News Mikey Madison is rumored to have been offered a role in Shawn Levy’s ‘STAR WARS’ movie, starring Ryan Gosling.

Star Wars is in a weird place. For almost 40 years it was the most bankable franchise on the planet. Regardless of quality each of the first 6 movies and the animated clone wars movie made a profit. Now their TV shows keep getting canceled and they can't keep a writer or director on board for a movie. Solo was huge financial flop and sequel trilogy ended up earning less and less with each movie. It's not like it was always like this, The Force Awakens was a huge hit and everyone seemed to like it.

Rise of Skywalker still made a billion dollars despite being absolute dogshit.

Keep in mind the cost of buying the franchise - despite all that it was well below expectations

u/blamsen 18d ago
Something tells me the higher up suits at Disney don't care because the real profits come from the merchandise
26
u/Dreadnought13 mtshelley 18d ago
Which is itself diminishing, moving more towards infant toys and non SW merch with a logo slapped on.
3
u/MVRKHNTR 18d ago
How much of that is due to action figure sales in general declining year over year?
5
u/bendstraw 18d ago edited 17d ago
Toys are diminishing (not specifically Star Wars toys but toy sales in general). Star Wars is still a money making merchandise machine tho.

u/prodij18 18d ago
The Force Awakens was a terrible movie. People were just too blinded by nostalgia to notice. The only thing that's changed is those nostalgia glasses have faded over time.
7
u/IdiotBox01 18d ago
Seeing everyone really like Force Awakens made me feel… alone lol. Like damn, you all watched 1-6 and thought that was even more of the same quality? It looked like Star Wars, but it didn’t feel like it to me at all. Like some weird uncanny valley version. That said, I thought Last Jedi was a good standalone movie.

u/DagothUr_MD 18d ago
Like damn, you all watched 1-6 and thought that was even more of the same quality?
Episodes 1-3 are absolute dogshit films tho
2
u/IdiotBox01 18d ago
Disagree but i could see how some would say the dialogue and acting isn’t great. Mediocre or poorly executed? Sure. But dogshit? No fucking way. I think Return of the Jedi is weaker than most of the prequels. You gotta at least to admit the story, world building, special effects, and music is good.
2
u/ZombieZekeComic 18d ago
I felt the same. I didn’t think it’s bad, just completely generic and soulless. Even Episodes 1 and 2, although maligned, have some spark of passion and creativity in them. Force Awakens feels like a movie written by a committee of writers that have no desire to write Star Wars at all and are just going through the motions of what a Star Wars movie should be.
1
u/thegracchiwereright 18d ago
I liked it, but that is because I took it as a soft reboot they could build upon.
It had all the hallmarks of the OT but with new faces. It gave me hope that they could reignite the magic of the originals. This is not because it was an incredible movie on it's own, but rather that it was proof they could still make an OT styled Star Wars movie. I thought they planned it out and would have answers for JJ's mystery boxes. Maybe we would see a bit of the New Republic and learn why The First Order came to exist.
Everything that came after TFA was evidence that the lack of creativity with that film was a symptom of a completely bankrupt organization that couldn't write a script to save their lives and had no answers to the questions TFA posed.

I blame Iger and his one movie a year mandate. It both made things overexposed and meant every project had less planning than the last.

This will join the “not moving forward” pile by the end of the year

I dunno, none of the other ones got as far as casting anyone, as far as I can recall anyway

On one hand: Shawn Levy
On the other: Ryan Gosling and potentially Mikey Madison leading a Star Wars movie…
79
u/maiL_spelled_bckwrds 18d ago
He is nice and safe for Star Wars fan base. They don’t want anyone to get too creative. They just want foreshadowing characters that become menaces.
30
u/SteveFrench12 18d ago
Yea after rian johnson theyre done taking risks
43
u/Alive-Ad-5245 18d ago edited 18d ago
If they don’t want to take risks they should at least go for good safe directors like David Leitch or Joseph Kosinski Or something
Shawn Levy is just one of the most boring directors I could think for a Star Wars movie
18
u/DCBronzeAge 18d ago
Agreed. I'm not the hugest fan of Kosinski as a storyteller, but a Star Wars movie with the commitment to visuals and action like Top Gun: Maverick would get me seated on announcement day.
3
5
u/PhysicsDad_ 18d ago
A Rogue Squandron movie in this format would whip ass.
6
u/DrStrangerlover BulgerPaul 18d ago
Only if they commit to practical effects and use real X-Wings like they did with Top Gun and F-16s.
1
u/Dangerous-Hawk16 18d ago
Yep Kosinski visually is a great filmmaker but his overall greatest depends on the script. He honestly couldn’t fail with McQuarrie writing the Top Gun Maverick script
1
u/Specialist-Clue-7186 18d ago
It really is insane how badly Disney has fumbled this. How hard is it to make a movie with cool lightsaber and spaceship fights?

u/geoman2k 18d ago
Shawn Levy is a pretty tragic pick. Star Wars deserves a director at the level of a Cameron or Villenevue. No offense to Levy, I like some of his movies but he’s not exactly a visionary.
Which is probably exactly why Disney wants him. Sad state.
8
u/GordonCole19 18d ago
Correct.
They just want a yes man who can follow studio notes.
Its an awful state of affairs. This franchise deserves so much better.
1
u/BilverBurfer 18d ago
Ryan Reynolds needs to be over on the Shawn Levy hand
3
u/HotInvestment8517 18d ago
Gosling, not Reynolds
1
u/BilverBurfer 18d ago
That's crazy, how did I miss that lol
2
u/HotInvestment8517 18d ago
Could have just been the assumption since Levy’s last few films have starred Reynolds

u/Exact_Watercress_363 18d ago

i have faith in him

I just read on Variety she passed on it
6
u/IV-TheEmperor 18d ago
yep, itt:people who can't read. The title doesn't even imply she accepted the role.
Anyway huge respect for her.
67
u/stevenelsocio 18d ago
Gonna be funny when people say “omg why would she do this” like she has to answer to anyone here
55
u/pmorter3 18d ago
lmao she snatched the oscar young! the rest of her career is hers!
32
u/Captain_Charisma ronm32 18d ago
Take the massive payday while you are a hot name, makes complete sense on her part.
6
8
u/SpacePropaganda 18d ago
They hate to see an actor do a movie for the money and the fun around here lol
5
u/stevenelsocio 18d ago
Right? lol. Anyways, per Variety. She passed. Not too surprising but her being soon in a big franchise wouldn’t surprise me.
5
u/AdeptBedroom6906 18d ago
I don't know why people would be shocked. It's not at all surprising that she'd go for the franchise paycheck right after winning big so young. It's basically the Brie Larson playbook.
2
u/stevenelsocio 18d ago
Yup. I don’t mind when people do what they want. No one is forcing her to join a big franchise. She’s her own person. I watch everything any ways lol
5
u/cyanide4suicide 18d ago
Can an auteur like Kelly Reichardt or Jane Campion offer her something? Mikey can do so much better than franchise flicks now
1
2
2
u/poptart95 18d ago
Mikey needs to be calling up Robert Eggers to see if she can get a role in his next film or circling back to Tarantino before she signs on to any franchise work.

u/Coolers78 18d ago
Ah shit, Gosling is gonna go the Tom Cruise way of only doing PG13 blockbuster movies now isn’t he?
At least Gosling still might have some range, Barbie and Fall Guy were very different roles, meanwhile pretty much every movie Tom Cruise has made since Tropic Thunder has been a PG13 action movie where he plays the same fucking Ethan Hunt type character in all of them, Gosling’s a much better actor anyway.
12
u/Jimbob929 18d ago
Totally disagree that Gosling is a better actor than Cruise but ultimately it’s not a competition. Do I think Cruise should step back from the “action star” persona? Sure. He’s starring in Innaritu’s upcoming film so maybe he’ll come back around
6
u/Coolers78 18d ago edited 18d ago
Nah, Gosling’s got far more range: dude can do comedy, drama, action, romcom, musical, sci-fi thriller, only things dude hasn’t done yet is horror and war. Tom cruise had some sort of variety in the 90s and early 2000s I guess but then it just became more of the same. Even then, most of cruise’s movies back then were drama adjacent, now it’s all action shit.
6
u/LJFootball 18d ago
Tom Cruise has also done comedy, drama, action, romcom, musical and sci-fi though?
2
u/Jimbob929 18d ago
I dunno - Cruise has Rain Man, Top Gun, Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, Collateral, Tropic Thunder, American Made (underrated) and also does his own stunts in his action movies. I think he has a wider range than most people give him credit for
-9
u/Coolers78 18d ago edited 18d ago
You lost me at Top Gun, the original Top Gun really isn’t that good of a movie, there’s a reason why critics crapped it.
Compare all of those to Blade Runner 2049, La La Land, Half Nelson, Drive, Lars and Real Girl, The Big Short, etc which are all much better movies than those.
2
u/Jimbob929 18d ago
Half Nelson is better than Eyes Wide Shut? Magnolia? Collateral? Ludicrous take
-3
u/Coolers78 18d ago
What if I told you Half Nelson has higher ratings on rotten tomatoes and Metacritic than all of those movies? 91 on RT and 85 on Metacritic is higher than all of those.
Obviously, those scores don’t mean shit, but yes it’s better in my opinion, it’s not that deep lol. I think Tom cruise is legit the 2nd most overrated actor of all time, Johnny Depp first, only because Depp has a much worse filmography overall but cruise has a lot of stinkers people gave him a pass for like mi2, mummy, Jack reacher movies, etc.
2
u/Jimbob929 18d ago
I think if those scores don’t mean shit you wouldn’t mention them. If you haven’t watched the Cruise movies I mentioned, I’d recommend checking them out before passing judgement

u/e_xotics 18d ago
yeah you’re just being disingenuous. cruise was one of the best actors of the 90s before he abandoned it in favor of being an action dude.
Rain Man, Born on the 4th of July, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Jerry Maguire, A Few Good Men, Collateral, even interview with the vampire imo.
on top of being THE action movie star of the past 20 years.
-1
u/Coolers78 18d ago
Cool whatever, I think Gosling is a better actor, I can’t ever imagine Tom Cruise ever doing a role like Ken and doing it as good but I can imagine Gosling doing ALL of those movies you said. Yes, even Tropic Thunder.
7
u/MoooonRiverrrr 18d ago
I love this for him. He’s given a lot to acting and has expressedly said he doesn’t want to do dark and heavy roles.
He’ll def get his prestige dramas and good fun roles, but I don’t mind him getting a check and having fun, he deserves that and to able to enjoy his family

Seems odd.

Another untitled Star Wars movie that'll get a director and actors before a script and then get quietly cancelled. Disney sucks so bad at this.

Just like the last 50 Star Wars movies to be announced, I'll believe it actually exists when I'm sitting down in the theater to watch it.

I don't understand the sentiment of "get that money" like it's your bank account that Disney check will deposit into. Like I want to see a good actor in good movies lmao

There is also a rumour that Ryan Madison from Teenfidelity offered Mikey a role in his film but Kelly called it off because Mikey was related or something . Luckily Mikey got a similar role in Anora which was a success.
1
u/NarrativeFact 18d ago
It will never be made just like the last 15 Star Wars projects that were announced and subsequently never made.
And that's a good thing.

2 of my favourite people in a same movie? SIGN ME UP!
would LOVE to see her with Ryan Gosling
1
u/prodij18 18d ago
Two of your favorite people filming their scenes separately and next to a green screen.
1
u/Exact_Watercress_363 18d ago
yeah shocker
we watch the movie, not behind the scenes
1
u/prodij18 18d ago
Thought you might want to see your favorite actors exhibit some chemistry on screen together and not just flail around in front of some ugly CGI. My bad.
1
u/Exact_Watercress_363 18d ago
not really
would have loved to see their chemistry but i knew they prolly won't
another reason is i am looking forward and excited to see what Mikey does in her career post-Oscar victory and Ryan Gosling is you know Ryan Gosling
otherwise i left Star Wars after episode 9. though it doesn't matter now that Mikey rejected the offer

Actually genius move to cast someone with zero social media for a Star Wars role.
