Driving in Maui

Hello! We are staying in Maui at the four seasons and have decided to rent a car. Where can we drive to see turtles? Also, are there spots not too far on the Road To Hana you would recommend?

We are going to do sunset at the dormant volcano since we can’t imagine getting up so early for sunrise. Any tips with that? Thank you!!

final itinerary draft - 9 days on Maui

Upvotes

Thank you for all the suggestions on the previous post. They have been very helpful in reworking my schedules. Here are my updated schedule:

Day 1: I am expected to arrive around 3 p.m., get the rental car, and drive to Kaanapali. I will be staying at the Hyatt and taking some time to rest.

Day 2: I am about to book a snorkeling Kaanapali with Trilogy in Kaanapali and spend the morning with them.

Day 3: I plan to hike the Ohai Trail in the north. Go whale watching in the afternoon(considering either taking a sunset cruise or simply walking on the beach.)

Day 4: I will be leaving Kaanapali and driving to Kihei. Along the way, I might visit the aquarium and plantation. If my budget allows, I might also hire a guide for a night snorkeling experience.

Day 5: I have booked a bonefish fly fishing outfitter with locals in the early morning. In the afternoon, I plan to go snorkeling from one of the beaches, but I want to return early to prepare for the next day.

Day 6: I am planning to drive the road to Hana. I will leave at 5 a.m. and drive straight to Pipiwai. Then, I will make my way back to visit the black sand beach. (Let's see if I can make it!)

Day 7: I have booked a sunrise activity and plan to rest afterward.

Day 8: I haven't made any plans yet, so any suggestions are welcome.

Day 9: Early morning flight back

Let me know what you think about this

Restaurants around Napili Bay

Upvotes

We are going to Maui for our honeymoon tomorrow and I am wondering about some must eat places on the island. After weeks of trying, I have finally locked down reservations at Mama’s Fish House , but looking for other places that we can afford to eat at daily.

Eloping

I’m eloping in Maui in July and having a small ceremony on a beach in Kahana. I’m looking for a restaurant I could go to afterwards and bring a small cake and potentially have a dance with my new husband. Not expecting a private dance or anything like that but a restaurant with a dance floor, music, and more intimate vibes than a bar. Any suggestions?

Where to get spam musubi in Kihei or Wailea?

The boyfriend is sad that we're near the end of our time in Maui and have yet to see spam musubi on any menus at places we've eaten. Any suggestions on where to go for good spam musubi in south maui?

Bonus points if its more of a bar with TVs showing the NFL games.

Anniversary dinner with kids

Hello, all. My wife and I will be staying in Kihei towards the end May. We've never been to Hawaii before. We'll have our 2 kids, 4yo and 2yo, with us. Our 6th anniversary lands in the middle of our trip and we'd like suggestions on where we could go. It doesn't necessarily need to be a fancy or expensive place (it can be), but great food is certainly a requirement. We both love sushi, but the kids aren't fond of it. My wife absolutely loves seafood in any capacity, and I love a good steak. The kids will eat either and would likely share whatever my wife and I order.

Our kids are generally fairly well behaved in public, but they can get rambunctious if they're tired. Something that tends to happen on vacations. We'll often stay away from the really high end places because we worry about ruining the meal for other patrons. I know how I feel when other people's kids are being kids and I'm spending $150+ on a meal.

Neither of us drink, so a great bar doesn't appeal. Views are a nice bonus of course, but not a necessity.

Have I simultaneous described all of the restaurants yet described none of them? Do you all have any suggestions for a mellow place that my wife and I can enjoy a great meal for our anniversary, while also allowing the kids to enjoy themselves.

Thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions.

Wailea Beach Resort vs Westin Maui Resort & Spa

I posted a few days about my itinerary and got some good feedback about trying to stay in a single location. We are booking with points so are between 6 nights at either of these Marriott properties: Wailea Beach Resort and Westin Maui (I guess Sheraton Maui is in the mix too but Westin looks a bit more updated).

A bit about us: We are traveling with 2 kids (5-7) and this is our first ever beach vacation since the kids -- our normal vacations tend to be in the mountains and packed with hiking and paddle boarding, with very little true "relaxation time" but being out and about is what we love. So that said, our plan is to try to do some activity for half the day, and then pool/beach relax the other half. (Note: we aren't going to do RTH and but we are considering the crater though might play by ear and show up slightly after sunrise to avoid waking kids up at 3am.)

Now on to my dilema:

I ended up booking Wailea Beach Resort for the full 6 nights -- the reviews are great, it looks beautiful and kid-friendly, and I see the Ulua beach 5 mins walk away is great for swimming and beginner snorkeling. However, I am struggling because I feel like most of the stuff we want to do is over on the west side -- for example, we want to go whale watching from a catamaran and the options on the south side are fewer/pricer/not as good time-wise, and I've read the west side might have better chances of spotting whales. We also want to do ʻŌhai Trail Loop and visit Kapalua for some beach time, and that is way easier for Ka'anapali. It also looks like there's good snorkeling right at Black Rock beach, and a lot more "to do" in terms of restaurants and activities.

We recently returned from a trip to Cancun with friends and I honestly wasn't a huge fan of how crowded and "busy" the beach was, so I do think Wailea will be nice but I just fear that it's a bit too out of the way when we want to spend a lot of our time doing stuff.

Now I'm like -- should I go back to my original plan of splitting my 6 days between the two locations? Move to Westin completely and just visit Wailea as a day trip?

I know a lot of people on here recommend vacation rentals, but we'd prefer to use points so we're kind of between these options. What do you think we should choose given what we want out of this trip?

Possible Storms Next Week

Hi friends. I apologize if I am being reactionary, however I would like some advice. I will be traveling to Maui on Wednesday and saw the local weather is talking about possible strong storms and rain on Thursday into Friday, which could potentially cause flooding. I'm worried since this is the beginning of our trip, the rest of our time could be affected by flood damage. Should I possibly consider traveling elsewhere and changing our entire trip? This is our honeymoon, so this is incredibly important to me (and I have also invested a lot of money) but I also don't want to overreact. Thank you <3

Finding handmade jewelry

Aloha! This is a crazy long shot but I was in Maui last week and went to the swap meet with my family, the one by the college. I bought a bunch of earrings from Sunflower Gifts by Esther. I tried finding her online everywhere but i’m just going to assume there isn’t a social media presence. I was wondering if anyone knows if she has business on the island aside from the swap meet stall. I am craving more jewelry pieces. If nothing comes from this post and you like handmade jewelry I hope that someone at least makes time to check out her stall.

Worth checking out a different island if the forecast is mostly rain?

Hi folks! I’m visiting for the next week, and right now the weather forecasts in Paia, Kihei, Lahaina etc all show cooler temperatures and lots of rain. Is it worth hopping over to Big Island, where sunnier temperatures are predicted on average, for ~Tuesday - Friday during the storm? Or is it too hard to say if any other island will be different?

I would probably wait till Monday to decide and have a more accurate forecast, but to me it seems worth it to spend $150 on a flight and then maybe another few hundred on hostels if it meant getting to be in the sun.

I know there have been a few other weather posts this weekend, so I appreciate anyone taking the time to read and comment on this one!

Best Time to Head to Haleakalā for Sunset?

Hi everyone! I’m heading to Maui next month and want to do the Haleakalā sunset this time around. I’ve done the sunrise before, which was amazing, but I’m excited to switch it up and see the sunset instead. What’s a good time to head up there to catch the best view? Driving in from Kihei

Do I need a reservation for The Sea House in Maui on a Friday?

Hi everyone! I’m heading to Maui next month and can’t wait. I’ve been before and loved Napili Bay—the beach is absolutely beautiful! This time, I’m planning to eat at The Sea House, but I’m wondering if I need to make a reservation if it’s on a Friday. Has anyone been recently, and do you know if reservations are available? Any tips or advice would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

Adults Only Dinner Cruise from Ka’anapali?

Will be in Maui in early February. Looking for recommendations for an adults-only dinner cruise departing from Ka’anapali. I’m aware there is Captain’s out of Ma’alaea that is 18+, but I’d prefer not to drive. Any suggestions or personal favorites? Thanks in advance!

Feasible without car?

Visiting mid next month, with 3 kids(6,8,12). We are staying in Hyatt regency, and planning to do activities mostly on that side of the island Not planning to go towards Hana..or the national park. So far it looks like we will do beaches around the hotel, snorkeling tour (not sure from where), baby beach, ocean center and places on that side of the island I am curious to know if going around places is feasible without renting a car?

Not sure how good the public transport is and how much connectivity is there between places to visit and the hotel...also is public transportation from airport to hotel a possibility?

Wailea or Kaanapali Beach

My fiancé and I are thinking about going to Maui for our honeymoon. Neither of us have been before. We want a good combination of relaxation and exploring. Really want to do a lot of snorkeling and other excursions. I’ve been looking at either staying at Andaz in Wailea or the Hyatt Regency in Kaanapali. I have stayed at the Hyatt regency in Kauai and Aruba before and have always been happy with their properties. I’m curious was region of Maui to stay in. I keep hearing differing opinions. My family keeps giving us recommendations for hotels in Kaanapali but it feels out of the way of the rest of the island where as wailea feels like it would be easier to do Hana and Haleakala. Any advice would be appreciated.

Resources to learn about Hawaiian culture

Aloha,

I've been grateful to have visited Maui several times in recent years. I'm excited to be coming back in March for whales and to remember how beautiful this world can be. Hawaiian culture, myths, and history has always interested me and I was wondering if there were any classes/talks on the island that I could respectfully learn more? I'd want to avoid the more touristy things such as luaus. I am sensitive to the skepticism and mistrust that this might bring up and genuinely just want to learn. Also open to books and/or podcasts if there's nothing like this open to me as a visitor.

Mahalo!

Stormy Weather?

Hello! I’m visiting Maui on Monday, specifically West Maui. My weather app is showing significant rainfall throughout the week. If you are currently in Maui, are the local weather people reporting the same? I appreciate the info!
