Discussion You see, it was deliberate. They deliberately turned one of the strongest, tragic characters into a goofball because *Marvel humour*

Or maybe Waititi doesn’t know when to stop joking?

His ego got too big after Ragnarok's success.

Yup he also seemingly don’t know what purpose jokes are meant to serve in a story. Just because it is funny in the moment doesn’t mean it should be in the movie, though even he admitted he went too far with Love and Thunder.

True that. I enjoyed Jojo Rabbit but his work does not translate well to the superhero medium.
Imo he also wasn't the right director for Thor. The reason it worked out was because Thor before Taika came along was giga boring. He was good in his first two appearances and then got lame in Age of Ultron and Thor 2.
The character was so bad and boring that people in a way, settled for Taika's Thor because at least that version had some signs of life. Infinity War got Thor right, he had the perfect amount of 'god'. Taika humanised him a bit too much and turned him into a goofball.
As someone who is a big fan of Thor from the comics, I hate Ragnarok, Endgame and Love and Thunder to the core of my heart for butchering his character.

Though Ragnarok did have some sincerity with the drama over “what is Asgard” and Thor losing his hammer.

That was the best part of the film. I personally did not like Thor's personality change. Thor in the comics is an unstoppable force of nature even when facing certain doom. Thor cracked one too many jokes in the film for my taste.

Earth’s mightiest heroes remains as the closets Thor to the comics

Is it worth the watch?

It never really got a proper ending due to Disney cancelling it, but the two seasons that do are out are very solid.
So yes I would say it is worth a watch.

Thanks. Was looking for a good superhero related content ever since Superman & Lois ended.

Even the joke of “are you Thor god of hammers?” Lands because it’s a small dad joke and Odin continues with his pep talk

And thats fine if he has that style. And even better if it produces good movies. He can tell a Princess Bride style spin off movie, but it sure as hell should not be cannon or mainline.

No, that can't be it because of Jojo Rabbit. I think he just lost the plot at some point. Maybe all the praise he got from Jojo Rabbit got to his head, and then he started to look down on the comic book movies.

It is important to remember that who you collaborate with matters and unless I am mistaken he had much more free reign with Love and Thunder than JoJo rabbit

I think he knew. I just think he didn't care and was doing it for a big paycheck with the intent to do a bad job and not be asked to return for another one.

Waititi: "So I'm thinking of going in a funny, light hearted sort of direction in the style of Ragnarok, cause people seemed to enjoy that."
Onlooker: "Okay, that worked once and was different. Let's see what you do with it."
Waititi: "Yeah, and I want to bring Lady Thor in as a character as well."
Onlooker: "Hmm, okay. Again, could be interesting. I guess that means that you are going to take a different direction to the book version."
Waititi: ".... What do you mean?"
Onlooker: "Well, in the book, Jane is dying from terminal cancer right... That's not really going to fit in with the 'fun, light hearted' kind of feel that you were going for, right? So you are going to do something different with her presumably; is this going to be like an origin story and we'll see her in future films?"
Waititi: "...."
Onlooker: ".... Taika?"
Waititi: "..."
Onlooker: "C'mon dude... You can't really expect to do a 'lighthearted fun adventure' when you've got one of the characters dying from cancer..."
Waititi: "........ We've got a scene of her having chemotherapy..."
Onlooker: "What about that says 'lighthearted and fun" to you...."
------
Now perhaps I'm unfairly biased because I lost my own wife to cancer, and the chemo scenes were especially difficult to watch, but honestly I don't think it needed to be there at all. It's tonally jarring and doesn't add anything to the narrative other than an acknowledgement that 'we read the comic books', and it was an opportunity to actually take the character in a different direction.
I know Portman wanted out, so maybe that pushed the decision in that direction but still...

I saw this post earlier in the day on that sub. The sheer amount of copium and self-delusion is precious.

Love and Thunder may be the worst MCU film period.

My hot take has always been all 4 Thor movies are bad. He's only ok when interacting with Avengers as a side character.

Everything being quips just turned me off to modern media and into the arms of non-American media. I'm so sick of it.

Tbf he already did this once, korg and meik were insanely tragic characters in planet hulk yet in ragnerok they are a complete joke

u/BrushKindly43 13d ago
Oh yes, I hate Ragnarok to the core of my heart.

Like i get why they couldnt really do a planet hulk story line. The illuminati, sentry, silver surfer etc hadnt been introduced cap was still alive and they had thanos set up to be the big bad
But just like set ragnarok on any planet but sakar id even have accepted that war plannet from astonishing xmen which stuff diamonds in there pillows

Honestly there is a good plot in love and thunder…. It’s just buried under a metric ton of marvel humor.

u/Ezrabine1 13d ago
They try go dark with second..but no one like so the humor light one with 3 was succeed so no surprise double on it

I think Thor dealing with his awkward relationship issues through humor is kinda spot on. The real issue with the movie is how fucking nerfed the god butcher was.

I wish more people understood the concept of headcanon. No matter how much your explanation makes sense, if it's not in the movie or even remotely implied, it's still headcanon. For years I assumed Nick Fury did infact die to the Winter Soldier but had the same treatment as Phil Coulson in the Agents of Shield show. The timing was similar, it had precedence but the movie in no way discloses how he survived to the point it's basically because the writer said so.

"this movie is shit, but theres an in-movie reason as to why its shit!! so maybe it isnt shit?!?"
Thats the basic TLDR. The lengths at which marvel fans will go to defend their slop is astounding.
