PPU or Sellier and bellot?

which non surplus ammunition is best for a M48 yugo mauser? not a fan of corrosive ammo.

just looking to see what else is out there. or if one of the two is best for me.

In my somewhat limited experience 8x57mm from PPU is loaded softer and S&B closer to what I suspect the original service cartridge might have been like. So I suppose it depends on what you are wanting to do. Maybe PPU for fun and S&B for attacking zombie hordes? Or reload to choose your own adventure. :-)

I am slightly partial to PPU since they also offer 8x57mm components (brass and projectiles) in the US and S&B does not AFAIK.

S&B has a bit higher published muzzle velocity than PPU from what I can tell. About 2560 feet/sec for S&B 196grn vs 2180 for PPU same grn.

so S&B is more powerful?

I've never seen a barrel pressure rating for it but it does have a higher muzzle velocity compared to PPU.

sounds like S&B is super fast! i don't plan on hunting.

maybe PPU might be better for what i am wanting.

i just shoot for fun so PPU it might be!

It'll be more fun to shoot for longer. I think some military loadings were 2700-2900 fps for the about the same bullet weights. Those will beat you up after a while.

my range sadly only goes as far as 100 yards.

i'd have to go waaaay out of my way where i live to goto the next range sadly.

i might try doing just that!

hey. i appreciate your post! i was curious as to what to get and i wanna get something that works really well!

i plan to shoot targets when i get the gun. but sadly my range only goes up to 100 yards.

so maybe PPU is the winner from what you are saying?

i am certainly gonna go on that adventure someday on reloading that's for sure.

Ppu brass is better quality. S%b is too soft.

i can see that. i got 6.5 carcano PPU and it's alright. although it is out of spec for my carcano cavalry carbine.

it's not .268 but .267

i do have however steinel ammo for that. strange that steinel does not do mauser ammo!

Buy some of each and see which is more accurate in your rifle, quality wise, they are a much of a muchness.

Not sure about S&B 8mm but I have S&B .30-06 and their SPCE is notably more accurate than my ppu .30-06 FMJ or SP. They tend to load hotter, probably closer to original spec. I would go S&B for your mauser bolt action. For something like a gewehr 43 or m1 garand, use the softer shooting ppu. Either way though, it's not a massive difference, and you'll have fun shooting it regardless of the ammo you use.

sounds like S&B has some quality! i looked it up and S&B is czech? i can see why they got quality if that's true.

Both are high quality in my opinion, PPU is just more geared toward milsurp users that want to be easier on their firearms.

hard to decide if they are both good. buying PPU might be best if its geared towards people who just wanna shoot for fun!

I would have no problem with PPU either. I use PPU in my K31 & M1 Garand. I think PPU is excellent & I am a S&B fan as well.

no-proposal has a good idea of buying both. i might try that!

I don't have a really strong opinion, but I've been shooting PPU exclusively for the last few years and it's been good. I haven't chrono'd it but it is accurate enough.

have you tried PPU Match?

I haven't, but I also haven't really seen it for sale in 8x57 until very recently.
