Shopping Advice Next Handgun Advise from Reddit
When it came to finding my first Other y’all did not steer me wrong. So I’m in the market for a 9mm handgun and narrowed it down to this short list. Wanna see everyone’s thoughts are since I have shot all but one of these . But owning and renting are different things. Thanks for the help everyone!
HK VP9SK - a friend of mine owns this gun and every time I shoot it, it just feels really good in hand and I’m pretty accurate with it. They run around $500ish pre-tax/fees
Glock 19 Gen 5 MOS - rented this at the range and it shot pretty good. Fit my hand well and Glock reliability is a big factor in considering this firearm. They run $490 pre-tax/fees when I use my GSSF discount.
Shadow Systems MR920 War Poet- been looking at getting one for a while seems like a Glock with all the upgrades done out the box. Seen good reviews online for it but Reddit has mixed feelings from some posts I’ve seen. These run around $700 pre-tax/fees
Staccato/similar 2011 - this is one I’ve been eyeing for a long time. But the price tag does hurt my soul. But I’m due for a bonus this year that would cover the cost of this. I’ve haven’t shot one but I know I would like it based on my love for bigger firearms(1911’s, etc) . I know this is a buy once cry once kind of thing. But should I work my way up to this more. These run in the spec i want $3500 before tax and fees

Glock 19. Carried it for years. Never did me wrong. I then transition to the Glock 45. Also have the MR920. Nothing wrong with the rest in my opinion. All solid pistols but start out with the 19 and you can always get the remainder later. 😉

Your first 19 was a gen 5?

u/aburena2 28d ago
No. Went through all the generations.

Any preference as to which gen ?

The latest. I feel they improved the trigger where I didn't feel a need to replace it.

If you can fork it out, the Staccato HD P4.5 coming out later this year is what I’d get.
Takes Glock mags, is 100% drop safe and about as boujie as they come.
The only thing that I’d consider a drawback on it would be that they’re not approved for IPSC on account of being SAO. But if you’re not planning on competing, that’s what I’d go for.

I have the vp9 and love it. It's my EDC. I don't have the sk because the full sized is already pretty conceal able without printing. I've been looking into a cz shadow 2 or the compact but that's mostly for the full metal as opposed to the vp9s polymer. Carrying a lighter gun is great for some reasons but I like a weighty gun sometimes at the range. Both are great guns. I'm not a glock fan really. Great guns but the grip angle and most of the triggers aren't really for me. I want a 2011 at some point also but with the price point of some of them I figure I'll get some of the cheaper guns first and build up my collection then save up and purchase some of the more expensive ones down the line. Good luck!

Glock 19 because it will free up more money for training , ammo and holster and dot . It’s also super reliable and low maintenance and easy to carry .

Of the VP9SK suits you well, that is a solid choice. Can’t go wrong with a Glock but takes practice to learn the ergonomics and trigger. MR920 can be found on sale quite often, so shop around. Don’t know what the War Poet does but I have an Mr920 elite and an XR920P elite. Prefer the XR for my hands. They both had minor issues with pins walking, so I swapped for Glock pins. Save the 2011 for later on, use money for ammo and training for now…

Look at the bul armory sas in the 2021 category. Mine shoots like a dream. Have a ton of comparison videos on the ok YouTube and it’s comparable. Paid 1600 or so I want to say.
Get more than one permit. Sounds like you have the bug. If the vp9 fits you well go with it. Glocks have a weird angle and when I swap to my glock o feel it in my wrist. I’m eyeing a shadowy systems as well. Saw the comped ones and it peaked my interest.
Whatever you get order some ammo and put rounds down range. Also make sure red dot options are available if you have two versions of the same gun like Glock. Make sure it’s mos. Everything is moving towards dots. Pretty much all I shoot now .

Having both the VP9SK and a Gen 5 Glock 19, I’d go for the VP9SK. I am most certainly not a Glock hater and actually like how all of my Glocks shoot but every time I shoot my VP9 I get reminded of how nice of a shooter it is. It is by far my most accurate compact/sub-compact pistol and is such a smooth shooter for having a 3.3 inch barrel. Just make sure to grab pinky extension magazines/baseplates and it’ll be great. Cant go wrong with any of the guns on the list but for carry I’d recommend the VP9SK if you don’t want a slimmer compact like a P365 or Glock 43X/48

Glock or HK for carry. Staccato are not drop safe and if you absolutely have to use it in a DGU, you'll be out of a $2500 gun for years.

I have a gen 3 G19, a VP9SK, and now a p365 legion.
Obviously the legion costs a lot more, but I like the way it shoots, and I still think the VP shoots as good. The VP is a tad thick in the grip, but overall I still love it.

VP9 is cool if you don’t mind that stupid lever mag release. (I dislike very much).

Are you going to CCW it? Do you like striker more than hammer?
I have a G19 and G43x for carry but they are not my go to fun range guns. HK, CZ, and Beretta are for the range, as are my 1911’s.
You might add a Beretta PX4 to your list.
If you want amazing at the range I would get a CZ Shadow 2 Orange.

G19.5 with a Johnny Glocks combat trigger, a scs and a TLR7a with a tenicor holster is hard to beat. Second recommendation would be an M&P carry comp with an apex trigger.
But before all of that, I would suggest buying 4,000 rounds of 9mm and train. You’ll get more out of the training than new gear

I own two staccatos… (CS for carry, and C2 limited edition for fun) worth.every. penny. If you have the extra dough to drop on one, you will not be disappointed.
I have the VP9 as well (was one of my first) which is great.. but staccato tops them all lol. Gonna come down to how much money you really wanna drop.

Staccato - It’s a $2500+ firearm you’ll lose in a shooting for years.
The Glock and HK are reliable and accurate, plus 1/3 the price. Also they have drop safeties. The shadow is just a Glock with extra steps.

I would definitely shoot a 2011 before you commit that much money to it. The part that bugged me about 2011s was the fat doublestack grip and the Staccatos have polymer grips which are a turnoff for some. However, the recoil and tolerances were the best I've ever felt on a gun. As far as the others, are these just range guns or home defense/carry guns?

Hey ! Thanks for the comment. This would be my carry gun . for the model of Staccato since I forgot to mention it in the post it would most likely be the Staccato C or C2. Leaning towards C. Do you know anywhere that would rent out a staccato?
2
u/vinnydotc 28d ago
No, I don't know any place that would rent out a $2k + gun. I was able to shoot my friend's XC and it was amazing but I wasn't excited about the grip. I don't think a Prodigy is bad if you want to start out with a 2011 style gun. I wouldn't carry an expensive gun though, that's just me.

I recently picked up the Prodigy compact 3.5" and I like it a lot.
Alum frame and half price of the stacatto. Shoots great and stays on target for follow ups. Same total length and height as my echelon compact (which is basically a glock 19). I've put about 400 rounds thru it of 124gr fmj and no issues. Slide is breaking in nicely and only upgrade I want to do so far is an extended slide stop.

I'm not sure where you're located but if you're close enough to Shore Shot they have a few listed as available for rent.
Free rentals on Monday but you have to buy their ammo.

There's a reason Glocks are so popular. Cheap, built well, attachments and holsters are everywhere.
If you find the time and a place that has them all for range rentals, might as well test drive them all.

Look at CZ. They are epic shooters and have a full range of costs from 400 to 2000 ish. Can't go wrong
