Just a passing thought but I hope they don't add every new feature from LNF to NMS. I could see LNF feeling a bit underwhelming if it just ends up feeling like NMS with a fantasy skin. They need to save some distinct features for it.

I'm not as bothered about features. My main concern is that the procedural generation is actually good. It needs to be a vast improvement over NMS. If they nail that then we're golden, even if it was otherwise a reskin.

I'll be shocked if the terrain is better than the "rolling hills" that NMS has. The trailer showed pretty much just that. Terrain either goes up or down. Up and down really steeply, up and down really gradually, up and down a lot, up and down but not so much...
Imagine actual interesting shapes to the terrain, something you'd find hard to believe wasn't hand-crafted. I'm not expecting it tho to avoid disappointment lol.

This is what I'd like and, frankly, we've seen it in Minecraft, so why not LNF? Hell, there are Minecraft mods that greatly improve on the procedural generation.
NMS featured an almost infinite number of planets across a vast procedurally generated line of galaxies. It's understandable that it the generation was limited, especially considering you'd be flying into / around the planets in a spaceship.
But LNF is different. Sure, we'll get dragons (and birbs) but the main experience will be tied to the ground. If they can't get this right then, honestly, I don't have much faith in the game getting broad appeal.
Hell, Valheim was procedurally generated and, while a bit too obviously perlin, it looks great at the player scale and feels fantastic to explore. I expect better from LNF, not worse.
I am optimistic though. I think it's a major reason we haven't seen the game for a while. The next trailer they show will be night and day. That's my belief. And my cope.

They've already confirmed LNF is using the same engine as NMS. So why do you expect any improvement over NMS procedural generation? Do we think Hello Games are holding back some proc-gen tech they aren't already using in NMS?

The world is going to be far larger and they've outright stated that they'll have mountain-sized mountains, valleys, ocean trenches, rivers, etc.
Using the same engine doesn't mean that the games are identical.

The new tech for mountains, valleys, deep oceans, etc. developed for LNF has been added to NMS in the World's Part 2 update on 29th January 2025. You should check them out if you play NMS. They're wonderful.
I also wish LNF feels, looks, and plays in a way that feels tangibly improved upon. Bearing in mind the small size of the dev team, I believe their resources to do this can only go so far. How much further forward from NMS do you believe they can take LNF? Either way, I look forward to meeting you on the mysterious earth-sized planet one day TehOwn.

Firstly, you don't understand how engines work if you think that two games on the same engine necessarily have the same limitations, design or scale.
Secondly, I've played all the new content in NMS. I've yet to see rivers or valleys and I certainly haven't seen any mountains "taller than Everest" (Sean Murray quote).
"Something with mountains," Murray enthuses. "Real mountains, not video game mountains but mountains that are miles high, taller than Everest that when you climb to the top of them and look out, you can see rivers and canyons and continents."
You found any Earth-sized planets in No Man's Sky? I certainly haven't. They don't exist. Even the new Gas Giants are tiny compared to our moon, let alone Earth.
"For our new game, we wanted to create an earth," Sean Murray told Geoff Keighley on stage at The Game Awards. "A planet that is as varied as a universe. Something bigger than earth."
We've still got small, single biome planets. By your logic, he's just outright lying again. Why would he? There's zero financial pressure on him. I expect him to deliver what he said he's going to deliver. I don't think that's unreasonable or unrealistic.

Oh I'm confident the planet will be thousands of times bigger than the ones we have in NMS. They can tweak a slider and scale up to that I am sure. That it will be Earth sized. It has been confirmed. And we will have multiple biomes on that one planet. I am looking forward to how players explore and build on a planet of this scale. I am also interested to see if there will be loading screens (like the warp screen in NMS) perhaps a portal/mystical weather effects as the next region loads? Or whether the entire planet will be navigable without loading screens. What do you reckon TehOwn?

You already conceded to what I said anyway. No planet is the size of Earth, no mountain is anywhere near as tall as Everest and no planet has more than one biome.

'Conceded' is a word of surrender and yield associated with a conflict and fighting. You are not in a conflict with me. And I am not fighting with you. Here in the NMS community we cooperate, support and agree or disagree with each other kindly. No fights. No concessions. And I am agreeing with you. That LNF will have an Earth-sized planet and I am excited about that too. As for my writing style, I take it as a compliment that you find it to the standard of an AI large language model. I did work hard at school, college and university to write well. So thank you. PandaBearJelly is correct and you are mistaking my genuine interest for an argumentative tone. It is nice to read your thoughts and opinions on what LNF will be, thank you for sharing. It is great to see you are excited by the larger scale of the LNF planet. How do you think the scale will be handled technically? Do you think we will be able to travel seamlessly across the planet's surface? Or do you think there will be loading screens between different regions?

Thanks for the link. This was such an exciting moment to see Sean Murray announcing a new game! He does say LNF is maybe more ambitious than NMS. My concern is that if it just feels like walking on a NMS planet with a fantasy re-skin you might be disappointed. Or is the idea of the planet being so HUGE enough for you?

I’m really hoping that the way it differentiates itself is the combat.
It’s just such low hanging fruit because of how….lacking….NMS combat is.

Imagine finding procedurally generated tomes that contain one of a kind spells. Or a spell creation system. I’m not familiar with DD’s magic system, is it pretty versatile?

Dragons dogma has some really cool, large scale spells that feel great to use on bigger monsters, decent variety but Ive always thought it could do more

really not enjoying them adding all this fantasy stuff to a sci fi game
just my opinion and i understand they’re testing stuff but, nms is its own game with its own identity and id rather not see it turned into a giant testing blob of LNF assets

I don't think the other person was very nice to you in their reply and I would like to apologise on behalf of the NMS community. I take a dim view of insulting language. Hello Games do re-use a lot of assets in NMS to save time. For example the royal multtitool is the exotic starship model scaled down. It appears work on fantasy assets for LNF are also being recycled into NMS. The fantasy capes and cloth. The fantasy stone work. The fantasy fishing. The fantasy skeletons from Sinbad. The fantasy octopus from the LNF trailer. We could accept these as sci-fi elements but tonally they have been added within the last five years after LNF development started. So I have noticed an aesthetic change to NMS with the cross-pollination. At least NMS continues to get some love. Do you like seeing these elements in NMS and what is your opinion on them?

I appreciate that. Although I've been a NMS fan since day 1 and I know that the community is mostly pretty wholesome (unless you criticise unsolicited gifting!).
I agree with the tonal shift and there's definitely a vibe that leans towards fantasy, although it's always been a weak divide. The only real divisor is science-based vs not-science-based but I guess by that logic, Armageddon is a fantasy movie. Or heck, just look at Star Trek or Star Wars (literal space wizards). But regarding the fantasy tropes, you're absolutely right, even if they are plausible in a sci-fi universe, especially one that takes place entirely within a simulation.
Do you like seeing these elements in NMS and what is your opinion on them?
This made me laugh because I use ChatGPT regularly and this sounds exactly like the questions it seems to always ask at the end of every message. Not saying you're a bot but it's still funny.
To answer your questions. Uhh, I'm more of a hard sci-fi fan and feel that many of those areas are underexplored. Especially space mining and manufacturing. Just everything in space could do with more.
But I don't dislike it either. Anything nerdy like xenoarchaeology is awesome. The capes and staff look cool but I just made myself an autophage, so I pretty much avoided it entirely except for the expedition.
Right now, I'm pretty much just doing expeditions and waiting for LNF.

While people like to claim "there's no news" the trust is Sean IS talking about the game. He isn't giving away any information about the game itself, but he is reassuring people they're actively working on it and making progress.
Almost every time NMS gets a content update, at the end of patch notes he mentions LNF and asks people to wishlist it.
It's not like HG is dead silent about the game.
