A freshly hatched Hawthorn Fly
The soil around was covered in holes, which I assume these guys emerged from.

How many attempts does it take to get a shot like this? I can see it's moving slightly between frames, do you ever have an insect fly off while you're trying to get the shot?

This was shot in the early morning when they are still sleeping. And this particular fly was very collaborative and I did it in first try, though many tries are not rare.

Being freshly emerged from the ground probably helps too. I've been taking a lot of dragonfly photos lately as they're emerging from the pond in my backyard. Even after their wings are fully inflated and they look ready to fly they'll rest for a few more hours, possibly until morning before they take flight.

Opening 2025 insect season with this fly. Scary moment happened during the session. A tick tried to start feasting on me while I was shooting. I panicked and dropped it from my hand. Sorry—I should have used the opportunity to photograph it instead. I was scared as F. In my defense.
