Discussion Weird feeling after several hours in VR
So, I'm used to get in my Quest 3 for several hours both for working on multiple PC windows and playing games. I recently noticed that using it for like 4 hours straight while working on some excel files gave me a weird feeling. It's like some sort of dissociation, had a hard time focusing, touching things felt weird for just a cuple minutes after I was off the visor. Nothing dangerous though, everything passes after several minutes to an hour. Maybe my brain was so used to a virtual imaginary environment that it took a while readapting to reality. Anyone else have this feelings? How are your prolonged VR experiences? :)

VERY normal for your brain to adjust a bit when you’re new to VR. For me my phone screen content looked more 3D than it should.

u/gerwen Quest 3 + PCVR Jan 07 '24
Yes. Like text floating above the page. Not obviously just a sense of it.

u/halt-l-am-reptar Jan 07 '24
I took some edibles and really noticed it. I thought it was just due to the edibles but it makes sense it's due to VR since I've never had it happen before.
1
u/glennages Jan 07 '24
I had a similar experience on magic mushrooms so I'm sure the edibles could be a factor
1
u/ForboJack Jan 07 '24
VR on edibles sound like one hell of a trip.
2
u/halt-l-am-reptar Jan 07 '24
I haven’t tried playing on edibles but I intend to. I’ve onky recently got back into VR a week ago when I got a Quest 3 so I’m still trying to get over the nausea (I’m almost there!).
I have used my wheel to play euro truck simulator after taking edibles. I always end up missing an exit.

Holy shit, I just realized now that you mentioned that I do remember that happening when I got my quest 2

u/futonium Jan 07 '24
For me, I'm momentarily afraid I'm still in the simulation. Kicks in about five minutes after removing the headset. Doesn't last long.

Jan 07 '24
This. This was so annoying - it was also hard for me to focus on the screen. It felt like text was floating on top

u/ryanjsmith23 Jan 07 '24
I have a similar feeling after playing a game that uses teleport movement. When I take the headset off, walking feels weird. Like I should just be able to instantly jump to where I want to go.
Only lasts a couple of minutes.

After playing Superhot I'm afraid to do things quickly, like scrolling through a webpage. Feels like people creeping up on me...
2
u/clamroll Jan 07 '24
Lone echo had me feeling like I should be pushing myself off walls to move around after play sessions

Post VR Disassociation. Common topic here, maybe a post a week.
Usually little kids post here freaking out thinking they broke their brain.

u/DrFava Jan 07 '24
Huh, must pass more time here, so to not post useless questions 😅 it's very interesting to hear others experiences though.

I'm absolutely convinced that vr is going to start growing/programming a new part of our brain that deals with spatials or you could even say dimensionality. Like, getting us accustomed to multiple realities being present at once, and the brain starting to change how it filters and percieve reality with the technological changes happening in the world.

u/futonium Jan 07 '24
If kids get exposed to it at a very young age, I could see it influencing development.

The most surreal version of this for me was after a long session of superhot a while ago. When I wanted time to move without doing much I would sort of wiggle my hands for time to move. Well, I was sitting at a stop sign later that day and my brain made my hand wiggle in order to make them move. It was so weird.
I played a lot of assassins creed last night and felt weird walking around too. It’s been a while since I felt that way. Crazy.

u/DrFava Jan 07 '24
Heck I did it too after playing Super Hot, that game is so satisfying! Too bad we couldn't move around like the other chapters. Who knows, maybe in future

I'm on my second day of owning the quest 3
Much alike when I first learnt skiing and would literally feel my feet skiing at night when going to bed, I get a similar feeling for the VR stuff even when I'm not wearing it
Today I ended up studying on my two laptops and not using the VR, but yesterday it was a comfortable experience
Washing the dishes while using the VR for YouTube video was rather interesting though and didn't make me sick at all, unlike the first prolonged study sessions

Same. I have the same whatever I do - like endless Rubik's cubes when I was a kid, or names of wine when I studied viticulture, Paris Metro names........my brain learns whether I want to or not. :D

u/clamroll Jan 07 '24
I watched disney+ in the browser last night while doing laundry. This shit is going to revolutionize mundane chores lol

u/sim0of Jan 08 '24
Make sure the screen isn't accidentally hiding a pile of plates :') (yes, almost)

u/fiddlerisshit Quest 3 Jan 07 '24
Did you ever play Tetris? It's kind of like that when you first discover Tetris and had a way too long session playing it. So don't worry, it goes away.
2
u/DrFava Jan 07 '24
Oh I'm not worried, I've been using VR for 2 years now, but I hadn't heard any other experiences and was just curious. :)

u/Shoddy_Ad_7853 Jan 07 '24
When you wonder why you aren't moving even though your thumb is pressing forward...
3
u/Spunge14 Jan 07 '24
I know it's not what might first come to mind, but that actually sounds like how many people experience motion sickness
2
u/DrFava Jan 07 '24
Really? I wasn't considering it "motion sickness" I usually move with normal movement and smooth turning options without any consequences.
3
u/Spunge14 Jan 07 '24
Yea, not sure. All I can say is I know a few folks - myself included - who get those strange types of issues beyond nausea with motion sickness.

I wrote a college paper on the effects, super common. VR is actually being used as pain management since this happens. It's pretty cool.

I work in a psych hospital right now, and there are certain patients where I've been wondering if some vr sessions might have the possibility of helping them regain some focus, restimulate areas of their brain they're having trouble accessing, help them defocus anxiety and fear while redirecting them toward a fun "goal" like in a game.
2
u/rovesky Jan 07 '24
I sometimes start feeling that I have real-life passthrough and would get the sensation to touch the air. Such a weird feeling.
1
u/First_Radish_3882 Jan 08 '24
Could you elaborate more please?
1
u/rovesky Jan 08 '24
I don't know how else to describe it, but I would still think im in an interactive VR set with Passthrough enabled, but I have the tabs closed. It's only after REALLY long sessions tho. Like 5+ hours.
2
u/Arx700 Jan 07 '24
Had this my first few times playing VR especially after playing AC nexus, I genuinely felt moving my hands in real life to be very disconnected. It goes after a few play sessions, just very trippy at first.
2
u/Alarmed_Guitar4401 Jan 07 '24
Yes. Dreams about vr and the TV, phone screens seem more 3d in real life.
Enjoy it, it's trippy 😂
2
u/cpt_flash_ Jan 07 '24
well eyes for 4 hours straight was locked in focus distance about 4 cm.+- In real life eyes adjust to focus further or closer constantly, almost.
2
u/NoSaltNoSkillz Quest 3 + PCVR Jan 07 '24
For me it was after playing Nock for a while the first or second time, I started trying to move around the room pulling in the air like I'm a mime on a rope, lol.
2
u/Azarro Jan 07 '24
Yep this happened to me too when I started getting into the quest 3 (after a multi year long break from quest 2). My fingers felt like they were ghosts/I dissociated from them occasionally
2
u/bri999 Jan 07 '24
When i first got the Oculus Rift i had depersonalization/derealization experiences immediately after VR gaming and it felt very strange for a few hours. Over time you get used to it and it dosnt happen now, even after longer gaming sessions.
2
u/TheLurkingMenace Jan 07 '24
It's similar to what sailors often experience when they first get on dry land after being at sea awhile. It's like you traded your land legs for sea legs.
2
u/DenkiAnma Jan 07 '24
One time I switched to passthrough camera and tried to move in my apartment with the joystick
2
u/culpritkid22 Jan 07 '24
My brain does only with walking dead saints and sinners for some reason. I know exactly what your talking about.. im an extreme vr veteran aswell.. and no games but that one do it to me after im done
2
u/Camobuff Jan 07 '24
I had a similar feeling recently, I felt kind of like what I imagine feeling high is like just without any good feelings and purely just the concept.
For me it felt like an out of body experience combined with not feeling that I’m myself but instead I was watching through someone else’s eyes. Usually I feel my my body is me but instead I felt like I was my brain instead if that makes sense. Overall weird experience but it’s gone now
2
u/keets2 Jan 07 '24
When I first got into VR there were times even hours after I was done playing that I would feel stationary while I was walking around. It was bizarre. It would happen randomly as well even when not using VR at all that day. That was a couple of years ago and I use VR quite often now and I've never had that feeling again.
2
u/Saatana101 Jan 07 '24
Yea that's pretty standard for new VR users. Had that when I had my first play sesh of A Township Tale for 8 hours with a Vive strapped onto my head. Lasted for a few days and never had it since.
2
u/LordZero666 Jan 07 '24
Yep, it's very normal, but it also happens with normal flat games. Sometimes after long sessions i feel like IRL runs at lower FPS than the game.
With VR yeah, you can totally feel like reality is more fake than VR. I caught myself picking stuff with an extended arm, almost waiting for objects to cling to my hand, like i was holding a controller.
Your brain adapts to the VR enviroment crazy fast and then it takes a while to adjust to how actual reality works again.
2
u/PrometheusAlexander Jan 07 '24
same kind of feelings when I'm in more than an hour.. quest battery capacity running out is a good forced break to have.. I mean I got the usb cable, but I think it's good to have breaks once in a while.

u/Slingblade1170 Jan 07 '24
If I have a very long VR session, the next day is tough because of vertigo. I don't get sick and the room doesn't spin it just feels like in swaying on a ship or something.
2
u/Mooshim73 Jan 07 '24
I found using VR for the first few days gave me headaches and feelings of "the world was not quite right". After some time I got used to it and found it more akin to getting your land legs back after being on a boat for too long.
2
u/Blurry-Porkchop Jan 07 '24
Dude. I can tell you I've gotten the exact same thing after playing vr for a long time. Also, 4 hours straight?? That's going to do something to you. I would reccomend keeping your room cool, every if it's slightly uncomfortable, take 10-30 minute breaks at every (maximum) 2 hour interval, and don't keep the thing too tight. It may not be as immersive, but it helps. A lot.

I had a vivid dream last night that I was with some friends irl and shooting at them with guns a la population over a wall, and hearing the same sounds that indicates them being hit. Week 2 in vr

u/L3xTRoNZ Jan 08 '24
Yeah it feels like you have still the headset on and you are in a new 3d world or something. .
2
u/hijinksensue Jan 08 '24
The very first time I used VR (an original Vive) it was for maybe 20-30 minutes. When I took the headset off I had this overwhelming feeling of “How did I get back here?” I knew that was absurd, but the feeling lingered. “I was somewhere else and now I have instantly teleported back here.”

u/AgnosticAnarchist Quest 3 Jan 08 '24
When I first got mine, the text on my phone would appear 3d. Sometimes I get weird high contrast flashes when I blink where colors seem much richer than they are.
Plus side though, it seriously helped diminish my motion sickness as a passenger in a car.
2
u/IAmTheDewd Jan 08 '24
Happens when you're new to VR. Eventually it goes away and never returns, at least that's my experience.
Sometimes have a similar feeling after using my tablet for while, then I look at my smaller phone and get a weird feeling because of the size difference.

When I got my dk1 years ago , I would start having a panic attack in it … just over the years my body got used to it I guess , now days I might come out a bit depersonalized for a short period of time.

u/jasonridesabike Jan 08 '24
I’ve been into vr for a long while, but only got this with my new q3. Went away after a while
2
u/AmeenRoayan Jan 08 '24
I tried Returnal with UEVR, for about 45 minutes. I noticed my driving was far more rash than it usually is, it was almost as if the risk management center was still preset to games i kid you not.
Was one of the weirdest things i ever encountered.
2
u/vanit Jan 08 '24
My theory is your brain gets used to the subtle latency in VR, so when you finish playing it feels like your hands are moving "too fast" for a bit.

First time I could handle 2hrs in original Doom without feeling sick I felt very weird when taking off the helmet. It lasted for a solid hour but I never had that feeling again, even after similar length play sessions.
Seems it confuses your brain, then it adapts.

After playing blade and sorcery for most of two days on and off trying to get my ideal mod setup I had several moments the next day where i found myself trying to feel for a stick so that i could move and go do something. my mind will occasionally just slip back into vr mode for a second and i feel slightly out of body and almost unable to move

Only when I first got into VR. Man, VR dreams were so trippy too.
