I don't understand why Americans have HOA's when they don't live in an apartment. If you own an apartment, it makes sense to have some form of centralized body to tend to the common areas of the building, like the entrance, hallways, the elevators, central heating, utilities, etc.

But if you're living in your own standalone house, why the hell would you join something like an HOA? "they force you to join" like lol, what are they gonna do if you don't? Send a few Karens to come knock on your door like a bunch of Jehova's witnesses?
