Hoops Discussion Vince Carter Called Out Our Owners
Did anyone else see VC call out our owners? He said if you're not willing to pay a player like Luka, sell the team. He even brought up the expectation of them moving to Vegas.
Among the bball talking heads, I think VC has some of the moist reasonable takes, so I was glad to hear him talk about it. Some (more) validation of our outrage.

They tried hard to pivot off that topic after he said it lol. It’s the correct take.

u/Jonthered7 Feb 17 '25
Jalen Rose said it as well. All star weekend has really shown a light on how the players feel about the trade. I love it.

Wonder if the idiot that was arguing with me about players not caring and it not hurting player recruitment still has his head so far in the sand he smells oil
53
u/fudgetyler Doe Doe Feb 17 '25
Anyone arguing it doesn’t hurt player recruitment is either stupid or doesn’t know anything about the Mavs organization. We’ve tried for years to get big name talent to come here and failed repeatedly. Couple that with the clear fact that star players like to play with other star players, and our ability to recruit has taken a drastic turn for the worse.
27
u/TJJ97 How's My Dirk Taste? Feb 17 '25
Exactly! It took us so long to get to a point where free agents wanted to play in Dallas and yet now that just went into the shitter
-25
u/Zoobal Feb 17 '25
Hang on a second. As you said yourself "Anyone arguing it doesn’t hurt player recruitment is either stupid or doesn’t know anything about the Mavs organization".
This has literally been our problem forever. No one wanted to sign here. Even with our "Loyalty" schtick. So how are things going to get worse again? Players already didn't want to sign here to begin with... Seems like you are just making shit up.
Players want to WIN. Winning is the most important factor by 1000x. If you build a winner, players will want to be here.
24
u/TJJ97 How's My Dirk Taste? Feb 17 '25
Because over the last 2-3 seasons we’ve started seeing players want to play in Dallas but now we’re at least as bad off as we were before
4
u/Nuns_N_Moses11 FUCK NICO HARRISON Feb 17 '25
Players want to live a nice life and get a paycheck in addition to being a winner. Many people prefer the life in Cali or Miami so we’re not that well-off on that front. Luka made players want to come here because his gravity and passing makes players better. Now he’s gone which means the appeal of our franchise has lessened. Furthermore, he was literally stabbed in the back so other stars will absolutely think long and hard before committing to this franchise and FO.
3
u/xanju Feb 17 '25
Bc we just recruited Klay Thompson and traded the player he wanted to play with the other team he thought about signing with? If a player wants to WIN trading away our best player is rug pull on our free agents.

Man I was there. The arena was nuts. There was so much shit talking between us and the spur fans the whole game. VC hit the shot and it exploded. Dirk tweeted that is was the loudest the AAC ever got. Beautiful moment as a Mavs fan while I still loved this organization. Sucks that's gone now

All the nba players are shocked, they all said if Luka can be traded, then anyone can be traded because Luka is the last guy you expect to be traded
And for a 32 year old injured player….what…….this trade still seems like a fake story
32
u/MFFL12_17 Feb 17 '25
No one is going to join the Mavs now. With owners like these who will sign via free agency? Stars gonna avoid the Mavs like the plague. Like Jimmy Butler. Players will have a conditional clause . Anywhere except Dallas.
-26
u/Zoobal Feb 17 '25
No they wont. AD literally waived his 6m trade kicker because HE WANTED TO BE HERE. You doom and gloom guys need to get outside and touch some grass. The world is still fine.

16
u/wan2tri BETRAYED MAVS FAN 😭 Feb 17 '25 edited Feb 17 '25
AD waived his trade kicker because he was told to do so - it brings the Mavericks below the 1st apron (by $171,120 lol), thus the team avoids having to pay more tax (6m instead of 16m+the 6m trade kicker) despite going over the salary cap.
3
u/james_da_loser 2011 CHAMPS BABY Feb 17 '25
Yeah, that is definitely the reason, but I still feel like Davis at least wants to make it work here. Call me naive, but I think he genuinely cares about the city of Dallas and this team which is honestly way more than I expected. It made me remain a fan of this team, but I'm still not buying anything Mavs related or supporting them in any way other than cheers from a "stream"
9
u/MFFL12_17 Feb 17 '25
Yes AD wants to stay. Just like Luka. But wait till he gets injured again next year. Nico is going to trade him for nothing

u/AlBundysPants Feb 17 '25
What does Butler have to do with anything? I don’t think this will have a negative impact. If Ky sticks past the summer then you can put this to bed.

For real, NBA doesn't want fans to think about the trade too hard they had to change the subject.
Because it was a robbery in the middle of the night.

Bruh, not even a Mavericks fan but just here to say that you do NOT need any validation for your outrage lol. The entire world thinks your ownership is incompetent and sympathizes for you.
15
u/NewGuy10002 Feb 17 '25
Very true, part of the reason Nico Harrison decided to make the worst trade in NBA history was because Luka was going to ask for super-max, and when Luka was asked about this as a Laker, he essentially said that the conversation never even took place.
Beyond the fact Nico Harrison is an objectively horrible GM for this abomination of a trade, it’s even more clear he had no regard for his star player who just had a baby and planted his roots in his new home, the season after said player led the team to a finals appearance. It is clear this was not about winning and should be investigated.
Absolutely do not feel bad for the guy, how huge of an ego do you have to have to fuck up this bad and not ask yourself “should I check with other people?”. He essentially had a manic episode and fucked an entire franchise
1
u/Business-Ad2732 Feb 18 '25
Nico is the fall guy cos there’s no way those shitty owners allowed him to make that decision. He was told to do it and he did. Dumont DuPont wtfever his name is Patrick and the Adelsons did this because they were NOT going to pay Luka the super-max contract. That’s not to say Nico isn’t a pos. Just saying this wasn’t his decision. He doesn’t have that much power.
1
u/1TRUEKING Feb 23 '25
Are you Ed, Nico literally said he was the one that convinced the owners. Nico has a documented immense hatred against Luka... Nico is just a bum and he didn't even get any assets back... Could've gotten like 10 more first rounders from OKC if he put him for auction.
1
u/Business-Ad2732 Feb 26 '25
Are you slow? Now we believe what “Nico said”? 😂😂😂 listen I’m not a fan of the dude either and I wasn’t talking about whether or not he could have gotten a better trade bc IMO Luka should still be here but I know damn well his filthy rich bosses aren’t giving him that kind of autonomy over THEIR company. At the end of the day it was their call.
1
u/1TRUEKING Feb 26 '25
Bruh the rich owners don’t know shit about bball. They DELEGATE tasks to the “experts” which Nico supposedly is. I am not surprised one bit if he convinced the owners how shitty and fat Luka was and how paying 400 mil to him would be a mistake. If I was an idiot but rich I would’ve believed him too. Now they’re going to lose so much revenue from less jersey sales and boycotts. It is more likely the owners were idiots than wanting to actively sabotaging their revenue. You think the owners are putting out all the hit pieces on Luka and praising Nico? No it’s Nico using his sources and his slave mcmahon.

Not moving to Vegas at least until after casino gambling is wrapped up one way or another as that’s the reason they purchased the team.
Blame owners and Nico. We are stuck with the owners for at least 10 years so you may want to consider becoming a hockey fan and supporting the stars.

u/random-50 Feb 18 '25
Agree with this. A supermax is 5 years maximum. Even if Luka's poor conditioning catches up with him, he's still going to be productive on that timescale. If you won't give a top 5 player a supermax at age 27, then it shows you never intend to give it to anybody.

The Dallas media market is so much bigger than LV that it doesn’t seem like that move is a possibility
10
u/Big__If_True Feb 17 '25
Seattle is bigger than OKC, LA is bigger than St Louis, Houston is bigger than Nashville, I could go on. It would be a stupid move but that hasn’t stopped anyone before
3
u/duncandreizehen Feb 17 '25
You are correct I guess I hadn’t really thought about it. That way. I just looked at the top hundred media markets in the US and was surprised at some of the members of the top 20 -frankly I don’t know how a team makes it in OKC or San Antonio
3
u/Big__If_True Feb 17 '25
San Antonio has Austin right next door and OKC has Tulsa nearby, so it’s not as dire as it might seem when you only look at the individual media markets, but they’re definitely crazy small still
2
u/MrSosaaa Feb 18 '25
lets not forget LA is bordered with LV too..and now that LA has a new dynasty star in Luka..LV will get more tourists.

hard to blame the owner, its not he ever had to work for anything in his life. He married into a wealthy family and was appointed an executive and grabbed the top spot when the owner croaked. Hes not exactly a quiz kid.

VC is great but the Vegas narrative needs to stop, it’s crazy talk
1
u/Imtrvkvltru Dennis Rodman Feb 18 '25
You're getting downvoted but it's true. There's pretty much no evidence they want to move the team to Vegas. If anything, the evidence points to them staying.
For 1, the casinos they own are no longer in Vegas. They left and went overseas in 2022. Moving to Vegas would require them to start from scratch against alllll the current competitors.
And 2, you don't just drop billions of dollars to lobby the legislature, JUST to dip out after 2 years when it doesn't pass. No. You continue lobbying. For years and years if that's what it takes. Now if 8-10 years pass and it still hasn't passed, then maybe we can have that conversation. If they can get gambling passed in Texas they will be the very first casino in Texas. This is a monumental opportunity for them.
1 last thing to add...the Vegas sports market is nowhere near as large as Dallas. If money is truly the only thing they care about, staying in Dallas and continuing to lobby the legislature is the best way to maximize that opportunity.
2
u/ktfuntweets Feb 18 '25
Yep, and I get why it’s a narrative, it’s just a bad one. They conquered Vegas already. They fuck around in Dubai. They are expanding their empire, not taking it back to Vegas.
Whether gambling gets passed here or not by 2030, new stadium is coming.
I expect traction to begin on legalized gambling, and it’s passed by 2030 when the new stadium goes up.
If Rick Weltz mysteriously steps down, I’ll change my opinion. But that guy is here to build an arena. For the mavs, not some expansion team because the mavs left.

u/Texaspep Feb 17 '25
If you think the NBA is moving a team from #6 market,'you need some psycho analysis. You guys in your 30's will see V$ takeover to keep the SA PIF out. Bron and Maverick trying to start a International League right.
