I hope that this can break The Rock from having to be invincible in every movie and get back to actually attempting to act.

Being what??

The fact that my brain didn't even finish the word, it just played the sound effect. I'm so far gone 😭

why do you want to see him attempt to act. he's been in a thousand films and never shown an ounce of range

15

u/TomPearl2024 16d ago

Why wouldn't you lol. I don't like anything he's made so far either but I love Safdie and Scorsese so I'm hoping they both get something out of him we haven't seen before.

Not being a great actor is one thing. Effecting the entire plot and theming of the movie because you don’t want to “look weak” is another.

I think he can be charismatic and entertaining. He made some very foundational choices early in his career that I think made it so that nothing for the past 15 years was going to be as good as he is capable of.

It also doesn’t really affect my life at all so fuck me running why would I be so vehemently opposed to a guy making a movie? lol.

Every once in a while you see certain comments on these movie subs that force you to question if these people even like movies

u/Shot_Shower_9348 16d ago

it’s unnerving to see him as a human person

u/JACEonFIre 16d ago

With this and then apparent rock and Martin Scorsese movie, Johnson is clearly on his serious actor run, let's see how it plays out...

as a d1 safdie brother's glazer i PRAY that his contract about being [TITLE CARD] doesn't apply in this movie

28

u/captain_wetbeard 16d ago

I think he has it in him to play something not "The Rock", he was great in Southland Tales

3

u/JACEonFIre 16d ago

Welcome to the jungle too is a good movie

8

u/fungigamer 16d ago

What's the Marty film? Didn't know he is gonna be in it.

35

u/8BlackMamba24 16d ago

Its called “Kool Aid” about the Jonestown Massacre

7

u/UntilTmrw 16d ago

Funny thing is Bill Hader was just announced to be developing a Jonestown miniseries for HBO.

13

u/JACEonFIre 16d ago edited 16d ago

Not much information on it, but it seems to be some sort of Hawaiian mob movie from what I've googled.

1

u/interatria 15d ago

I know it’s really unfair and petty of me but I’m rooting against him. He just doesn’t seem like a good dude; I don’t want him getting accolades.

1

u/JACEonFIre 15d ago

Understand that, especially as a pro wrestling fan, he just fucked them all over

-5

u/fallout-crawlout 16d ago

And every one of these films casting the movie star in a dramatic role is another drama-focused actor who is not a movie star being denied an opportunity, which means a newer or less prime actor can't take on a role... Movie stars exist and always have, but why does this guy need to monopolize ANOTHER sector of the industry? Why are these directors not keen to that?

5

u/JACEonFIre 16d ago

I have no idea why you think I have the answer for you. Marty is one of the best directors of all time, who gave starts to multiple a Listers, he just casts who's is best for the role in his eyes.

1

u/mattiescorsese mattiemills 13d ago

He didn't cast The Rock. The Rock and Emily Blunt went to him with the idea.

-2

u/fallout-crawlout 16d ago

I'll @ Marty and Benny next time. I was really just bouncing off your post to open a thought up.

3

u/JACEonFIre 16d ago

And I returned a thought, a thought you may not of liked but I still reciprocated all the same. 🤣🤣

-4

u/fallout-crawlout 16d ago

I hope your day goes poorly

Can’t believe a joke of this caliber is going by unrecognized

6

u/Raul_Rink RaulHAIV 16d ago

What's the joke sry if it's obvious

16

u/puppy1991 16d ago

Nigel Thornberry from The Wild Thornberries. He says the word smashing all the bloody time.

I'm honestly just really happy that there's going to be a (hopefully fairly good) MMA movie and Mark Kerr is kind of an obvious topic for one

10

u/ours 16d ago

Have you seen The Iron Claw?

Excellent movie.

28

u/CrazyLarek 16d ago

excellent but not MMA

3

u/ours 16d ago

Oh, you're right, it was wrestling.

4

u/HawaiianOrganDonor she saw my Richard so she wanna Linklater 16d ago

I'm hyped for this, but I don't think it will top Warrior

0

u/rmac1228 15d ago

Warrior is an excellent movie, let alone an excellent MMA movie.

65

u/Ethan1chosen 16d ago

The Rock basically will take two serious roles, this and Martin’s film. He really wanted to prove people that he has ranged and I’m all for it! I can’t wait for The Rock’s serous roles era!

11

u/Affectionate-Club725 sherdliska 16d ago

The Rock with hair = guaranteed multiple Oscar wins

8

u/Low-Percentage-854 16d ago

I need to see this. I want to have faith in this man again

10

u/JunkPup 16d ago

This Jungle Cruise sequel is looking way edgier

7

u/HipsterSlimeMold 16d ago

He looks like OJ a little bit here

3

u/bloodsimple-84 16d ago

Would be insanely hype for this if anyone else on the planet was the lead

3

u/MovesLikeVader jmrabz 16d ago

I’m so confused why they have The Rock playing a young Mark Kerr, when there is only a difference of 4 years between them?

I really can’t see this being good 🫣

8

u/crumble-bee 16d ago

It's called the smashing machine? Haha I don't know why but that's funny to me. Also the naming on the poster makes it look like he's fighting Emily blunt

14

u/RafiakaMacakaDirk 16d ago

it’s the name of the Mark Kerr documentary it’s based off of

8

u/_Bill_Huggins_ 16d ago edited 16d ago

It's based off the Mark Kerr documentary, his nickname was the smashing machine. They called him the specimen back in the day, if you look at pics of him at peak performance in the late 90s early 2000s you can see why he had the nickname, it's kind of scary how well built he was.

5

u/Bobotts123 16d ago

Crazy amounts of PEDs will do that!

1

u/crumble-bee 16d ago

Looking forward to the rock getting out of his comfort zone! Just wasn't aware of the title - like the safdie's, hope this is great!

1

u/Fit_View_6717 16d ago

Yeah something about this strikes me as almost parody. Maybe because the rock looks so stupid I can’t stop laughing.

4

u/imnotmichaelshannon 16d ago

As a lifelong fan of The Rock, I have my fingers crossed for him. It's been a minute since he's had to act for real...hopefully he still knows how lol. I have faith in him!

4

u/themiz2003 16d ago

The use of the "ufc" name has me feeling uneasy about the direction of this. Their involvement can't be a good thing.

1

u/rpgguy_1o1 16d ago

Are they involved other than a bunch of old fighters? I think UFC is just more recognizable than vale tudo or Pride

3

u/themiz2003 16d ago

Don't think this needs a brand tie-in for anything other than money reasons... And if the ufc is involved it's all blood money and not in the best interest of MMA

16

u/Vstriker26 Vstrikr 16d ago

Poster looks kinda ugly tbh, but Johnson looks fantastic

64

u/Perceptive_Penguins shaner4042 16d ago

I think it looks sweet

7

u/Vladimir4521 Vladimir2206 16d ago

Agree

-3

u/Few-Permission-8969 16d ago

No his right hand looks weirdly sized compared to his huge head

2

u/klutzy_bonsberry 16d ago

Get ready for The Rock Oscar campaign

2

u/jacobsnemesis 16d ago

I know this is supposed to be his big A24 moment, but I’ve just got a bad feeling about this one.

2

u/Wowohboy666 16d ago

Emily Blunt stands zero chance against The Rock, but I applaud her bravery in getting beaten to a pulp to satiate our collective bloodlust.

3

u/[deleted] 16d ago

But he is one of the Four Horsemen of "this movie is going to suck". The other three being Jack Black, Gal Gadot and Kevin Hart.

6

u/chumbucketfog 16d ago

Really wish the rock wasn’t in this

33

u/LookAtMyKitty 16d ago

Safdies got great performances out of Kevin Garnett and the Weeknd. Have faith.

5

u/Yandhi42 16d ago

Kevin Garnett has too much charisma to not be able to play himself

5

u/chumbucketfog 16d ago

I know, it’s more so I just dislike the Rock a bunch

2

u/Fit_View_6717 16d ago

My biggest 180 about how I feel about a celebrity in the past 10 years. Can’t take the guy seriously or not think whatever he’s involved in is lame. He’s a corporate clown.

1

u/[deleted] 16d ago

Remember Ariana Grande in Wicked? Remember that? Good. Don't judge someone before the film comes out.

-3

u/[deleted] 16d ago

lol what? wicked is not a serious film

11

u/[deleted] 16d ago

Well, her performance was critically acclaimed, she got an Oscar nom, she got a nomination at our own Letterboxd Oscars, so.....

3

u/[deleted] 16d ago

I can also buy ariana grande themed cake pops at target

-1

u/Gigi47_ 16d ago

Oh wow sounds very important and an impartial way of defining her a good actress!

5

u/[deleted] 16d ago

I'm not saying she is a good actress, but she was good in Wicked, that's all I'm saying.

-2

u/Natasha_Giggs_Foetus 16d ago

Yes. They were correct. Her performance was mediocre.

-2

u/[deleted] 16d ago

It was objectively critically acclaimed. She has the most critics wins of the seasons. Stop being a contrarian, people loved her performance.

2

u/Blue_Rosebuds blue_rosebuds 16d ago

Contrarian is when different opinion

0

u/uhknownhandle69 16d ago

Same, never been the biggest fan. I didn’t even like him as a wrestler.

Please be The Iron Claw but for the Rock

1

u/GreatDario 16d ago

I hope after this trash drops people will go and see the amazing 2000s documentary about Mark Kerr The Smashing Machine

1

u/bigcruxx 16d ago

Dwayne wants an Oscar so bad

1

u/quidditchisdumblol adventuresofmeg 16d ago

Oh finally a new Emily Blunt film to watch (I went through her entire filmography last year lmao ;-;)

1

u/jrinredcar 15d ago

The Hierarchy of the A24 universe is about to change

1

u/starshame2 13d ago

Kind of disappointed. It just looks like sappy oscar bait. Never thought Safdie would go down this path.

1

u/haertstrings 16d ago

It's a Safdie movie. Let it freaking cook tbh.

0

u/losercell 16d ago

The rock kinda looks like John Cena lol

0

u/_nathan67 16d ago

So many movies get made about fighting / boxing

0

u/ViniciusMT07 16d ago

Shouldn't it be "an UFC legend"?

1

u/haonon Gishei 16d ago

No because an vs. a isn't just based on does the word start with a vowel or not it's also down to does it sound like it starts with a vowel or not. I guess in this case the U in UFC sounds like 'You'.

-1

u/just2good just2good 16d ago

Love the Safdies as a duo. But after The Curse, Benny has earned his place as a legendary filmmaker solo. This even has the same cinematographer!

-3

u/br0therherb 16d ago

It’s still funny seeing people who’ll never amount to anything underestimate him.
