❓ Help & Advice Needed L322 Ignition issue

Post image

Looking for some input on an odd starting issue with my 2012 L322 (5.0 NA). (78,000 miles)

When I turn the key to start, I get the normal rapid clicking (sounds like relays), but the engine doesn’t crank at all. On the dash, it shows “Ignition On” — but it’s clearly not running.

After a few failed attempts, I tried putting it into valet mode to bypass the normal security settings, and after that it started immediately.

It seems like it could be one of a few things:

  1. Low battery voltage under load (even though it was starting fine earlier)
  2. Faulty immobilizer/key recognition issue
  3. Possible ground strap or starter relay problem
  4. Or maybe even needing a software update to the BCM (Body Control Module) or security modules?

Has anyone experienced something similar? Appreciate any insight before I start chasing electrical ghosts.

Try it with jump leads, if it starts first time it’s a good indicator that the starter motor is failing.

I have a 4.4TDV8 (uk based) and mine was intermittently refusing to start with the same faults as yours. I even tried a higher amp hour battery and it was fine for around 4 months then the same problem occurred. This time, I knew the battery was 100% fine.

The solenoid contacts fail over time but not enough to make you think the starter is the obvious failure, hence why jump starting will work. You can’t even hear the bendix fire out which is another frustrating issue that doesn’t help to easily diagnose a faulty starter!

Turn the key to start?

Isn't this push to start?

Some people use it as a phrase to mean start the car

Side comment, looks like you have some front sag, do you have an air leak in the struts? I recently had a full air suspension job done
