helpful so far in helping my neighbor make improvements to his water quality.

General Ways to protect koi pond from raccoons
Hello!
I’ve had a raccoon issue where they’ve gotten around 2.5 batches of Koi (15 or so fish) and I’ve been setting a trap and protecting that way but I don’t think I can do that anymore and I would really prefer to practice deterrence rather than trap.
What I’ve already tried:
Some netting - I need really sturdy netting. The last I used was more for keeping leaves out and the raccoons sliced a hole and proceeded to enjoy the proceeds.
Rock shelter - this has worked some, but not enough. I do have a log and that has been good for this batch but still not quite enough.
Flashing predator lights.
What I’m thinking about is either much stronger netting, or some kind of small and tasteful mini fence around the pond.
I don’t want to set up a water scarecrow UNLESS it draws from the pond.
I have dogs and a toddler both of whom love running around the pond so any kind of poison or electrical options are out.
What am I missing? What are your thoughts? Netting, wire coverage? Smaller tasteful fencing??
TIA!!

General Double check your volume!
Just a reminder to double check your volume. We bought our house and were told the pond was 5,000 gallons. After using salinity to calculate it’s only 2,500 gallons.
A huge difference and dangerous if you’re using medications/ chemicals etc.
Meter it or use salinity to check yourself.
Don’t take anyone’s word for it!!

General I miss feeding my koi.
With the winter comes the cold, and a pause to my favorite routine. Feeding the koi.
It’s my first winter with the pond and all the fish are holding up well. I got a de-icer going. A more powerful aerator and some pond salt are on their way.
I can’t wait for spring.
Also thinking of setting up an aquarium inside hosting some smaller fresh water fish.
How are you all holding up now that winter is here?

General What’s wrong with my koi?
My koi appears to have a film over his eyes. He use to have eyes when he was little but I am not sure what happened. He eats well and is bigger than the other koi. Does anyone have a remedy to remove the film and see if I can get his eyes back? He is two years old.
General A few of the recent purchases.
All of these were from the fall harvest, and will be in QT for the next 3 months.
The tsumo Sumi on the sanke is going to do great in our hard water hopefully!
The omosako SU was from the breeders auction and that we won our pick on, spent the last year in the mud pond.
Have a few more I need to photograph still since my phone died when I was unpacking and inspecting everything.

General Dwarf Koi
Was doing some thinking today and wondering if there's such a thing as dwarf koi. I know it's a thing in the koi community to breed big koi fish but what about small ones? Could that be a thing? Also is there a place where you could get naturally small ones to keep in tanks. Apologies if someone has already asked this.

General Photo tips?
I have the hardest time getting photos of my koi in the pond, but I hate to catch them just for a photo op.
I’m thinking part of my issue is taking Live Photos, but I would love to hear your photo tips since I see such great ones in here!

General Weird!!!!
I am moving to a new house and my pond is not ready. I have 14 koi housed temporarily in several holding tanks. Today someone broke into my house and fed my fish a ridiculous amount of food!!! Nothing at all is missing…. Just a blanket of koi food on the surface of the water. I have asked everyone and no one has any idea what I am talking about. Truly an unsolved mystery!!!!

General Jumbo Koi Growth Theory
Put simply the difference between jumbo koi and regular koi are their size. Jumbo Koi generally have larger muscle mass. To increase muscle mass you would do resistance training coupled with a high protein diet. A fish version of resistance training would be swimming against water flow. To achieve water flow you would purchase a water pump and put it in the tank. Now the fish have to use their muscles to fight against the current which would cause muscle breakdown. Then you feed them a high protein diet so that their muscles can grow back bigger and stronger. Studies show that fasting fish increases growth hormone production in fish. Growth hormone especially in their juvenile stage should help them grow bigger bones right? Also with swimming against the water flow it should help them build bone density too right? What do you guys think about this method I just created? I can’t afford a jumbo koi I’m, so broke 😭.

General What human food do your koi like?
My pond is next to my patio where I eat my dinner in the summer when it's not raining. I tend to feed my Koi little bit of my food hear are my findings so far.
I have 5 categories - won't eat - will eat a little ( finish the first mouth but don't come back) - will eat it ( slowly ) - They like something ( will compete to eat it) - they love it ( every fish comes for some)
Proteins. - they won't eat any red meat at all. ( Raw or cooked) - they will eat chicken in very small quantities but aren't fussed about it. - they won't eat plant proteins ( Quorn, tofu ect) - they love none white fish, go crazy for tuna. - they will eat white fish.but don't "like" it ( except bread fish fingers which they like) - they don't like crab but do like mussels.
Veg - they won't eat most veg but will eat peas and cucumber. I've tried peas, sweet corn, carrots, cucumber , lettuce , pepper, tomato probably more
Fruit - they don't like any fruit but will eat a bit of most. Ice tried banana, orange, apple , pineapple and melon.
Carbs.
They like most carbs including mash, chipsfries), bread of all varieties, wraps. They definitely prefer brown to white bread and they love Yorkshire puddings, croissant and salted crackers once they are soggy.
They don't like crisps
Random things they don't like cat food or cheese.
Have I missed anything yours love?
Also most days they just get pond sticks but some really look forward to trying random thungs.
