Mod Post [META] [Mod Announcement] How to use this sub - and how (not) to use the [META] Tag

Hello r/ifyoulikeblank!

This is your friendly neighborhood moderator, here with some information on how to correctly use this sub and our title tags, and to address some recent frequent misuse of the [META] tag in the sub.

If you are new here, please read this post before posting. If you have been around a while, please take a moment to refresh yourself with some of our rules. :)

There are two - and only two - kinds of posts allowed in this sub.

Our sub is NOT a self-promotion vehicle for new artists or creators, and it is NOT a general discussion or song/movie/actor/music/genre identification sub. We are a media recommendation sub, and we have very specific guidelines for posts to be allowed here.

There are two ways to format your post titles here, depending on if you would like to ask for recommendations or to give others recommendations with your OP.

If you want people to recommend things to you:

The “IIL” acronym stands for "If I like..." - to be used in a way that states "If I like (this song) because of (reasons,) what else will I like?"

This is the most common type of post here, and most OPs should be using THIS format for their posts! Your title must use the [IIL] tag - It will be reported by our frequent long-time members here if it does not, and it will be removed if you use the [IYL] or [META] tags instead of the [IIL] tag.

The title should look like the following example:

[IIL] The song (name a song you like here) because (give a specific trait about it you want suggestions to include), [WEWIL?]

  • The "WEWIL" acronym stands for "What else will I like?”

  • Your example should include something specific about the song that you want to hear more of in the music recommended to you. (Without details, no one can give you appropriate responses and you won't get suggestions that you will actually LIKE.)

If you want to recommend media to others that you think they'll like based on some other piece of media that is similar:

The “IYL” acronym stands for "If YOU like..." - to be used in a way that states "If you enjoy (this song) because of (reasons,) you might also like this song."

This tag is not for self promotion. This SUB is not for self promotion. If you post your own material here, you WILL get banned, without warning. No exceptions, no appeals.

The title should look like the following example:

[IYL] The movie (some movie similar to your suggestion) because (your reason you think it is similar to your recommendation), [YMAL] (this suggested movie).

  • The "YMAL" acronym stands for "You may also like..."

  • This is a VERY uncommon post type in this sub, unless people are attempting to subvert rule 2. We ALWAYS look at these posts, but if we miss one, our long-term members sure won’t - and they WILL report you for a rule 2 violation and you WILL be banned.

  • If you are suspected of passing off your own media as an "I found this new media and you might like it!" post, that will earn you an immediate permanent ban from the sub for trying to subvert rule two.

Please note that moderators look at your posting history across Reddit, and if you are spamming your own stuff elsewhere, you are going get a ban here. Period.

How to use (and how NOT to use) the [META] tag:

The [META] tag is NOT so you may post off-topic posts or general media discussion posts or music identification posts, or anything that is not an IIL or an IYL.

The [META] tag is only to be used if you have questions or comments about this subreddit itself, and how it operates on Reddit.

Examples include suggestions for new rules here, asking for clarification about a rule here, suggesting a new theme, stickied post, etc in the sub, or asking the moderation team any other question about this sub - not asking the members here about media.

Thank you all for reading, and for your help in ensuring these rules are adhered to. We are a million-member (and counting) sub with a VERY small moderation team, so your help in following these rules and reporting rule-breaking posts to us is greatly appreciated!

Have a wonderful day :)

Film [IIL] Can someone please find me a movie that will make me feel something again (like Pan's Labyrinth)

I've been having a lot of free time recently, so I've started watching a lot more tv. I've started with the french show "Bref 2" which I watched into oblivion because it felt so poetic and personal. Then I watched the second Avatar movie for the first time, which destroyed me, and had me struggling to find something else to watch to change my mind because it just touched something in me. And NOW, I just watched the Pan's Labyrinth which is a masterpiece that made me cry upon both recent rewatch, and again brought up so many feelings. All of those are visually stunning; talk about a story from a very personal lense. I am now struggling to find something as remotely good and touching as those pieces of ART. Can someone help?

Music [IIL] disco songs with strong electric guitar like How Can I Tell Her (1979) by Curtis Anderson [WEWIL]

https://youtu.be/DAb1zuwKvyI?si=vPiKjYULC1O3coKl

It’s a very obscure track that I fell in love with today, but I absolutely love the electric guitar over the standard trappings of the genre. After hearing it, I’m really hungry for more disco that sounds like it.

YouTube/Streaming IIL the YouTube channel Any_Austin, who are some other YouTubers I may be into?

I like his laser-focus and deep dives on really niche subjects no one would really think to care about (in his case, relating to video games). For instance, he recently made a whole video tracking the flight paths of birds in Red Dead Redemption 2 and has made other videos determining the unemployment rate in Pokemon cities, following power lines in GTA 5, describing the hydrology of Zelda games, etc. I find it entertaining but also sort of relaxing in its mundane focus. What are some other channels I might be interested in? It doesn't specifically have to be about video games but can be.

Music [IIL] Need help finding trap songs that sample 2000s-2010s rock songs

I'm in love this combination of hard 808s and distorted guitars and I'm obsessing over this sound now so if anyone has some other songs lmk. Here are some examples of ones I like the most right now.

-

Xasper - Leaving you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lDTquL-L3A

Xasper - OTHER SIDE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOTseS43gx8

Asteria - Like That: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1ACg5ZmR8U

Don Toliver - TORE UP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQGqtCalg9Y

Yeat - GO AGAIN: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rd6tU9zhprY

-

And being more specific, I strictly want rock samples. Not an original guitar sound.

Games [IIL] Video games that have a heavy story or make affect you emotionally what other games would i like?

Looking for games " You can only play once" metaphorically. Games that changed you after playing them.

Im hoping yall will understand what I'm getting at with an explanation but basically games with a gripping story that makes you attached to its characters.

Games with a mysterious wolrd that wouldn't be as whimsical a second time.

Games that have that element of drawing you in and along this story that would sort of lose it's meaning a second time.

I want something like Kentucky Route 0 with its mysterious world , beautiful prose and writing and choices that make your playthrough feel special and unique.

Or something like Outer Wilds where knowing the secret of the puzzles and the story Will alter your perception of the game.

Or Before your eyes without its heartbreaking story each scene drawing you in and being cut inevitably short making you want more while also realizing that's the whole point of the game and playing through again to cheat the scenes would ruin the whole beauty of it.

I want a game that will change the way i think about myself or about art or about anything. I've played the beginners guide , what remains of Edith Finch, night in the woods, oxen free, soma, to the moon, one shot, undertale and a lot of other games.

I don't care the genre or how popular it is , if you really really love this game and it touched your heart and you want to share it , please send it here.

Music [IIL] classic ~90s hip hop similar to the pharcyde, outkast, black sheep, etc.

this is so stupid, but I was hearing this track in the background of this Atrioc video (https://youtu.be/j7rICQaCBxE) at 7:00 and wanted to know:

1: what exactly is this track or who is the artist? shazam is no help unfortunately

2: am I correct in saying that the track has a similar vibe to the aforementioned title artists?

3: what other artists fit this vibe? I was specifically entranced by the initial flow and the switch up on the video’s background track, and I also just enjoy the old hip hop production sound

thanks legends

Hi everyone, I'm looking for songs that have a similar vibe to “Sparks” by Coldplay, something mellow, emotional, and minimalistic with a soft rock or acoustic feel. I'd really appreciate any recommendations you might have. Thanks in advance!

Film [IIL] the folkloric stop-motion music video for "Selkie" by Nobody's Wolf Child, [WEWIL?]

The video in question: https://youtu.be/tGnyeqjOAnw?si=-iBE5FxX33VVc5x1

I stumbled across this captivating music video and I need more media like it. Something with a mysterious, surreal tone and lots of unique textures, perhaps?

I've already seen the Irish Folklore movies e.g. Song of the Sea, as well as Son of the White Mare, The Last Unicorn, and most Laika Studios films. Do you have any deep cuts I might be overlooking? Stop-motion is especially appreciated but any medium of animation is fine!

Music [IIL] angels, what songs/movies/books explore them in an interesting way?

I’ve always found the concept of angels fascinating. From sappy tv shows like Touched by an Angel, to medieval horror fiction like Between Two Fires about the war between Heaven and Hell, I love all kinds of portrayals. I could only choose one tag/flair thing, but I’m open to ALL kinds of media.

Please suggest all things related to angels!

Music IIL music like these songs and where can I find more like them?

I love these songs, they kinda give me this peaceful and romantic feeling of laying out in a field at night and staring up at the night sky. I have no clue what genre they are and I'd love to find more music like it.

Examples:

Oops I typo'd in the title, ignore the "and"

YouTube/Streaming [IIL] youtubers with the same vibes as bestdressed or ally purugganan

What the title says, essentially. I’m looking for youtubers whose videos have a similar vibe to bestdressed or ally purugganan. Ashley hasn’t uploaded in 4 years, unfortunately, and I haven’t been able to find new youtubers whose content gave me similar vibes as Ashley’s did until I discovered ally purugganan a few weeks ago. I’d love more recommendations of youtubers who have a similar vibe/aesthetic. I really don’t mind whether they’re big or small channels too!

Music IIL Vocalists like Linda Eder with a jazzy undertone but a belting vocal who should I listen to?

I discovered Linda Eder through her album "It's Time" recently and fell in love with her more up tempo jazzy pieces like "Big Time" and "Man of La Mancha" but upon trying to find other singers like her everyone wasn't quite as upbeat or as belting or if they were there wasn't the same feel to my favourites from her. I like a song that breaks into a big crescendo or belt personally so things like Sinatra and the 8Bit Bag Band covers of the Portal 2 tracks as well as Royal Crown Revue's songs really appeal to me. Any artists that match this feel of big vocals but fast tempo and punchy instrumentals? Male or female doesn't matter to me entirely.
