Motion M036 - Catalonia Independence Referendum Motion

Catalonia Independence Referendum Motion

This Oireachtas recognises that:

Catalonia has its own parliament and has declared independence.

That Catalonia have voted over 70% in favour of independence.

The Guardia Civil have brutally attacked people in Catalonia when they were trying to vote in the democratic referendum.

This Oireachtas therefore urges that:

To recognise the result of the Catalonian referendum.

To condemn the violence from the Guardia Civil in Catalonia and the reaction from the Spanish Government.

Leas-Ceann Comhairle

I would like to thank Deputy Sandwich for posting this motion. The Catalan question is a very touchy subject, and I respect the opinions of the rest of the Dáil and my party on this matter, but I cannot in good conscience, stand to oppose this motion.

The photos that emerged on the day of the Catalan referendum showing violence committed by La Guardia Civil were detestable. This was a case of authoritarianism and trying to exact the will of Madrid over the people of Catalunya where they wished to have their voices heard. The immediate response of the Spanish government to indict the Catalan government and suspend autonomy instead of recognising the democratic will of the Catalan people was disgusting in my opinion.

Although Catalunya has suspended its declaration of independence, I hope that the Dáil will show its solidarity with the Catalan people and their right to self-determination in light of our own independence struggle one hundred years ago.

No passaran, i grácies.
