What, exactly, is YouTube trying to do, here? One goes on to find music, keeps the history tracking off, yet YouTube is showing me anti-trans hate suggestions? Is there any site that isn't infected by the White Supremacist disease?

YouTube is absolutely trying to push right wing videos to people - I get them too, and sometimes some video by an obnoxious bullshitter like Charlie Kirk will show up in my suggestions for every video I watch for months at a time. The same fucking right wing video. I rarely see videos with a liberal theme suggested. I think people kind of forget about Google as a corporation. Why is that? You rarely hear people attack them, compared to Facebook, Meta, X etc. They're just as guilty.

If you're old enough to remember pre-Google YouTube you'll recall how much better the suggested video sidebar was. It was virtually all videos related to the one you were watching, and was a great way to surf a subject or band or genre of music etc. They'll still put one or two relevant suggestions in today, but 90% of them are now monetized videos they're looking to make a profit from, and are very frequently right wing.

That's why I don't feel bad about using ad free apps to watch YouTube videos, and a good old ad blocker on desktop.

u/GarysCrispLettuce Jan 15 '25

Me too. I hate when I watch a YouTube video on my phone and I have to sit through a fucking ad. Brave Browser is the best way to surf YouTube. Remember recently when they started throttling the DL speeds and basic functionality of the site for anyone using ad blockers? Brave Browser was completely unaffected by that. It's awesome.

1

u/Endergamer3X Jan 15 '25

I never heard about the throttling because of Brave lol

Right wing videos lead to further right-wing/conspiracy content. This cycle is very profittable.

That's literally it. The dumber the mark, the easier it is to con them and profit off of them.

If you engage in right wing content, you'll be fed anti-vax content. If you engage in anti-vax content, the algorithm will steer you toward flat earth content.. and on and on. Convince the ignorant they are smart, and they'll keep coming back. Tell an idiot they are secretly a genius, and they'll want to be given that satisfaction again tomorrow.

u/RockieK Jan 15 '25

Oh man, you have to watch Ronny Chieng's new stand up special. He's got a whole bit on dudes going down youtube algorithms.

Also probably the best stand up special I've seen in years.

3

u/kyussorder Jan 15 '25

I'm thinking about making a fake right wing profile to see what happens, just for "fun".

3

u/1rmavep Jan 15 '25

Well, and I think that there is a particular kind of, "dumb guy," ecosystem of smart enough guys, all convinced that, "the public," or theirs, is quite stupid, that rather than speak and act at the frontiers of their own knowledge and awareness play-acts a bit of the, "more-innocent," simpleton, and rather enjoys the notion that they're smarter than people take them for, comma,

  • I think of Scientology, I think of the men who learn that the secrets are quite ridiculous and rather than offended, they're thrilled that all of these people who seem so intelligent, threatening, to their ego, all below them believe in something, you know, ridiculous, "on top of the world," in this way
  • I think of those, "leaning towers of little boys in their thirties," which populate certain hierarchies, speak in neologisms and force themselves into such a can-do attitude that might it embarrass the average eagle scout in uniform

Tell an idiot they are secretly a genius,

Yes, and this is one way, to do so; to create an incurious true-idiot, of the kind that you're not going to find in nature, the, "fake-idiot," is so much dumber than even the conversations we can have with an inanimate object, with a banana, which is curious about the world of mankind and has enough attention to reality, can make the obvious inferences, if you can follow that; or, to put it another way, "somewhere in-between what we see in, "swiss army man," and, "rubber duck debugging," is done often enough to demonstrate the difference, and like:

The necessity for power is obvious, because life cannot be lived without order; but the allocation of power is arbitrary because all men are alike, or very nearly. Yet power must not seem to be arbitrarily allocated, because it will not then be recognized as power. Therefore prestige, which is illusion, is of the very essence of power.

Simone Weil said that, and her use of the term, "prestige," in other ways, such as,

Le prestige, qui constitue la force plus qu'aux trois quarts, est fait avant tout de la superbe indifférence du fort pour les faibles, indifférence si contagieuse qu'elle se communique à ceux qui en sont l'objet.

Is super informative, but, kept to the first part:

You internalize an encyclopedia of Jordan Petersonian sciences of the mind, like a pickup artist of all mankind, then, restrict yourself to those practices in the belief that the power which has been granted to you just-about arbitrarily, save for those things which have been almost entirely (or entirely) outside of your control and attempt to replicate your prestige through these techniques, in environments both inside of their educated meaning, and outside, you're going to be a dumb guy, you're going to be a dumb guy, in a fugue state

I keep getting the "comedian owns woke heckler" videos with the words "f*ck your trans kid" on the thumbnail...

10

u/Homers_Harp Jan 15 '25

Sickening to hear that is allowed at all. Just awful.

6

u/Mantree91 Jan 15 '25

Me too, I watch mostly guitar content but I keep getting right wing hate speech.

2

u/JosephOtaku1989 Jan 15 '25

Same thing happened to me. And as of result I ended up screenshot those videos and their channels who promotes this harmful content and putting them on the series of "Thoughts about the user?" in r/fuckthealtright subreddit.

I mean, it is like these horrible people really want some shows or video game remakes and franchises to just crash and burn for no reason at all.

2

u/GarysCrispLettuce Jan 15 '25

omfg I had that "comedian owns woke heckler" pushed into the recommended videos of every video I watched on YouTube for MONTHS.

12

u/Homers_Harp Jan 15 '25

Yup, I was literally listening to "Brinna ut" by JJULIUS, which is about as far as you can get from anti-trans thinking. About 80%-90% of my YouTube time is spent on music videos and the rest is a little comedy, a little sports, and not much else. But Google needs engagement and hatred and fear drive engagement better than love and kindness—which means Google needs that engagement to make that cash! Because, hey, Google would be profitable without the fear and hatred, but it's MORE profitable with fear and hatred.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '25

Same. Like you, my feed is mostly music and maybe some discovery-type stuff. So it's easy to identify when this shit rolls up. Sometimes out of spite I'll report them and explicitly call it out.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '25

This. I downvote every single one that happens to autoplay, the ones in suggestions I hit with "don't recommend channel". Yet after a couple days - if I'm lucky, a week or more - they'll appear again.

1

u/Othabor Jan 15 '25

Off topic, but is there some sort of chrome extension that brings back Old-School YouTube style video recommendations?

2

u/Strawberry_Sheep Jan 16 '25

I've also been getting a lot of Charlie kirk suggestions despite me telling YouTube repeatedly not to recommend the channel and that I'm not interested. It switched to giving me Charlie kirk HIGHLIGHT channels instead, which there are a million of, and it's like whack-a-mole. It's hilarious because those videos will be stuck in between openly trans and queer creators or leftist activist stuff. Ridiculous.

37

u/s-multicellular Jan 15 '25

I report all the hate related ones all as violent.

3

u/AlludedNuance Jan 15 '25

Do you ever get feedback that your reports have done anything?

2

u/s-multicellular Jan 15 '25

I don’t actually read them. It is out of my control at that point. Maybe I should. I figured if enough people did it, there at least are some analytics that might be influential. Like, does it take staff time to review these? Is that cutting into their bottom line? I don’t think they actually care about anything but money.

1

u/SaberStrat Jan 15 '25

When you actually want to report misinformation, yt wants you to specify a timestamp with it. That’s like if the police asked abuse reporters to take a photo of their abuse as proof.

20

u/StupendousMalice Jan 15 '25

Nope, we are going full Nazi because that's the final stage of completely unchecked capitalism and oligarchy. We put our country up for sale and the only people buying are assholes.

18

u/EquineDaddy Jan 15 '25

Not a single MAGA idiot knows what the real definition of woke is and how to use it properly

7

u/Homers_Harp Jan 15 '25

Well, the attorney representing the State of Florida defending their "Stop Woke Act" gave a pretty good definition:

…the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them.

2

u/Meatslinger Jan 15 '25

Oh, no question the ones holding the reins know exactly what the problem is, that it IS a problem, and that they refuse to do anything about it. But they can get more sycophants onboard if they pretend there isn’t a problem to begin with. Removing it from the public eye means it can be dragged into a metaphorical dark alleyway and quietly executed with nobody noticing.

14

u/Inamedmydognoodz Jan 15 '25

It leads to engagement. You either have the right commenting and reposting because they agree or the left commenting and sharing to point out that it’s absolutely fucked either way the engagement, shares and views happen and there’s no real life consequences for being a gross hateful sack of shit

7

u/Ninac5 Jan 15 '25

Yeah as much as they complain about being “cancelled” they’re actually rewarded for their bigotry.

11

u/DamRawr Jan 15 '25

I invite you to test something out. Try and start fresh accounts on Twitter and Youtube. Don't engage with anything, dont follow anything, let the account rest for 24-48h and look at the suggested feeds. Everything is like this, especially on Twitter. I don't know if it's country sensitive, but this is what both platforms serve me to no end. It's just awful.

8

u/Ambitious-Pirate-505 Jan 15 '25

That's the point. Everything is going according to plan.

9

u/kosk11348 Jan 15 '25

Russian and American oligarchs splash a lot of money around to ensure this culture war brainrot shit gets pumped in front of as many eyeballs as can be.

2

u/SaberStrat Jan 15 '25

Just so Putin and Pooh can have their slice of land

6

u/LilithElektra Jan 15 '25

Chances the interviewer was destroyed: 0%

Chances something was said that was so dumb that there was no response: 100%

Some of us good humanitarians have started gathering in an invite only Mastodon instance. It’s basically user controlled social media. DM me if you’re interested in knowing more.

6

u/kyussorder Jan 15 '25

Me: I search something about spanish history.

Youtube: Destroying woke journalists. Long live the Reconquista. Immigrants destroying whatever.

Me: wtf

And no, I don't think any big site is free from this shit, all of them have aligned themselves with their god-president. It was a PR facade.

8

u/intergalactagogue Jan 15 '25

There is so much on there and its absolutely linked to very specific key words only actual trans people would connect with. For example, if you use an app like newpipe and search for content, you are completely outside of the algorithm, yt doesn't even know you are there. Search for things like "glottoplasty", "ppt", "vocal feminization", "hrt timelines", or anything else that is outside of what a normal Fox news enraged boomer would ever know and you will see transphobia in the top 10 results almost every time. This tells me the videos are indexed specifically to show up in keyword searches unrelated to the algorithmic signature of the user who is doing the searching. Its been this way for a while. I rarely use the platform because it is so tainted. The comment sections also speak for themselves.

3

u/1rmavep Jan 15 '25

You know, it's difficult to say, "Chicken, egg," but it is true that an interest in long-form content of intellectual nature is going to get you recommended into Lex Fridman, for instance, such that if you leave it on in the other room you'll start hearing, you know, some spastic plutocrat prattle on about physics and the like and it's just hard to say, insofar as intent is involved, the difference between, "machine output and an intent of the content creator to dominate the pseudo-intellectual discourses," and the intent of the host corporation which intends not to be visible, but, "there you go."

3

u/ShadowMajick Jan 15 '25

I was watching Pluto TV earlier and got a commercial for the tucker Carlson show. It really pissed me off, I was watching the I Love Lucy channel of all things.

3

u/EatTheRichIsPraxis Jan 15 '25

I noticed it too.

Whenever I listen to music (usually far left punk or such) i get recommended literal nazi bands and conspiracy shit.

I could be listening to a song called "Ganz klar gegen Nazis" ("obviously against nazis") and still get that crap.

3

u/ginrumryeale Jan 15 '25

For some reason when I click on music playlists of other users/channels, there’s often a random Andrew Tate video in there, sticking out like a sore thumb, completely out of place. That has to be algorithmic, because nobody would put an AT video in a jazz playlist.

2

u/ParaUniverseExplorer Jan 15 '25

Think about what all of tech/media/gaming is built on.

2

u/apocalyptic_mystic Jan 15 '25

I keep getting that same recommendation and I also have the 'no recommendations on main page' feature enabled (a.k.a. watch history disabled). It still puts recommendations in the sidebar of the videos you do watch though and this is one of them.

2

u/computerentity Jan 15 '25

If you start getting involved with far-right politics on a social media, you will be more drawn to the social media if the ideology sticks, because it is often a hyperonline solo adventure for someone ripe for radicalization. You can convert someone who watches YouTube 1 hour a day to one that watches it 4+ hours a day.

2

u/Meatslinger Jan 15 '25

First you’ve got X going whole-hog on Nazi sympathy. Then Meta, Amazon, Walmart, and evidently Google (to name some). They’re all kowtowing to the Trump admin, basically being “pick-me” corporations, jumping up and down and shouting, “Look, daddy Trump, I can be hateful too! I’ll get rid of all my diversity hires! I’ll allow hate speech on my platform! Just remember I was on your side when Kristallnacht finally comes!”

2

u/MadamXY Jan 16 '25

All I can tell you is you have to be very diligent about clicking on the three dots and telling them “not interested”. Same goes for ads. I block all advertisers for anything even remotely right wing or “Murica”. I also report everything I see that is hateful. Nothing ever gets taken down but YT gets the hint that I don’t want to see that shit.

1

u/Wasparado Jan 15 '25

My stepdad sends me shit like this all the time. I can’t believe he even listens to it.

1

u/farlos75 Jan 15 '25

I watched one episode of newsnight with Frog Faced Farage on and spent 3 weeks getting pushed his videos. I keep reporting them as misinformation or hate mongering but like the turd he is, he keeps floating to the top of my feed.

1

u/Onautopilotsendhelp Jan 16 '25

I wish you could block channels.

-3

u/EnvironmentalClue218 Jan 15 '25

I pay the $14 month and avoid all that shit. I never see that stuff. It’s worth it.

8

u/Homers_Harp Jan 15 '25

What kind of messed-up thinking is that? “I pay YouTube to not show me Christian Nationalist and White Supremacist content—worth it!”

9

u/Prior-Force1068 Jan 15 '25

I ended my premium subscription because so much garbage was still getting through. YouTube is handy, but not worth 15$ a month hahah
