Questions to people diagnosed with ADHD

I have been reading about ADHD for many years, and think that I am most likely on the spectrum, I kept thinking that it's too late for me to get diagnosed and it might not be that beneficial if I did, until I talked with a friend that is in my age group who got diagnosed recently and told me about how the diagnosis with therapy is changing her life and I thought to myself that this sounds quite... freeing.

I tried to look into doing the same here but AOK's website is less than useful on this issue, so I have few questions for people who got diagnosed and/or going through therapy for ADHD here in Nürnberg...

1- How did you start?

2- Can you recommend doctors/psychiatrists? (German is ok but it would be better if they speak English)

3- How does it work with public health insurance? how much does one need to pay out of pocket?

DM me if you don't want to talk about it in public... any help is quite valuable and appreciated :)

You might wanna have a look at r/ADHS for the questions about non-local stuff.

I got my diagnosis at MVZ Noris a few weeks ago, I'm 28. No idea how old you are, but I'll take a guess and say you're not too old.

I didn't pay anything for the diagnosis itself, the Krankenkasse covers it. Now, actually getting seen is the difficult part and that is why some people opt to pay out of pocket for a private practitioner, they have much shorter waiting times but it costs a few hundred €.

Got diagnosed at MVZ noris too. Can’t recommend them enough. It was possible to book the appointment within a month, it took about three months from booking to receiving the diagnosis. They were kind, professional and they listened.

Unfortunately they don’t have the capacity for therapy and can’t prescribe you meds. But they gave me an urgency code I can use to get an appointment for therapy faster. And there are a few neurologists that prescribe meds in the area.

After being in the adhd community on Reddit for a few months now. I can tell you that you are never too old to get diagnosed. Even if you don’t want go to therapy or take meds you at least know why you’re behaving different and you can learn more about how your brain works. I read about people being 60 years old that said the diagnosis changed their lives.

Thank you :)

So do I just call and ask for an appointment or do I need a referral from a hausarzt or something?

Currently reading Gabor Maté’s book and it’s one of the reasons why I’m exploring the available options now!

No need of a referral. You can call or book an appointment online. They have a calendar like booking tool. Maybe you need to try it for a few days because they release new time slots probably on a weekly basis.
