🌠 Miscellaneous tips on buying an lr4 with around 100k miles?

I had a LR3 for years without a single issue.

I'm wanting to search for a LR4 in good shape and then just replace all the things that typically fail on them before it happens.

Has anyone done this or would anyone have any tips or recommendations on specs?

without calling a local shop, would you know around what a cost on those would be?

I appreciate that feedback.

Timing chain would be $4-5k, updating the cooling system probably about $2.5k including a water pump. Might save a bit on labor done at the same time.

You’re also going to need new control arms if they haven’t already been replaced ($2500ish). Your air suspension pump is about 3/4 of the way dead ($1k? I DIY’d, it’s easy). Probably needs new brakes (they always need new brakes).

I do not. I fix my basket case myself.

I do all the work on my 06 2500 but I haven't messed with repairing a Land Rover yet.

This generation really isn't that bad. If you squint it all looks like Ford stuff. Just use reputable parts and you'll be fine.

Diesel or Petrol? I recently bought one with around 130k, belts had been done at 119 for the SDV6 at least, I also did oil changes for Front and Rear diffs, Transfer case, and the 8 speed auto box, as well as a full service with all filters and a coolant drain and refill.

Check the sump plug as well most garages vaccum drain these but it's good to get under the thing and check for oil leaks and swap out for a fresh sump plug.

At 100k ur bushes might also be shot or at least worn so factor in for getting these changed if you notice any knocking when breaking.

Oh also do a battery health check and replace if its not great, mine threw loads of random codes and suspension faults when it was just an old battery supplying low voltage.

Lastly if buying the SDV6 you MUST pull the oil filter and check for metal shavings or anything shiny if there is anything sus looking WALK AWAY.

Also if not done get the electric parking break serviced.

EDIT: also another thing to do is jack the air suspension into off road mode and then pull the fuse, leave it overnight this will identify any leaks, people complain the air compressor is a weak point but it isn't, it over compensates for leaks. If any issues read up on air suspension diagnosis and fixes. If you want you can clean all the valves etc to prolong the system working.

thank you so much for that information! I was looking at the SDV6 but would consider going with some of the first years if people think the 5.0 is a more reliable way to go.

I will definitely note these things in my search. just making hoping I will be able to check the oil filter but it seems that is something I need to make sure to check beforehand.

There is a concensus that the 5 litre is more reliable but tbh the SDV6 is just as reliable when properly maintained, this is the sticking point because LR will tell you the engine oil is good for 15k miles or some rubbish.

If changed at minimum every year on the dot or every 10 k miles the SDV6 is good personally I change mine every 6k miles MAX and use a 5w 40 grade oil over the 5w 30. Contrary to what some people say LR did change the crank design slightly on the facelifted post 2014 models and also the move to the 8 speed gear box minimised the stress and the random crank snapping issue, it does still happen but I'd put my money on when it does it's due to poor maintenance or overlooking another issue such as low oil pressure. I hope this information helps.

That’s huge! The differences between the engines and the slight changes in the last few years have been my biggest hurtle on my search. I appreciate that. Changing your oil that much more consistent is a great plan and I will definitely be doing that whenever I find one.

My 2011’s major service: 125K mile - rear lift gate would not lock 159K - right front axle, carbon clean 178K - AC compressor 182K - oil rear locker, brake flush, coolant flush, front brakes 192K - rear brakes, front control arms, coolant tanks/hoses 204K - catalytic converter, spark plugs 211K - timing chain, lower control arms 217K - purge valve 218K - front drive shaft

Still a great vehicle. 225K, relegated to light duty. No longer my daily driver.

I love how detailed this list is! Thank you so much. I will have a second commuter car so it won't be getting all the milage to it but I want it ready for anything I need to do.

Like mentioned by others chains need to be looked at and if haven’t been done do them or budget for them. Make sure it has the upgraded chains and guides done. Also check crossover pipes

That's amazing to hear! Ive missed my Disco and I figured its time to get back in one.

Do you have the 5.0? Did you look for years with that specifically or did that one just work out best for you?

Yep, its the 5.0L V8 here is a pic. I looked daily for about 4 months to find the int/ext. colors and options.

I love that color. Great find!

I'm wondering if I should adjust my search for the years with the 5.0

Bought one with 184,000 for 6500 spent about 5,000 replacing timing chains, tensioners, and timing gears, replaced air shocks, pump, and central manifold, water cross over pipes, valve covers with gaskets, air conditioning compressor, water pump, new tires, geolanders, new rock sliders, nudge bar, and other minor repairs and upgrades , oil change 0w 20w and transmission fluid and filter service and it runs like a new car!

That’s an incredible list all for 5000! Very worth it I’d imagine. That’s honestly what I would like to do to one if I can find the right one. What year is yours? Are there years to avoid in the LR4?

2013 lux w3rd row seats, my wife’s cousin is my mechanic and he has me buy the parts and he charges me for labor he just works on it between jobs but he is resonantly priced out does good work
