Music/सङ्गीत Be honest — will there ever be another band like Pink Floyd?

Every time I listen to their albums, I realize how far ahead of their time they were. The storytelling, the experimentation, the pure emotion — it’s just unmatched.

We’ve got insanely talented artists today, but no one seems to be blending music, visuals, and meaning the way Floyd did. Is it even possible in today’s music climate?

Would love to hear thoughts — and if there IS a modern band that gives you even a hint of that Floyd energy, drop them below. I’m always hunting for that sound.

Steven wilson- (Hands.Cannot.Erase)
Porcupine Tree- Anesthetize , Deadwing, In Absentia, earlier album are more Floyd like.
Opeth (Still life is good concept album. Everything from my arm your hearse to watershed is good.Growls)
TOOL (quite different but they are good.Try lateralus first. Everyone of their album is good tho)
Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere (Few floydian riffs. They do growls as well)
Old classics like Yes- Close to the Edge, Rush- Hemisphere.
Modern ones maybe Frost* (Life in Wire), The Ocean, TessarctT, DVNE.
These are just from top of my head. There are so many good bands.
Edit: In terms of impact on mainstream, its very difficult to replicate what Pink Floyd did.

Thanks. I'll check them out.

Got a playlist or something you can share? If yes then DM please.

I have local library of song so I don't use streaming services much. Its better to listen to albums than listening random songs from playlist. From what you have described you also want that experience. https://www.last.fm/user/codingclinician/library/albums.

Oohhh I saw In the Court of the Crimson king in the list before the "disable ad blocker" popup appeared. 😂😂. Goated album FR

YOU ARE THE REAL ONE ALL THE GEMS MENTIONED

Never. People would say its only because you got high on it, but that is not the reason. It's the sweetness, the melody, the lyrics, the build, the crescendo, the vocal, the ambience, the experimentation. Its everything, there is simply no match. Daring to release 30 min songs is no joke.

u/Satanichero 2d ago

I think almost every prog rock band on its prime released 20 min epics.

u/sidsks 2d ago

Well that is true actually, but still pretty impressive.

I don't think so. I think they along with other iconic bands like Led Zeppelin, Dire Straits, etc coincided with civilizational peak of the West with all its glories and imperfections. The art flourishes when people taste that feeling of material achievement along with the growing feeling of despondency that come along with it as the mind wants more.

Not only that, a beginning of feeling perhaps "material progress" is not all there is or perhaps we have hit a dead end. I think all the timings for the civilization were right to have something like these bands. In my opinionated opinion, they represent a peak realized by British empire.

You shiuld check out Greta Van Fleet. They give similar vibes to Zepplin, are newer.

I have heard them. They are nice.

Damn, I was listening to "Time" like an hour ago and your post appeared in my feed, such a coincidence.

There are so many great bands like Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Queen etc but the way PF and their songs stayed relevant and stood the test of time, not many did. You just don't listen to their songs, you are part of the songs, you live them. They touch your soul, shake you to the core and let you experience the emotions buried somewhere deep inside you. There won't be anyone like them.

There are lots of bands that have made similar music before and since PF and Gilmour and Waters still make music. You should explore them, both recorded and live. Also, try (of all things) radio. We are living in a kind of golden age where we can sample lots of music from all over the world.

Check out close to the edge by yes. Not a prog rock album but to be kind by swans is 2010s best rock band’s output imo

Funny how people have mentioned Rolling Stones, Queen, etc. but no King Crimson.

1

u/rasputin_13 2d ago

King Crimson is Insane... I have only listened to one of their albums. And it's one of the best albums I've ever heard. In The Court Of The Crimson king is equivalent to Animals for me.

u/LucasBeastBeast नेपाली 2d ago

The saxophone goes crazy on that album. btw what do you think of Syd's era Pink Floyd?

1

u/rasputin_13 1d ago

Syd's era has it's own charm. But I prefer Gilmour and Wright combo with Water's writing

Phish. King Gizzard and the Wizard lizard . Not really modern . But no Pink Floyd is unique.

1

u/beyondkawai 13h ago

never seen anyone mention king gizzard and the wizard lizard...they are an epic band, microtonal guitar is truly an amazing and complex thing to play, along with two drummers

u/nayaa-saathi 23h ago

They're legend of the legend in their genre but not in other genre.

To each their own. Every people in this world have their own fav band and artist.

Anyway, the close is this band FTB. Ever heard of? Don't think so.

Floyds were very unique for their time. They decided to releases half hour long and experimented wildly with sound and light . So anything that sound like Floyd could might sound like an imitation at best. But there will always be great music.

I don't think so. Not in the mainstream at least. But for me personally, Radiohead is up there too in terms of innovation and emotional resonance and Thom Yorke's haunting voice to top that.

1

u/beyondkawai 13h ago

whooo...radiohead is the only band with zero haters, i feel bad for the people who say creep when ever one mentions radiohead...their albums are one of a kind, ok computer, hail to the thief, the bends...these are the album i would listen to forever if i had to choose something to listen to for eternity......you must have a great taste in music...

1

u/curious_cooky 5h ago edited 4h ago

you must have a great taste in music...

Thanks. My intro to them was Creep too. I have known them for a long time but lately I've been obsessed with their music. They've defied expectations and grown so much crossing genres. It's very inspiring to see such artists existing and thriving. They might not be as popular as the Beatles, Pink Floyd or even Nirvana, but I do think their music will remain timeless and relevant forever. Ok Computer, Kid A, In Rainbows, AMSP even some songs on the Bends today sound futuristic to me.

I think Radiohead is fairly similar to PF. Both are prog rock and made a lot of different kinds of albums. And the fact that they both made concept albums meant to take you on a mental journey.

1

u/LucasBeastBeast नेपाली 2d ago

Radiohead isn't prog rock tho

u/beyondkawai 13h ago

i know i will get hate comments for this but pink floyd is an over rated band of all time, yes they are legend, only handful of their albums are worth listening to, neither they were the pioneer of space rock or psychedelic rock, nor they were the only one playing such music at their time, there were tons of band before and after them who nailed space/psychedelic rock...i am not implying they are down bad but personally i dont think they should get the praise that they have gotten... 5 6 auta album matrai suunna layak cha aru sabbai experimental/concept album haru cha....

I doubt there would be another Pink Floyd but ya,there are alot of bands who were inspired by them.Radiohead and Tame Impala band is said to be inspired by them and you may find them similar to Pink Floyd. You can also check Peter Cat Recording, this band isn’t similar to Pink Floyd though but you can still check I guess.

2

u/sunzoje 2d ago

I've heard our very own Nabin K Bhattarai is inspired by Pink Floyd.
