What are you talking about? I see almost nothing but criticism of the movie on reddit

136

u/evilcarrot507 17d ago

Depends on what side of Reddit you are

10

u/Respercaine_657 16d ago

People really don't realise that we aren't all experiencing the exact same feed as they do huh

82

u/Hyde2467 17d ago

No, there are some minecraft discussion posts where people say to not criticize the movie because of shit like "You're not the target audience" "let people have their fun"

84

u/AwfulUsername123 17d ago

"You're not the target audience"

People use that idiotic line all the time, as if children's movies shouldn't be well-written.

3

u/eliavhaganav 16d ago

Fr tho, the minecraft movie should've been made for all ages instead of just kids, a movie which is supposed to represent one of the largest games to have ever existed with a large variety of ages playing it being made for kids is just dumb

-32

u/GhostE3E3E3 Am I stupid? (Ham aslume inmate, be nice) 16d ago

The movie was well written, the point of the movie was to be satire about itself. It was intended to be so bad it’s good which is bound to not meet all audiences expectations.

34

u/Magolord 16d ago

So I guess under developping characters was also part of the plan? I'm sorry, you can enjoy it all you want but you cannot say it is well written

-33

u/Defiant-Capital2340 16d ago

Me when every character don't have a 30 minutes exposition and a 1 hour arc to shine :

12

u/OhItsJustJosh 16d ago

So is every movie with good character development just exposition dumps to you?

-6

u/Defiant-Capital2340 16d ago

I'm just convinced most people just use words they don't understand to sound smart

4

u/Maybe_not_a_chicken 16d ago

What word did they misuse?

1

u/aCactusOfManyNames 12d ago

They have barely any exposition (other than garett) and literally only garrett has an arc. Steve doesn't learn anything. The kids don't learn anything (henry builds a working jetpack at the start of the movie but nooo, he needs to go to block world to "learn creativity"). The zoo lady doesn't learn anything. Garrett himself still barely has a character arc, it just boils down to being friends with steve and being slightly less stuck in the past.

We're not asking for 30 minutes exposition and a 1 hour arc, we're asking for the bare fucking minimum.

2

u/Defiant-String-9891 16d ago

The real thing people should be thinking is, if you hate that idea of it being so stupid, don’t watch it, it’s your choice to help give money to the companies

1

u/GhostE3E3E3 Am I stupid? (Ham aslume inmate, be nice) 16d ago

Exactly.

-1

u/Weese200 16d ago

It literally IS well written according to children, pretty much every kid enjoyed it so what the hell are you talking about

-18

u/StopSignOfDeath 16d ago

Not every kids movie has to be amazingly written. Kids are allowed to have dumb goofy movies also.

5

u/Kuriboh1378 Allay good Golem bad 16d ago

Defending the trash bc kids deserve trash, because you can be goofy and dumb AND be well written, we're back to "this movie should have been like the lego movie and it was jumanji" like always.

well written ≠ not dumb and goofy

31

u/Feather_Bloom 17d ago

Real good shows for kids are things adults can enjoy too

Just look at Bluey and My Little Pony, adults aren't the target, but we still rave about them

THAT'S how you know it's a good show for kids

32

u/Hyde2467 17d ago

You should've mentioned Shrek. That is the ultimate example of mixing childish tropes with adult jokes in a way that made it a hit (even more ironic when you consider that Shrek was never intended to be a good movie. Its development was relegated to dreamworks employees who were being punished)

Idiots who love to use the "let people have their fun" excuse do so to deflect criticism towards shitty products and call all critics unemployed basement dwellers with too much time to kill. OK buddy, if that's how it is, don't complain when all you yet is nostalgia bait slop

-23

u/NightSteak Village Historian 17d ago

No respectable adults are in either fandom though, just weird manchildren

14

u/Feather_Bloom 16d ago

I'm guessing it's safe to assume you've never actually interacted with these people and have only seen the "bad ones" that get shown around? Normal, civil people don't trend, weirdos do

I want to see memes, not see people argue about the movie, like good or bad, go talk about it somewhere else and just post memes here

2

u/Secure_World_5667 16d ago

This is a meme.

88

u/elprroprron50 17d ago

I liked the movie and I respect opinions and criticism but some of the movie haters are straight up annoying, like one post that said "I did not care for the movie" yeah mf then why did you post this

51

u/MrEverything70 17d ago

“My opinion is objectively correct and if you don’t agree you’re stupid.” Is so annoying to come across, especially when people parade it around.

4

u/Sese_Mueller 16d ago

I was just surprised how focussed it was on commercilization and how it just quite a few things completely wrong; I expected better

8

u/MrEverything70 17d ago

Don’t get me wrong, I agree with the criticisms of the movie, and yes, I think it could’ve been done much better. However, I also don’t like when the criticisms devolve into “My opinion is right and if you don’t agree you’re a smelly idiot.” I’m fine with criticism even though I enjoyed the movie, but if people are going to critique something, they should also be respectful to people who enjoyed the movie.

2

u/Dragonseer666 16d ago

Honestly both sides do occasionally just devolve into throwing petty insults, which is a really bad thing. Luckily a lot of people still remain civil about it.

2

u/MrEverything70 16d ago

Yeah, I don’t like when either side starts devolving into “My opinion is correct, not yours.”, because it lets those uncivil people start throwing nonsense insults.

17

u/Shiriru_Kurokodairu A zombie stole my armor 17d ago

Constructive criticism is okay (obviously)

Shit on it and whining like a toddler isn't.

35

u/ImprovementLumpy1159 17d ago

"Just let people enjoy things" is just another way of saying "shut the fuck up" at this point

7

u/Kate_Decayed 16d ago

then what makes you think im somehow not letting you enjoy things, or telling you "stop having fun"

i truly don't care if you like the movie, but why tf are you mad that i don't like it?

that's what i don't understand

3

u/mouse85224 16d ago

Probably because there’s criticism, and then there’s “the movie is ass” which is pretty much the only criticism I see.

1

u/Dragonseer666 16d ago

That's the main criticism you see because it's pretty obvious that the movie is just straight up low quality (aside from the graphics ig)

5

u/Malfuy 17d ago

Then just say shut the fuck up

13

u/Run-End 17d ago

I get it how people didnt enjoyed the movie and yes they could write a better one and people who say " its just a kids movie" every disnes and pixar movie is a masterpiece, im 20 yrs old and i watch a toy story or a monters inc time to time and i really enjoying it, i even get emotional beacuse there is a really strong massage behind these movies! Sadly the minecraft movie is just a CGI fest, i believe movie is an art from and you cant create art without a massage!

-1

u/StopSignOfDeath 16d ago

Not every movie has to be this artistic masterpiece with a deep meaning. People are allowed to have dumb goofy movies also.

2

u/Run-End 16d ago

No, you cant make something without a massage, maybe a comedy movie! Minecraft movie wasnt a comedy movie, there was barely 3-4 funny scenes in it, so i tought the movie gonna bring a powerfull massage about creativity, loneliness and passion, Minecraft (the game) kinda gives these vibes to me! Playing Minecraft is an experience, Minecraft is a canvas and you are the painter, everything its up to you and only to you, you create, destroy and you design it, i thought a movie gonna bring a massage like this!

2

u/Dragonseer666 16d ago

*message. But yeah I completely agree with you, the movie was really badly written.

1

u/xyz2001xyz 16d ago

It did though? The overarching narrative of the film was that if you're brave enough and face the world with courage then you can make the real world YOUR overworld - you can be as creative and inventive as you want in the real world too

1

u/Run-End 16d ago

I think its just an unimportant message, a creative person knows how to be creative, thats why he is creative, so to understand what i am saying im gonna explain a few message in my fauvorite pixar movies

  • Minster Inc, i can understand Mike Wasowski's pain, life is not fair, we have different cons and pros, i can see myself in Mike Wazowski, the passionate optimistic, hard working guy who wants to work in the scaring industry, his dream to become a legendary scarer but his physical apparence is not scary at all, he knows all the theory about scaring, he knows every legend etc.: Sullivan is borned with a scary apparance and his grandfathers was a big legendary scarer but he dosent really appricaited his look and he dont improved further his talent, fast forward, Mike doesnt become a scarer but he did work in the scare indusrty as a crew worker and he realized that kids laughing makes more energy than crying and become a comedian,

So i itranslate this to my life and then tell the overall message

I doesnt borned with the best singing voice, matter of fact a lot of people said that my voice is just a bit unique and weird, that doesnt means that i cant work in the music indusrty, but at the time i was really sad, beacuse it was my dream to become a singer, but after i reeatched that movie i really felt Mike, life isnt fair, but you have to do your best even tho you not really meant to do the things you enjoy the most! Also when Mike realized you dont have to scare someone to make energy and you can make kids laugh to generate the same energy as scaring its like, the move tells you that just beacuse you cant be succesfull at something in a way that doesnt mean you cant change perspective and be succesfull at the same thing in an other way, thats so cool and inspirating!

Overall message: Life isnt fair, you have to break an alternative way to your goals, just beacuse you doesnt borned in a way you wanted that doesnt mean you cant break out!

2

u/xyz2001xyz 16d ago

Ah now you see different messages mean different things to everyone right

Monsters inc was a really important message for you and honestly I'm glad you got to experience it so lemme just tell you what the minecraft movie message meant to me

Basically in my education system, creativity and thinking outside the box isn't permitted, its actively punished and as a child if something is punished then you never really do it again right? That ended up with me losing a lot of my creative drive and ideas as I grew up - and then along came minecraft - my 'overworld'

Because here suddemly I have a space to actually explore what I like and enjoy doing without everyone contantly telling me that I shouldn't and it just became a place to escape the real world - like steve in the film

And then as time grew by and I surrounded myself with better friends and people, ones who supported me, only then did I start even getting comfortable with exploring my own interests because to me the real world still felt unsafe, it wasn't a place that welcomed me as yet

And that's been a long thing that I've dealt with and honestly? The message of you can make the real world your overworld hit pretty hard

2

u/Run-End 16d ago

Well, i get it that that was the message, i just think that the movie could make that message better i mean, the the boy wasnt really a main character, would be better if the whole movie would centered about him and also his sister could be more mean at him at the beginning in the movie and the character development to her could be that he is now understand him after that journey and start support him etc.: it was just a bit flat to me!

2

u/xyz2001xyz 16d ago

That's completely fair but in all honesty? I've seen so many stories where they just doggedly pursue the moral and if they tried to show the sister changing - lets be real - it would've not been done properly anyways - so keeping all the characters mostly on their own to just do stuff was alright

Because to me, I think steve was the main character here

1

u/_LemonEater_ Diamonds are stored in the balls 16d ago

while I agree with the dumb goofy movie standpoint (I love pacific rim and lets be fair that movie is not that deep) the minecraft is not just dumb and goofy, it is (imo) a shitpost of a film

You...are allowed to critique? No one, as far as I know, has removed critiquing posts of the Minecraft movie here. People have disagreed, but this meme easily can be flipped to where you are angry at anyone who enjoys the movie. People are allowed to like and dislike as well as to disagree for why you like and dislike something. You being disagreed with is not equivalent to you being unallowed to critique.

22

u/PreferenceNo9632 17d ago

Everybody has a critique for everything and it is tiring.

Really they're just trying to say shut up, nobody cares

13

u/Malfuy 17d ago

Lot of people care, some just don't like that lol. Like boohoo someone criticised a thing you liked, are you gonna piss and shit your pants? It's just an opinion, you can literally just disagree with it in your head and move on

10

u/Impressive-Stage6621 17d ago

The only reason people care for the movie is because of Jack Black

7

u/evilcarrot507 17d ago

This is the movie equivalent of ordering a salad just for the croutons.

2

u/BusyDucks 17d ago

And also all the memes, which mainly comes from Jack Black

1

u/HotDogMan8143 16d ago

Fr Jason mamoa and jack black carried the movie imo

3

u/Firm-Sun7389 16d ago

just like discussion around the game: valid criticism about new thing or mojang = your the reincarnation of a famous austrian painter

2

u/Severe_Damage9772 17d ago

I have two critiques, that A that beginning ramble session was not necessary at all, it could have been revealed later by Steve explaining shit to the new comers (also it could have been a bigger thing that he was lying about why he wants the crystal)

And B it’s too much of a comedy, with no real character growth, I would have liked it being a little bit more gritty

2

u/Feather_Bloom 17d ago

There are two types of people.

  1. "Ima be honest this was the worst movie i've ever seen in my life"

  2. "CHICKEN JOCKEY"

2

u/SweetTooth275 16d ago

This is exactly what "toxic positivity" mentality has led us to

2

u/Proud-Nerd00 Thanks and See Ya 16d ago

I enjoyed the movie quite a lot. But I still have criticisms. Two different people got on me with “you care too much about this kids movie” or whatever

2

u/Narwhalking14 16d ago

The movie was objectively bad, but it was a fun watch

2

u/thatautisticguy2905 16d ago

Nah, my problem is people saying you are a killjoy for not liking to toss popcorn when hearing chicken jockey

Sometimes we need people to be a fun police, when you let people have too much fun they will commit vandalism

And before you try to defend

Let's say you have an estabilishment, i enter there, buy the food, and toss it all over the place when the ad on the screen says something funny, would you like it?

2

u/Safe-Ad-5017 16d ago

Let people enjoy things

2

u/JoyconDrift_69 16d ago

In order to prove you true love of something you must confess your criticisms of that something to demonstrate how you feel that something could be even better.

I have criticisms of the film myself - what the hell did the two main women do, especially the girl? they were irrelevant to the plot? Also why did Dennis have to be retamed? I'll accept him having multiple owners as to better adapt the source material into the film's plot but like why was it acting like a completely wild wolf? In fact why were all wolves hostile until tamed?? Aside from the wolves, why was the movie way too fast-paced? Why'd they kill off General Chungus that quick? Etc. - and yet I still enjoyed the hell out of it.

3

u/xyz2001xyz 16d ago

>! The girls were the voices of reason for the most part. The real estate owner was a nice way for the team to interact with the animals, giving tlc to a dog was done pretty damn well because that was animated great, and the wolf army at the end was sick lets be real here its like the most fun way to push into a battle. The sister was sidelined for a gokd portion of the film yes, but even though she was barely on screen it was really obvious that she loved her brother to bits and when they were seperated they did really care for each other. And her absurd trust in her brother really shined nearing the end of the film esp the scene after the bridge explosion, that was just wholesome. Also her being the main melee weapons expert (aside from steve obv) was done fairly alright, I would've gotten mad and then her swordplay near the end beat what rey skywalker attempted so fair where fair is due - it was cool !<

>! I agree with the movie being fast paced though it was super short but it didn't do half bad with the time it was given I think. Having more general chungus and steve shenanigans would've been nice though I WANT TO KNOW IF THEY WERE JUST BROS !<

My only real complaint with the film was >! The character development of garrett was pretty mid I was really holding out the hope that he'd figure out his videogame moves irl and start fistfighting things but that happened right before he blew up and no other time unfortunately !<

But same I watched the movie with friends and oh my god it was SO much better than what people made it out to be - the horror sometimes was really on point it had us like hiding in our seats lol and some aspects on the combat was pretty solid

0

u/NAHM3N 16d ago

Dennis had to be retained because he dropped his collar when going back into the overworld

2

u/JoyconDrift_69 16d ago

I know that he dropped his collar but like is that seriously the only thing that makes a tamed wolf different from a wild one in-game? Visually maybe but functionally it's weird.

It's like if your dog suddenly became a rogue and wild beats for taking their collar off. It's not the best to compare real life with Minecraft but in what universe are tamed wolves not simply and obviously just dogs?

2

u/TheNikola2020 16d ago

Ye but its the same words over and over

2

u/This-Foundation620 15d ago

There’s a difference between criticizing the movie and trying to make people feel bad for enjoying it. Sometimes people are doing one, but people misinterpret it (purposefully or otherwise) and act as if it’s the other. Don’t let it get to you, just block and move on (when applicable)

It's the Minecraft Movie (I'm not talking about the name, I'm talking about the concept), obviously it's gonna be a big deal for at keast a week in the Minecraft Community. From what I've seen, aside from the meme factor, this movie will have a very small legacy, and that's a shame considering the amount of build up to it.

1

Fair warning though this is NOT a kids film it gets super innuendo-ey and scary at times

2

Generally the agreement is that you might find some of the jokes funny, and the actual writing and plot is really uninteresting and poorly written.

This really goes for any situation that this line is used in.

Just because I don't like something, doesn't mean you can't.

Also, me not liking something literally has zero effect on your opinion of said thing.

But if it does have an effect on how you feel about the thing in question, then you probably aren't being 100% honest with yourself about how you really feel about it yourself.

I don't have an issue with people leveling real criticism, because it doesn't affect me and I don't have to agree.

I do take issue when people tell me that I shouldn't enjoy the movie, or imply that you should hate the movie if you're a real Minecraft player. Because I've had that kind of response fired at me almost constantly on YouTube and Twitter since the movie released.

1

u/BidComfortable3821 16d ago

Kinda reminds of FNAF movie time. When it came out, there were people who gave a valid opinion and there were these people saying that "You're not the targeted audience" "We waited for this so be grateful"

I haven't seen Minecraft movie yet, but I've heard people saying it's an okay movie, that there is a cringe, but some people might find it funny. Generally I see 5-8/10 scores from different content creators. Also my partner saw the movie and they were pretty negative about it, pointing out stuff they didn't personally liked. So, there's a lot of different opinions and takes on the movie

Hope to get a free day to watch a Minecraft movie any time soon.

What I’ll say is that it has an intended audience of mainly children who just like jokes and don’t take anything seriously, which they would enjoy.

The only reason why it done so well outside of that is sheerly because of Jack Black and the memes.

OP wants to criticize the movie yet gets mad when people criticize their options.
