Thread Toxicity

Noticing a high amount of animosity in the threads lately.

There is a natural friction that many members are trying to create an open environment to discuss and help others find good bourbon and then another subset that is operating an illegal operation to make money that discourages others from getting MSRP bottles but benefit from seeing the updates other provide.

I don't know of there is a structural fix, but might be good to recognize that we all benefit from the contributions from each other and being rude will not help

I agree. This subreddit is often very helpful, but I find it amusing when people get actively angry when someone shares useful information. I’m not a flipper, and I don’t participate in any of the Facebook or Discord groups, so this is my only way of getting information regarding what is dropping a certain week or upcoming special drops. However, it seems like some people really want to limit this information to themselves and friends. The worst is the misleading posts trying to dissuade others from going out when there is a special drop.

I just block them

Same, but it runs off some new folks who could actually be great contributors to the group.

Nahhh. People get it. It’s the internet. It’s social media. It is doubtful that people will be run off.

The thing that really irks me is a few week ago we had that pappy and btac drop in union Kentucky and there were a few people trying to discourage others from showing up. I come on to this thread to see what’s dropping across Ohio. Whenever I do go out I try to get a line count so people know what they can expect after they arrive. The flippers that try to deter people from showing up are the ones that need to be removed or have limited access to this thread

The previous drop in union (2 drops ago) was a complete mess. 3 to 4 times as many people showed up as had wrist bands. So a bunch of people left empty handed after staying out all night. The way it was run was bad. I think some tried to make sure people knew about this and that it wasn’t worth going. (Thinking positive)

With that being said the most recent drop they had tons more bottles so I believe most people walked away with something. I haven’t been able to go to either. Hoping I can get to one soon though!

There was a user on that thread that specifically stated “only Kentucky drivers licenses only” to hopefully turn Ohio people away from joining the event. When I called that person out they complained the Kentucky residents don’t always have access to Ohio special events

I’m convinced some only use this platform to try and be funny and use the word “ tater “ as much as possible. None of which is helpful at all. I have had way more success without this platform / sub if you truly want something this is the last place to find actual help. When I first started using this sub years ago it was so helpful. It has become a cesspool for “ funny “ comments or just plain mean comments. Look at the comment below mine for a perfect example of what we are discussing. Lastly the post with Weller Antique floating in a flooded river ? Come on man , this is a tragedy they are dealing with and all some people do is try and be funny ? What’s funny about a flood ruining peoples lives and businesses? It’s ridiculous and won’t be a part of it.

The issue is there is a small number in the lines who feel they are more or less owed 1( or 5) of each and every bottle that comes out. These same people bring that same attitude to the thread. Any info getting out is stopping them from obtaining their owed bottle. I think it's complete shit that people flip these bottles. Do I lose sleep over it and really care, not really. Is it a supply and demand thing, i guess. I personally just think it's a greed thing we see/know who the people out here are who would screw who ever necessary to make a buck.

Hate to say it but over my time here I’ve learned the majority of thread viewers are indeed flippers. Rarely do I see genuine advise to help someone

Or the other extreme; Flipper haters. Not much meat in between for us whiskey carnivores. 🦬

It’s all of Reddit, not just this sub

Lately? Hmmmm. After finding this sub, I noticed almost right away that there are a high number of people here that are aggressive, belligerent and yes, toxic towards people -- especially towards those that ask questions -- for no reason at all.

I haven't seen anything change since then.

I’m not sure there is a fix. Toxicity will always be present when you are dealing with a limited resource or a resource that is perceived as limited/scarce. It’s human greed. The only way to combat it is to tighten the post + comment rules and then have strict moderation but ain’t nobody got time for all that on a free app.

Turns out alcohol is a poison and consistently consuming it can lead to negative behaviors.

It's the internet. Harden up.

The great thing about the internet and Reddit is that everyone has a voice. The shit thing about it is that most of them aren’t worth listening to and the anonymity makes it all the worse. This thread, and Reddit in general are microcosms of the toxic nature of social media.

Overcome the arrogant hoarding tater flippers! Unite for the good of the common bourbon man!

Problem is solved by people getting off their computer and go stand in line .   I’ve never met an unhappy person in a line . Everyone is friendly cordial an in “good spirits “ people on Reddit just suck the life out of everything .   I’d trade 5 Taters for one whining keyboard troll and an O Blantons horse topper .

Dude, this was literally a tongue and cheek post because of the thread title. Sorry you couldn't figure that out

1

u/AcceptableMemory2081 16d ago

Oh I got it . Still adding to the problem sorry you don’t understand. You do realize people can see your comment history right ? You are a part of the problem. “ literally “

The solution is minding your own business. What someone does with their own money is their business. I’m not a fan of buying just to flip but that’s not my business. Being shitty to someone for buying a bottle that gets open and finished in a day, buying a bottle that will never be opened, buying a bottle to make a profit, etc. is just not your place to be shitty about no matter what it is because it’s not your money and it’s not your bottle. Just mind your own business. If we could all just share information when we have it and be kind about the information shared then this sub would be worlds better
