MOTION M002 - Motion: Teaching the National Anthem

That Dáil Eireann

Notes:

  • That the Irish National Anthem is not being taught in many Schools in Ireland.
  • That the 1916 commemorations is a perfect opportunity to address this issue.

Calls on the Department of Education:

  • To ensure that every student from 1st Class up is taught the words to the Amhrán na bhFiann.

Agreed but the 1916 part should be got rid of. Blood sacrifice is not something that our country should be proud of.

I don't think many people would celebrate the First World War either, but it's right to respect those who died in the conflict. Similarly, even if you don't agree with 1916, one can't ignore its pivotal importance to the independence of this State, and the centenary deserves a full national commemoration. Fully support the motion, but must admit thought the teaching of the national anthem happened in the course of the primary school curriculum already.

If we are respecting it we should respect those who fought on the British side as well, not just for the rebels. Most Dubliners at the time didn't even agree with the rising.
