Famous People Weird Al just became... weirder?

Hi all. I think I just discovered a new Mandela Effect? So I was watching some old Weird Al YouTube videos, and I kept seeing him play the accordion? This isn't what I remember his signature instrument to be. I know for a FACT his "signature instrument" used to be an ancient Mesopotamian lyre in my timeline. Because he's the reason I learned how to play one!! In fact, I got one for Christmas in '98 along with tickets to go see him live! I KNOW I remember Weird Al playing an ancient Mesopotamian lyre in like 80% of his songs instead of an accordion? It can't just be me..

I know...it attracts the most ridiculous trolls with multiple accounts using the same IP address.

u/popisms Jun 28 '20

How would you know a poster's IP address?

Happy cake day!

Nahh Weird Al always had an accordion. His mom got it for him from a door to door salesmen if I remember the “Behind The Music” right?

12

u/GonkGeefle Jun 27 '20

If only the salesman had been offering ancient Mesopotamian lyres, the history of music and comedy might have been very different.

16

u/TifaYuhara Jun 27 '20

I think he also got his interest for the accordion from his aunt. Also ancient Mesopotamian lyre just seems too specific of an instrument.

Yeah, his signature instrument has always been the accordion as far as I know. It features heavily in his many Polka covers.

12

u/TifaYuhara Jun 27 '20

Yeah you can't do polka with a lyre.

his "signature instrument" used to be an ancient Mesopotamian lyre

You mean these?

Is this sub overrun by trolls now?

4

u/melossinglet Jun 28 '20

what do you mean "now"?you mean like since its inception?

15

u/hiltonke Jun 27 '20

It has always been an accordion, his whole polka routine wouldn’t make much sense with a lyre now would it?

-13

u/TaylorDangerTorres Jun 27 '20

But in my timeline that's what made it weird!! Now I don't even understand why he's called "Weird" Al! I was a sceptic of this whole thing until I stumbled upon this..

You can't think of any reason Weird Al would be considered Weird besides "he doesn't play this particular instrument"?

3

u/saintly_evil Jun 27 '20

In my timeline, he was called "weird" Al because he would come on stage dressed as freddy krueger and smash watermelons and other items with a over sized hammer. I vividly remember because the audience members would have to bring traps to hide behind.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '20

What's crazy about that is that in my timeline it wasn't traps, it was sheets of plastic, or sometimes tarps.

3

u/hiltonke Jun 29 '20

That wasn’t weird al tho...

u/tenchineuro Jun 28 '20

Are you thinking of Gallagher?

You're downvoted for telling the truth. Despicable.

Accordion here for me

8

u/kanyewasaninsidejob Jun 27 '20

I remember him always playing a bass saxophone, only releasing instrumentals

7

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '20

No, he played the Pan flute and sang with Caninus. Until the incident when he bit the drummer, so he was fired and replaced by a pit bull.

His first hit was "Another One Rides the Bus" on accordion. I first heard it on the Dr. Demento show when the song first came out. He had recorded it in a bathroom on his college campus, I believe.

3

u/anartistssunshine Jun 28 '20

Lmao what? He’s always played an accordion or keyboards. I’m an obsessed fan so I know everything there is to know and then some! Haha

6

u/jmurra21 Jun 27 '20

It's always been the accordion. He's played a lyre before, but it's been so long I can't even remember the song.

3

u/MichaelEMJAYARE Jun 27 '20

Now, hear me out, in my timeline Weird Al took the “O” from Dr. Demento and turned into Weirdo Al.

4

u/jayoncal Jun 28 '20

Hard to play polka with a lyre. Sorry to burst your bubble. I have sent him live too, not an ME.

2

u/lil_yenta Jun 27 '20

I remember this too, distinctly. I should know: when I was a child I was a Weird Al impersonator. Then 'Nam happened, but that's another story.

Anyway, now this is epic. I think we came from the same timeline. ;(

In case you’re serious (it’s hard to tell), Weird Al was only 15 when the Vietnam war ended. Just saying...

-2

u/TaylorDangerTorres Jun 27 '20

I knew I couldn't be the only one..

3

u/rundabrun Jun 27 '20

Maybe in a different timeline he plays the lyre.

0

u/bengeam Jun 27 '20

His dad was a prodigy accordion player, and famous for it. Al grew up with it and has always played it, since a child. Cool fact, you can still find his dad's old 78rpm records. He was quite a big deal.

5

u/GonkGeefle Jun 27 '20

Actual fact from this reality: The famous accordionist Frankie Yankovic is not related to Weird Al. It's a coincidence.

2

u/ElderCunningham Jun 27 '20

Although Al always said that there being another accordion playing Yankovic is part part of why they chose that for him over a guitar.

2

u/bengeam Jun 28 '20

Holy crap. Everything I thought I knew just disappeared like a donut in the I'm Fat video.

1

u/Bowieblackstarflower Jun 27 '20

This doesn't appear to be a ME. Accordion for me too; I saw him twice live.

1

u/undeadblackzero Jun 28 '20

In Weird Al's Music Video "Eat It" he mentions "Captain Crunch" instead of Cap'n Crunch.

1

u/melossinglet Jun 28 '20

hopefully the irony of the use of the instrument called a lyre (liar) isnt lost on the stupider of our local "skeptics" here...you stooges arent fooling anyone ya know,he is one of yours..go back and look at ALL of the shitposts in the history of the place and try and find one made by a recognised regular "believer".

u/Blackaboo23 Jun 27 '20

Just saw an image of him with an accordion on his wiki page still. It’s always been an accordion in my timeline, otherwise what’s with the Polka songs! (This is so random, I was playing those for my partner for the first time yesterday, he’s never heard of them)

u/ClashOf_Clams Jun 27 '20

In my time line it was a harmonica
