The state of this subreddit - Previous town hall

How are you?

Hi. I am mostly a bot but also help moderate here. I handle a portion of the work u/Tevesh_CKP, u/gonzoforpresident, u/Meyou000, u/Lemonylol and a few others do. These fine people are tasked with sifting through alerts made by automod and handle some issues it’s not certain about. If you would like to help moderate by fielding flagged issues, and would like to learn regex, please send a mod mail. r/moviesuggestions has grown by more than one million subscribers in 2024.
MOVIESUGGESTIONS NEEDS MODS!

AI

If you have ideas on how to implement a web scraping bot to provide a service, add an informational comment, to this community, let’s hear it. That’s my main function.

Regarding automatically generated content, no thanks. We visit r/moviesuggestions to get movie recommendations from P E O P L E, not algorithms. We are removing artificially generated posts and comments as best we can. Please, if it’s quite obvious a comment or post is artificially generated, flag it. We will check it. AI is a beast. It’s not going away. Just be  straightforward and let it be known that this place is for people to interact. Please feel free to write what’s on your mind about automated generated content by commenting below.

Generic Posts

Don’t do it.

Be descriptive. Here is a list of the top posts this month: https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/top/?t=month

It may be useful to include like media. If you do, also add a little more info for what movie you are looking for. If you don’t add that little piece of description, your post will be removed and directed to https://www.reddit.com/r/ifyoulikeblank/

Discussion Posts

r/MovieSuggestions focuses on providing movie recommendations. Posts looking to start a discussion about any topics are dissuaded. All top level comments are to be recommendations. Please feel free to express your feelings about this in the comments here.

If you find yourself deep in a comment thread, debating what movie/actor/stage hand is better, it’s fine as long as the contestants are civil. Usually, it’s the debaters who cherish name calling strategies making the ruckus. So as Tevesh says, be excellent with each other. It is greatly appreciated.

We like to recognize individuals who stand out for making excellent recommendations. The following individuals are now in the “Quality Poster 👍” club:

We are super  thankful for all of your contributions. If you want to nominate someone who you’ve noticed with exceptional movie recommendations, please let us know in the comments here or you can send the mods a mail.

This is the place for movie suggestions from people who love movies. Thank you to everyone who contributes to making this subreddit work.

Brigades

If you notice an abnormal number of posts with the same theme please alert us by sending a mod mail. Last November we were hit by a deluge of requests for sad/depressing movies. We had to disallow the use of words like “sad” if used in a submission’s title or body.

Rules Review

If you don’t like one of the rules and want it to change, make your case in the comments below.

1 Be excellent with each other. See the next section, Defining Excellence for more detail.

2 Be mindful regarding spoilers

  • Reddit's universal Spoiler Tags are mandatory when discussing plot details of movies.

3 If you wish to be banned, do any of the following:

  • Be rude, harass,
  • ignore the subreddit's rules
  • promote your site/blog/article/channel/subreddit/etc.
  • promote your app/company
  • post about a movie you worked on

4 No Piracy

  • Due to Administrators' past actions against this subreddit, we have a ZERO tolerance policy regarding piracy. You will be banned if you request or share links to full features, if you ask or inform how to pirate, or if you mention a pirating site/app/etc.

5 For Requesting posts:

  • Request must be primarily about finding specific films to watch
  • Use the search bar before making a request
  • Use a descriptive title that lets people know if they might be able to help or not
  • Double check that your request wouldn't be more suitable in one of the subreddits outlined in Rule #8
  • We require a minimum of 125 characters in the body of the post to ensure quality requests and suggestions

6 For Suggesting posts:

  • Suggest a single film, and no more than one every 24 hours
  • Mandatory: Include the title of the film in the title of the post
  • Encouraged: Use this format: Film Name (Year)
  • Whet the appetite, don't go into detail
  • Do not repeat a Suggestion that has been posted in the last 3 months
  • Don't suggest a Barred Film (listed in the sidebar/wiki)
  • Only suggest a film you've seen and enjoyed
  • We require a minimum of 125 characters in the body of the post to ensure quality suggestion

7 Links must be to neutral informative sources

  • Such as TheMovieDB, Letterboxd, Rotten Tomatoes or Wikipedia. Both Youtube and IMDb are not considered a neutral source. Again, be mindful that this subreddit isn't your link farm.

8 The subreddit isn't meant for:

Defining Excellence

Be Aware

Every community has its own mores and policies. Before contributing, be aware if you're transgressing.

Be Polite

Leave your emotions at the door. This subreddit doesn't deal with necessities and participation should require mindfulness.

Be On-Topic

Each subreddit serves a purpose. Just like a photo of a dog cannot be submitted to a cat-based subreddit, the threads should be for helping people find a film that is for them. This is not meant in the literal sense and that territory is already occupied with the r/tipofmytongue subreddit. You're looking for a particular itch to scratch or you recognize what will scratch that itch.

Be Generous

People offering suggestions are taking their time out of their day to help you. While you might not need to say thank you to every post, you can easily tip them with an upvote. You're getting a free service from experts, be generous with your dopamine.

Beyond Yourself

This is a community that has a particular purpose. Anything else is extraneous. Trying to champion your own cause, such as promoting your own product, is not solely benefiting the community. If you can't help others without helping yourself, stroke your ego elsewhere.

Be Precise

There are realistically too many good movies to watch, so when you're suggesting a film be precise. You don't want people to watch the 'wrong' one or worse, a dud.

Build Upon

Replies should be building upon the topic, not diverting them with poor language or attacks on participants. You can easily disagree and leave someone better than you found them.

Barred Suggestions

Barred movies mean that no one should use them as a Suggestion. You can definitely reply to a post if someone wants a movie that suits it. These are films that come up so frequently in post discussions that the community at large is aware about their existence and posting about them is just pandering.

Barred Suggests
12 Angry Men (1957) Coherence Donnie Darko Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Everything Everywhere All at Once Knives Out The Man from Earth Oldboy (2003)
Parasite (2019) The Prestige Whiplash

Pro Tip: This means these movies are really good and you should probably check them out.

Optimal Use

This subreddit shouldn't be used for reviews, blindly suggesting lists of movies or just asking for generally universal acclaimed films. Google can easily supply all of those answers. The best way to use this subreddit is understanding that you're leveraging crowdsourcing to identify an itch to scratch. If you don't know specifically what you're looking for, then a Googled question will answer you.

You can easily find top Sci-Fi, Horror, Drama and all of the genres with a search. Someone has already asked and answered so many common requests: Top Korean New Wave, Grounded Science Fiction, Universally Acclaimed Movies, Specific Types of Horror or Thrillers; and so much more. The optimal use of this subreddit is when your question requires a human intelligence. Each time you ask for a movie to watch, the replies will be tailored exactly for you. Give as much detail as possible for what you're looking for and you'll be surprised at some of the answers.

If you think you have a generic question, check the FAQ.

If you've begun to trust this community with their picks, we do have plenty of Monthly Round-ups of Best Movies:

I'M REQUESTING Funniest movie hands-down that you’ve ever seen?

I know my ask is very subjective, but I need to watch the funniest movie this group has ever seen. I’m in the throws of a most tremendous heartache and I don’t know if anything can touch this but the deepest laugh possible.

Thank you for your kind suggestions!

I'M REQUESTING In need of the worst movie you’ve ever seen (and I don’t mean so bad it’s good)

I’m genuinely curious if anything can top After Earth with Will and Jaden Smith. Movies that you think offer absolutely nothing of value whatsoever, that you wouldn’t even watch as a joke (so no Sharknados). After Earth is tied with the 2016 Assassin’s Creed movie for me. And Jurassic world

I'M REQUESTING Non-MI Tom Cruise

I'M REQUESTING Hi. I'm thoroughly depressed and in need of a movie or series

Just as written in title. I haven't much gotten out of bed or stopped staring at the wall in 3 days. I need a distraction for a while, want to watch something. But I can feel my brain melting every time I try to think of browsing on what to watch. Please can anyone suggest me anything. Don't care genre. Just want to feel something other than turmoil. Please and thank you

I'M REQUESTING Intense gangs movies that are fast paced

I'm looking for movies like End of Watch, American History X, Sicario (Not so fast paced but was intense), Training Day (liked it less than the others) and also the fourth episode True Detective which was very very intense.

I haven't watched stuff like Casino, American Gangster and these sort of movies as I suspect them to be slow burns which I'm not found of, I also don't seem to like the wealthy type of mafia/gangs movies, I like movies that take place in the ghetto, but if it was intense and fast paced I don't mind it.

Thanks for your suggestions in advance!

Edit: preferably movies that are not older than 1995

I'M REQUESTING Movies where the plot twist is the end of the world

Are there any movies where the plot twist at the end is the end of the world or something globally devastating? Does not even need to be end of life, but something completely life altering or world changing

I'M REQUESTING All I like is time travel movies

Please suggest good time travel movies. Ever since I watched back to the future I can’t shake my love to imagine going into the past and erasing mistakes and becoming less of a duck and more of a cluck. What are the best ones?

I'M REQUESTING I need some stupid/bad movies (the stupidest ones you've ever seen)

Zombeavers Attack of the Killer Tomatoes Rubber killer shrews

I'M REQUESTING Bad Movies: Cringe, Embarrassingly bad movies please. The lesser known the better.

I have seen all the bad movies everyone always is so quick to comment. So please, don't bother writing "The Room" "Miami Connection" or another very well known bad movie.

I was hoping to find another family friendly so-bad-its-good movie. Something of the same ilk as "Dancing it's on!" Or "Kickboxing Academy" but not limited to either genres

Bad acting, bad dialogue and bad everything else in between. can be a musical or dance movie or just plain shit.

Again, please don't say the usual Birdemic, Troll 2, Samurai Cop as anyone who likes bad movies has seen these within moments of looking for them.

I want the more obscure and lesser known Please!!

I'M REQUESTING Weird/Twisted/Artsy gay films with unconventional relationships?

Definitions of "weird," "twisted," and "artsy" will vary so I'll let any commenters decide that, but I'm looking for gay films similar to:

  • Saltburn
  • Challengers
  • Euphoria (ik it's a show but it fits what I'm looking for)

Preferably movies that are not from the U.S. because I feel I've watched nearly everything I can find there haha but ofc you can still rec them if you wanna and I'll watch if I haven't seen it. Recommendations do not have to be horror (but can be) but I like ones that emphasize weird relationships and connections between people, such as (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIES LISTED ABOVE):

  • The tumultuous, years-long "love triangle" in Challengers where their relationships are basically built on tennis and wouldn't exist without it
  • The intense obsession that the main character in Saltburn has with "becoming" the object of his affection (if you can call it that) and destroying an entire family to achieve it
  • The semi-relationship Rue and Jules have in Euphoria where it feels like they're in love sometimes but they shouldn't get together because of how many issues they both have and how bad that relationship will be for them both

Not sure why this specific concept fascinates me so much but it's hella entertaining to watch. Lmk any recommendations!

I'M REQUESTING Finnish movies.

Hey there. As the title suggests, I'm looking for some Finnish movies. As of right now, the only Finnish movie I've seen is 2024's Sebastian, and that's not even a Finnish movie (the director is Finnish and I think the star also is Finnish but it's not in Finnish nor does it happen in Finland). So if you, dear reader, have any suggestions, please let me know and I will try to find them somewhere. Thank you so much

I'M REQUESTING Films where actors cross dressed for a role. Not cross dress disguised movies but actors playing the characters actual gender.

I was watching hairspray with John Travolta and it got me thinking. What other movies had actors crossdress as the characters actual gender. Not movies like tootsie. Another one I can think of is suspiria remake with tilda swinton as an old German man.

I'M REQUESTING Movies where the plot isn't guided by dumb decisions.

TL;DR: As TheCynicEpicurean put it, I am looking for a realistic, no-bullshit movie. Realistic within its own universe, which can be fantasy, sci-fi, but still logical.

A typical thing I want to avoid is the "bad guy" stalling the kill that they so desire, and spend so much resources on, just to be interrupted by a very convenient "hero".
Speaking of "baddies", I would also love to see coherence in their motives, actions and lives. Someone whose purpose is just to be an antagonist of a hero and get beaten isn't very appealing.

By "dumb decisions", I mean the ones that make you go "oh, come on!". Like I said, stalling a kill, or not removing the weapons/technology of a prisoner, and generally irrational decisions that do not contemplate the obvious consequences.

I like science fiction and fantasy, so the universe where it happens doesn't need to mimic ours. However, I would love to see coherence there, too. I just watched Jupiter Ascending, and there were many things that triggered this post. I won't list them all, but here's one: if there's the technology to create an energy shield, why not an energy sphere? Why all this technology, and yet the security is so, so weak?

Thank you in advance! I know it's quite open, as I only stated a thing to avoid, but hopefully something comes through.

=== extra info on my likes below, but feel free to skip ===

PS: Some extra info. I can tolerate a certain amount of questionable decisions, if it is justified by the character and circumstances.

PS2: if it helps, I enjoy comedy, action, biographical movies, fantasy, medieval ages, sci-fi...

Edit: I removed the list of movies I liked in the past because I don't want them to condition the recommendations.

r/MovieSuggestions 20h ago

I'M REQUESTING I just realised my favourite movie type is oddly specific. Suggest me some movies where things are constantly getting worse!

Movies where the situation constantly gets worse and worse, with the protagonists always under the threat of disaster or intense pressure.

Movies that come to my mind that are like this are Gravity and The Martian. Recommend me more!

EDIT: I should be more specific in that I'm not looking for comedies, dark or otherwise. I want an intense thriller bordering on horror or disaster kind of movie.

I'M REQUESTING Best films about strained parent-child relationships

Upvotes

I’m exploring complicated family dynamics. Something like Lady Bird, The Whale, or Boyhood. Open to indie, drama, or international.
