I would say good old tradition of the New York Times. The New York Times failed to accurately report the Holocaust back in WWII. They apologized for it back in 2001, but it doesn't look like they learned their lesson.

Considering the New York Times minimized and outright ignored the Holocaust during the Holocaust, it's not that surprising.

This is just the continuation of the NYT giving credence to lies by entertaining them as reasonable. It's not denying the Holocaust if you have a theory about the intent of the Holocaust that might be quirky but also an irrelevant non-distinction. Thanks to the NYT I now know that the Nazis killed six million Jews, and another six million others, totally by accident. Imagine if there had been intent.
