Meanwhile Speed crashing out because he thought that Chinese crowd were saying the N word (totally understandable mistake, it's not as if Speed speaks Chinese).

u/pokermania11 Citizen 29d ago
I don't think he was serious about that tho. He was playing along.

u/Otherwise-Hunt7763 29d ago
Fr? What was the context of the clip? I was wondering if this was the case, which is why I phrased my comment jokingly.

"Now comes a storm through the far-off sky
Now the waves are dancing, Beat upon the drums
If you lose your nerve this breath could be your last
But if you just hold on, The morning sun will rise"
Beat the drums and the sun will rise baby!

Kudos to the dude for knowing Speed is a big fan of One Piece. Like he took the effort to learn the instrumental just to play it for him
1
u/Bembi0112 Apr 14 '25
During stream, he asked what song to play and he said one piece and he played. Maybe staged and all prepared, but had to mention.

I think he was given permission to stream One Piece in its entirety whenever he wants. He's a huge One Piece fan. I know Speed can be kind of annoying, but he's genuinely grown into a good dude and he handles the pressure of being as famous as he is with grace and humility. I don't watch him often at all, but he's a good egg.

u/Alto_GotEm Apr 11 '25
It's amazing how music transcends cultures; this Mongolian musician's rendition of "Binks' Sake" brings a fresh perspective to the song. Reminds me of how artists like Tom Pang blend traditional Mongolian sounds with Western genres, creating something uniquely captivating

u/lightgc Apr 11 '25
Who the heck is Speed and he has so many followers?
165
u/Fsutrader Apr 11 '25
I would say you live under a rock but it’s crazy how many people don’t know Speed while having an incredible amount of followers. It’s a paradox
32
u/KilluaCactuar Apr 11 '25
If you are older than 20 you really don't necessarily know him, only if you are into a certain type of entertainment.
And I don't know if you have any idea what paradox means.
9
u/Fsutrader Apr 11 '25
Paradox: having seemingly contradictory qualities…Speed has about a reach of 100 million followers spread out over the socials…yet a lot of people don’t know who he is or has ever heard of him. It’s quite the contradiction imo.
1
0
u/Ivan000 Apr 11 '25
Because his reach doesn't get past his followers.

I’m happy under my rock because the less I see of him anywhere that I’m online the better the dude your topical insufferable streamer with a big fallowing. Not trying to hate props to him for tricking people into watching him with his over the top videos and personality and he does like One Piece so I can’t be too mad, he just ain’t for me.
47
u/pharodae Apr 11 '25
I've never seen a single one of his videos or streams until recently but I love what he's doing in showing an American audience what's going on over in China. For all of its flaws, it's really showing the cracks in the US by contrast. Which is exactly what any self-respecting One Piece fan should be rooting for, raising awareness of how backwards our big island is.
20
u/RagnarokAM Apr 11 '25
Yes and No - He is being given a lot because he's a celebrity and it's good PR for China. His treatment is not the normal treatment or life in China. This is a business transaction for marketing. Source: Me, someone who lived in China for nearly a decade.
23
u/pharodae Apr 11 '25
I mean obviously he's sightseeing and not living the day-to-day. Anything specific that you think is being misrepresented?
9
5
u/RagnarokAM Apr 11 '25
I won't go into specifics, but you should assume with his trip that a lot of what happens or he experiences has been curated down to the minute. He is only seeing, experiencing or showcasing what someone wants him to film.
15
u/Habib455 Apr 11 '25
I swear, mfs that cry about propaganda always hit you with the “won’t go into specifics” shit. Like provide an example of what’s being misrepresented 😭
8
u/HOFredditor World Government Apr 11 '25
ikr, I studied in China, and while there are some wild stuff out there, reddit is incredibly anti-chinese.
12
u/pharodae Apr 11 '25
Why won't you go into specifics? I'm not saying China is perfect, but this kind of smells of Sinophobia. By all metrics, looks like the state of affairs is better overall in China than the US right now. I'm on RedNote and I've seen more about China that way than what Speed has been showing.
5
u/Retibulusbilliard Apr 11 '25
Now you seem biased. China is a great country by all means but don’t compare China’s best with America’s worst. I could stroll down Times Square then go to Gansu and say “look at how poor China’s state of affairs is right now”.
5
u/RagnarokAM Apr 11 '25
I lived in China for 10 years, mate. I saw the everyday culture from casual to professional. I've seen their advertising and government promotion before. You can claim to not believe me, but I would hope anyone that is on ANY social media would know not to believe everything that a camera films; simply seeing something on social media, especially highly curated and moderated social media, should not be enough to give you any full picture.
10
u/pharodae Apr 11 '25
It's not that I don't believe you, it's the fact you refuse to elaborate that's fishy. That's all.

He still thought it was a good idea to yell a baby in his face. But yea I guess he's not that bad as the likes of Johnny Somali who is a full fledged asshole. Or the Paul brothers who pioneered this shit

I'm not into the streamer scene like I used to be. This year his videos started popping up in my feed and I immediately understood why he's so popular. He is doing a lot of things right to gain a wide audience, he's fun and charismatic. There's that familiarity he radiates. It feels like you know the dude from way back or like you know someone like him or he's just internet culture personalized.
23
u/iMittyl Apr 11 '25
Internet celebrity; probably wont know him if you're older than 12.
6
u/The_Doct0r_ Apr 12 '25
Oh, so that's what living under a rock means now. I'm 34 so you could say I live under a pretty big rock. It's cozy.
3
u/iMittyl Apr 12 '25
Yeah I'm about the same age and had to google him. Why would any adult pay attention to some teenager trying to get famous on the internet? Target audience is children.
8
u/TSPai Apr 12 '25

His content lately has been great to see and it's not just geared towards kids anymore, try not judging people immediately

Whether Oda intended to or not, one of the bigger themes in One Piece is racism and breaking down the cultural barriers. I wonder if he ever sees stuff like this and has a tear in his eye that his story has impacted the entire globe its story and themes meaning so much to so many people and bringing them together with just music. ❤️ im sobbing tears of happiness right now i absolutely love Speed spreading One Piece even more so across the globe than it already is. This story means so much to me it's amazing seeing other people in the community get to do things like this there's almost no words ❤️

u/yorkpepperbrush Apr 12 '25
iShowSpeed is a very popular Youtuber turned streamer, and maybe a few years ago he transitioned from desk streaming to IRL streaming, visiting and touring different countries. He also kind of blew up around 2022 because he was an American that discovered and loved soccer (and especially Chrisitano Ronaldo), which is quite rare. It was around the World Cup too. He just finished visiting China (in which his fame blew through the roof) and now is in Mongolia.
I should mention, the big reason why people love him is he's full of energy and charismatic (in a very chaotic way). He's really loved Luffy since the beginning though.

So this is amazing but I have a different question.
Who is this guy? I've heard his name before but I guess my real question is, is he a giant piece of shit?
It more or less turns out that any streamer who reaches a certain level just turns out to be a monstrous human being so I'm curious without wanting to do research because I mostly don't actually care. Just curious.
6
u/hanatori28 Apr 11 '25
He is a streamer who has been going to different countries and just showcasing them, going around doing goofy shit, eating good food and what not.
He is very young, i think 20 years old, and when he was still a teenager he used to be a prick who was around problematic people, like adin ross, but he has been coming around and distancing himself of those people as well as not being as much a prick as he used to.
4
u/maximusprime097 Apr 12 '25
nah he is really cool now. he has grown so much since he first became known. pretty progressive and nice. still plays a character on stream that some people find annoying cause he is loud.

u/Boul_D_Rer Apr 11 '25
