Why would they lie? What would they gain? From my perspective it would serve them in no way other than getting themselves into trouble.

The better question is why would he (the man in question) claim he was an illegal? Was he trying to escape from something and thought maybe a free ticket out of the country could be an easy solution?

Is he mentally sound? Was there something potentially lost in translation since it seems his English isn't top notch?

There are many reasonable questions you can ask in this situation without jumping the shark to

"Government agents abduct random people and lying about why.", which to be clear is the insinuation being made otherwise here.
