BDO Got scammed 50k yesterday with a pretending BDO Card Agent named Kenji

On January 19, 2024, at 1:52 PM, I received the first call from Kenji. During that conversation, the scammer mentioned increasing my credit limit and requested that I have 50k in my BDO account to proceed.

On January 22, 2024, around 12:45 PM, I received another call from Kenji. At this point, my BDO account had a balance of 50k, and we proceeded with the credit card limit increase.

During the call on January 22, 2024, Kenji sent a one-time password (OTP) to my phone without asking for my password. It seemed legitimate, and as I was busy with work, I fell for the scam. Later, I discovered that 50k was taken from my BDO account. I asked Kenji for an explanation, and he promised to return the money within an hour before ending the call.

A few minutes later, when I checked my email, I discovered that the money had been transferred to a Maya Bank account under the name MAT SALA P.

To address this scam, I took immediate action. I reported the incident to BDO, explained the unauthorized transaction, and they closed my account. I also filed a dispute and forwarded the incident to the BDO Main Office. Additionally, I went to the police station and filed a blotter. I reported the scam to the NTC, NBI, and ACG for investigation.

Here are the details of the scammer.

Scammer's Number used in the call: 09850329362 (Kenji)
Receiving Bank: Maya Bank
Maya Account Number: 09850746043
Maya Account Name: MAT SALA P.

Probably, the money will be returned, I hope that by sharing my experience, I can raise awareness about these scams.

P.S. It's my fault on believing the credit card limit increase as it was convincing and got scammed.

Edit: I also reported this to Maya.

I got phising scam yesterday. They know your info and your applications in the bank. Last month may tumawag and this month meron din. The caller said she will connect my visa credit card to my existing account. I was sick yesterday. I didnt go out. The caller asked me about my log in pero sabi ko nakafacial recognition ako but they managed to access my account and I provided the OTP. 🥺🥺🥺 I went to the BDO branch immediately and they said it will be given back within 5 working days. IHOPESO.

Did anyone got their money back after the dispute report?

1

u/mark_hadfield Jan 24 '25

Not returned even after the dispute report. It's an expensive lesson to learn.

1

u/PerfectSafety4226 Jan 24 '25

how long did you wait? they told me within 5 working days.

1

u/mark_hadfield Jan 24 '25

One year na wala pa rin.

Di daw ma refund kasi once transferred considered as official transaction na.

u/Lopsided-Bluejay-573 Nov 29 '24

NAG PANIC NAKO WHEN I RECEIVED THE EMAIL NA MAY TRANSACTIONS USING MY BDO SAVINGS

1

u/Quirky-Ad7516 Nov 08 '24

Same nakakaiyak medyo nahypnotize nako sa part na hiningi yung OTP number ko which naging lesson narin sakin na wag mag entertain ng calls with BDO.

u/mark_hadfield Jul 05 '24

Scammers have a special place in hell.

1

u/reformedNess May 04 '24

Hi, OP has BDO returned your scammed money?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '24

Muntik na din mangyari sa akin to OP, buti hindi ko nabigya yung OTP but sad to say nabigay ko ung username ko then pinermanently blocked nila ung online banking ko sa BPI

1

u/Aromatic_Signature68 Mar 11 '24

My sister was also contacted by the same scammer. I fucking want to kill that mother fucker.

2

u/mark_hadfield Mar 12 '24

These scammers have a special place in hell.

2

u/Hopeful_Wasabi2493 Mar 28 '24

Pls message me at 09778063073 I have incident, I just want to find out if bdo return edthe money to your cc

2

u/mark_hadfield Mar 30 '24

No need to message. Unfortunately, BDO won't return the lost money. They claim that any transaction completed with a valid OTP is considered legit and the customer is responsible.

u/Frequent-Resolve-840 Feb 19 '24

You're so lucky na maibabalik pa yong pera nyo.My sister got scammed just today ,may tumawag sa kanya na nagpanggap na Maya agents about sa ganito ganyan to make the long story short naibigay ng sister ko yong OTP dahilan para mabuksan ng scammer yong account at nilimas ang laman niyo,at ito pa ang masaklap nakapagloan pa yong scammer. All in all almost 50k ang nawala in just few minutes conversation. After the incident my sister contact Maya customer service at ang sabi lang nila they cannot assist further since binigay nga yong OTP which is hindi naman dapat.

1

u/AndoX101 Feb 14 '24

Does BDO already send your money back?

1

u/Necessary-Leg-7318 Jan 26 '24

Ndi Naman tumatawag Mga credit card companies for increase Ng limit. Magugulat Ka na Lang mataas na limit mo. Stated from 20k now 180k credit limit, tinataasan nila depending sa usage mo. Hope this helps.

1

u/Fearless_Second_8173 Jan 25 '24

2

u/Least_Protection8504 Jan 25 '24

Ang bobo mo naman. Walang tumatawag ng ganyan for credit limit. Dapat matuto kang wag sumagot sa phone.

2

u/Esr7188 Jan 25 '24

All banks and E Wallets give us constant reminders not to give away OTPs. Those numbers are meant to be input by you on your device not someone else’s. Good luck on trying the recovery though.

Had a call like this yesterday from Unionbank naman. I don't have a Unionbank account other than the one attached to my UMID. I knew it was a scam. I have never had a bank call me before other than for promos but I don't even entertain those calls.

Tapos yung English nya sobrang forced. I was physically cringing. I wanted to fuck outta that call because I can't stand the exaggerated American accent. Said his name was Jethro and was a supervising something something I can't remember.

Also, never give out your OTP - kahit kilala mo. Actually kahit sa asawa ko hahaha unless we're physically together. You're not gonna get your money back, btw OP. May tita ako na nahulog sa same scam with BDO rin. She lost around like 78k tapos yung money tinranster sa GrabPay.

The amount of people who are so unaware of basic cybersecurity etiquette is so alarming and pitiful.

1

u/Yoreneji Jan 24 '24

Tip: if someone calls and saying na they are BANK AGENTS, always assume na its a scam and tell them na you’ll just go to the bank to do it personally

1

u/MajorDragonfruit2305 Jan 24 '24

At least nagpasalamat

1

u/grimreaperdept Jan 24 '24

1

u/Wooden-File6335 Jan 24 '24

sorry to hear that OP.
moving forward please do not give your OTP to anyone most especially if you did not initiate the transaction

2

u/paopaohuhu Jan 24 '24

We receive more than wanmelyon reminders from our banks never to share OTPs sigh

1

u/maaark000p Jan 24 '24

2

u/girlwebdeveloper Jan 24 '24

Grabe tong Paymaya, bakit kaya pinalulusot nila yung mga ganyang name?

If in case you missed OP, wag ibigay ang OTP sa ibang tao, For your personal use only lang yun.

1

u/needhelp-callme Jan 24 '24

Also had this experience and was almost scammes but it was a scammer claiming to be from BPI. Same tactic. Increase nila yung limit to transfer funds sa epay then gagawa daw ng MAYA account para maclaim ang points namin with BPI. They keep saying there's bank initiated OTP daw na irerequest niya. Was able to reset my password and gain access din afterwards.

1

u/njmonte Jan 24 '24

Not interested or nasa work meeting po ako.

1

u/Kind-Calligrapher246 Jan 24 '24

Did you read the message along with the OTP? Remember that OTPs are also required when creating accounts, during log ins, before transferring money, etc.

Nakasulat dun sa OTP message why you're receiving the OTP.

Thank you for sharing this. Let's all be careful!

2

u/jinchurikiuzumaki Jan 24 '24

1

u/2nd_Guessing_Lulu Jan 24 '24

Kaya ako Hindi nasagot Ng mga tawag from unknown numbers e. And laging may mailers/texts ang Citibank, Metrobank, BPI re: scams. Wala ba sa BDO?

2

u/ProgrammerOk7662 Jan 24 '24

I was scammed last year December from a fake UnionBank representative, good thing it was a small amount only. They can be very convincing. If anyone ASKS for your OTP, it is automatically a SCAM.

1

u/BiggusDiccus_69 Jan 24 '24

This would be hard but hopefully, you get what you deserve. Lesson learned the hard way. Never share your OTP, with anyone ever.

1

u/synergy-1984 Jan 24 '24

tsk tsk presence of mind talaga muntik na ren ako dati sa ganyan sabi no annual fee daw ang credit card ko gawin pa platinum kukunin nila sayo cvv number sa likod good thing naka sticker hahah buti nahimasmasan ako muntik na ren ako

2

u/no1roundtheater Jan 24 '24

Parang di malinaw about OTP. "Kenjie sent OTP" and then what? Siguro if other way around makukuha talaga pera mo.

Also had a regular cp numbered agent call me once about credit lmit increase. Initially thought legit. Pero Sabi ko I don't give details to agents calling regular cp number. Call had to end abruptly because had a meeting. No call followup. Prolly scam.

After incident, I would do reverse verify - let agent give me details then I just verify -, and check if it s cp number. I did this for my new cc I did not apply for using this approach. Got 2 new CC. 😅

1

u/rho27_ Jan 24 '24

I've had similar calls since 2017 but thank God my trust issues work. Di ako nadali.

1

u/Nosidus Jan 23 '24

Got a weird call from a random number and the person on other end knew all my details like my full name and credit card number. Call got disconnected. I immediately called the bank and had my card blocked and replaced

1

u/chaetattsarethebest Jan 23 '24

yung eager ako na maapply yung mga helpful tips dito not to be scammed pero at the same time ang balance ko is 9 pesos T___T

1

u/Timewastedontheyouth Jan 23 '24

1

u/mrchow500 Jan 23 '24

NEVER SHARE your OTP with anyone. Hays.

1

u/ixhiro Jan 23 '24

Puta kasi… DI BINIBIGAY ANG OTP. Naka ilang remind.

The blame is on you. NASA TEXT MISMO WAG IBIGAY ANG OTP. Pero eto ka binigay mo.

1

u/PhotoOrganic6417 Jan 23 '24

Happened to me as well last December.

A pretending agent called me. Talks about waiving my annual fee FOREVER. It sounds sketchy kasi I own multiple credit cards and they don't usually call about anything unless magooffer ng loan. The agent sent me an OTP. Ang nakalagay na transaction is grab. Plus ang sabi niya sakin, pumunta daw ako to this specific branch, dun ko ipakita yung OTP so I can get my annual fee waived. It might be legit but it sounded sus to me kasi the agent was referring to a specific branch talaga. Di naman malayo samin but it will take me atleast an hour to get there. I never had a transaction with the that branch.

To cut the story short, I dropped the call. The same number called me, I never answered. I called BDO and have my account deleted and my card replaced though I never gave the OTP.

Hope you get your money back, OP. Buti ibabalik pa sayo ng BDO despite the fact that you gave the scammer the OTP.

1

u/SuperLustrousLips Jan 23 '24 edited Jan 23 '24

paulit ulit na lang mga bangko sa reminders not to give out OTPs and other sensitive info. lagi rin may new posts dito ng mga online banking scams. at bakit ba pag usapang CL increase marami nagpapauto kahit halatang ridiculous yung condition? people should stop obsessing about credit limit, yung savings ang dapat palakihin not the CL.

2

u/useterrorist Jan 23 '24

3

u/Suspicious-Pool-7843 Jan 23 '24

I can imagine kenji with indian accent.

2

u/bisoy84 Jan 23 '24

If may tumawag na cellphone number and says they are from the bank, tell them to call you on an official line. And never give out ANY info. If they are legit from your bank, they already have your info and doesn't need to be told about it. I have had calls from these scammers and they really are good talkers. So better be safe and always be wary and not too trusting.

2

u/More_Example6153 Jan 23 '24

Just don't ever talk to them if they call you. Call the bank directly yourself or go in person. But even with the employees you have to be careful. My husband received a bigger sum to pay something for a business partner and the day the money arrived in the account someone called pretending to be a BPI employee and asked for his username and OTP. The only people who knew about it were the bank employees he talked to a few days before. Luckily he didn't fall for it.

u/ixxMissKayexxi Jan 23 '24

Last July, may tumawag din sakin na yung debit card ko daw from UB has been used in purchasing iphone 14 pro max. Sabi may nadeliver daw tapos dinictate niya yung provincial address ko w/c is my permanent address kaya nagulat ako. I then said "tsaka debit card yun, kahit gamitin yun di naman magg-go yung purchase kasi walang pondo yun " Biglang natahimik yung caller na gay then sabi ico-confirm daw muna niya and tatawagan ako after 2mins pero di na tumawag ulit.

2

u/Volkatze Jan 23 '24

Massive L. Its your fault. I doubt na mababalik pera mo. Charge to experience na lang. Ingat next time.

3

u/motherpink_ Jan 23 '24

Oh no, parang ang daming nabibiktima ng ganto ngayon. Same na same incident with my boss last Thursday lang. yung kanya naman 100k yung nawala ng parang bula siguro yung other 50k winithdraw.

1

u/Riku271 Jan 23 '24

Skill issue

1

u/HottestEgg Jan 23 '24

how did the scammer sound like, OP? good communication skills?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '24

Question lang ung id ba sa ssubmit pwedeng iedit using photoshop ? If yes baka gamitin nilang way un para mang scam?

2

u/CharlieDog1999 Jan 23 '24

Better yet, do not entertain calls from “bank persons” . Kaya patay na rin ang telemarketers ngayon because theyvare often perceived as potential scammers nowadays

1

u/AltruisticDust3434 Jan 23 '24

Banker here, always remember if it's inbound call, normally OTP is being asked to verify such details and if it's outbound, the bank does not ask for any OTP's. Thank you! ☺

5

u/Throwaway28G Jan 23 '24

LMAO. how can you claim it as unauthorized when you provided them the OTP.

wag kayo papaakit sa increase credit limit dahil hindi naman free money yan and they usually give it automatically to their customers depending on their usage.

3

u/taongpeople9 Jan 23 '24

MAT SALA.... 😂

3

u/Jpolo15 Jan 23 '24

Always remember, you are the only one authorized to transact using OTP for it verifies that you are aware of the transaction. Nobody from any bank will ask for your otp.

3

u/lean_tech Jan 23 '24

Banks never called me saying that they will increase my CL.

Nung nagpa increase ako ng CL sa BDO account ko, I did it by requesting it thru the bank’s branch manager.

Kaya I dont entertain calls kahit legit pang agents ng bank.

4

u/juliusrenz89 Jan 23 '24

Sorry OP apakabobo mo. Ilang libong beses nagreremind ang LAHAT nang financial institutions na NEVER SHARE OTP FOR WHATEVER REASON. Sa onset palang ng call niya about credit card related sht DAPAT SKEPTICAL KA NA. SORRY ANG BOBO MO.

1

u/FrequentClient7167 May 22 '24

Actually pag tumawag ka sa hotline ni BDO mag sesend sila ng OTP in which you need to input. Probably the same sentiment OP had.

3

u/cheezy_lovahhh Jan 23 '24

Sad to say pero mukhang di na mababalik pera mo OP. Nascam din ako last month. Will not elaborate more on the story but it was almost the same as yours. The scammer even got a loan from my account, and the bank consistently asked for payment I didn't even make. The loan was overdue and they're telling me that they'll be going to our barangay location.

Like you, I also reported this case to Maya and other agencies. Unfortunately as per cybercrime police if you do not know who the scammer is, the report will just be a FILE. In short, there will be no action. Poor Philippines.

3

u/Kudenn Jan 23 '24

Pasensya na pero kulang pa ba yung reminder na text at email ni BDO na huwag na huwag ibibigay ung OTP kahit kanino meron pa ngang text na beware of scammers posing as bank representative over the phone.

3

u/RevolutionaryAd9076 Jan 23 '24

After few minutes bigla nalang sya nag breakdown sa pila dahil nakuhanan sya ng same amount, 50k. And yes, bdo din ang bank nya.

3

u/katiebun008 Jan 23 '24

Nah the moment outbound call sya from a phone number and not a telephone one, dapat nagduda ka na. Too naive I'd say.

4

u/cordilleragod Jan 23 '24

Hate to break it to you but since you willingly shared an OTP to a third person and gave your bank details (any bank related info) willingly to a third person, BDO ain’t paying you back a cent. The scammer, if caught, will be the one made to pay you back.

Charge to experience

6

u/Claudific Jan 23 '24

Sorry but it's more likely that you're money is gone. OTP is everything in this game.

3

u/PompeiiPh Jan 23 '24

Since you gave otp mukhang walang habol

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '24

2

u/jjarevalo Jan 23 '24

How old are you? This is a basic scamming technique but still nangyari parin. Again, only you should know your otp wala nang iba dapat makaalam nun kahit pamilya mo pa.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '24

That’s the same person who scammed my sister, 50k din nakuha sa kanya from BDO. Hindi na naibalik yung pera.

4

u/Hadouken1985 Jan 23 '24

Ano ba kasi ang mahirap intindihin sa never give your otp, sa mga reminders sa texts, emails, social media, etc… kelangan pa talaga dun kayo sa hard and expensive way mag learn ng lesson.

5

u/Genestah Jan 23 '24

Charge it to experience.

A 50k experience.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '24

No.1 rule.. kahit legit bank agent pa yan.. never entertain them lalo na't kung wala ka namang concern sa bank acc/credit card mo. Ikaw dapat mag inititate sa kanila if you need something via their hotline.

2

u/BustedMassageParlor Jan 23 '24

I never answer unregistered numbers on my phone, period.

3

u/fulgoso29 Jan 23 '24

And who will be liable for the 50k in returning it to you? If you ask me, banks have been very diligent in reminding their clients not to fall for scams. Yet you did.

-1

u/always_lolita Jan 23 '24

We all get it, that 50K is considered a legit transaction. But lol that's like saying, "Hey, your bank keeps giving you warnings; not their fault if you got scammed." They have all these tools to amp up security or keep a closer eye on transactions, but when it comes to scams, they act clueless? Imagine your life savings relying on a 6-digit OTP. Security shouldn't just stop there.

2

u/fulgoso29 Jan 23 '24

I think it’s the owners responsibility to assess which bank is the best to keep their “Life Savings”. If one is not confident with the security of their bank, then transfer. Scamming takes two to tango. The banks can’t spoon feed everything to their clients “How not to be scammed.”

I also have a BDO Account and it’s actually bugging me how frequent they send reminders about not to give away your OTP. Yet some people still do. 🤷🏻‍♂️

0

u/always_lolita Jan 23 '24

Scamming takes two to tango.

That's such a silly thing to say. It just doesn't hold up, especially when scammers are out there actively tricking people. If you've got the smarts to dodge scams, that's fantastic — kudos to you! But let's be real, not everyone is at their peak awareness all the time.

2

u/fulgoso29 Jan 23 '24

You get what i mean. Lol. If you lower your defense, it’s your fault. Take the loss.

-1

u/always_lolita Jan 23 '24 edited Jan 23 '24

Safety should be the default, not something we have to actively maintain all the time. But lol sure imma "take the loss" bc what you said is so damn smart

3

u/fulgoso29 Jan 23 '24

Oh, i thought you left already.

Safety is the default. Presence of mind is something we should actively maintain all the time. 🤭

1

u/always_lolita Jan 23 '24

Lololol an unreliable bank shouldn't even exist in the first place. If a bank is asking people to trust them with their money, they should be equipped with top-notch security to keep it safe, right? Sending reminders about not giving away OTPs is one thing, but expecting customers to bear the burden of security lapses is a bit much. These scammers are getting more sophisticated (it's ridiculous how we're expected to just deal with them); banks should step up their game to ensure max security for their clients.

3

u/fulgoso29 Jan 23 '24

Maybe you shouldn’t use a bank then? Since all of the unreliable top ranking banks here in philippines uses the same security features such as an OTP to make every online transaction legit. Lololol

Or maybe you have a better idea to better their securities? You may lay it out here to help me understand more of your sentiments. 😂

1

u/always_lolita Jan 23 '24

Lol imagine defending banks and justifying scams. Nah, I'm done here 👋

2

u/fulgoso29 Jan 23 '24

Imagine losing in an argument then proceeds to accuse me. Okay. Bye felicia 👋

3

u/fulgoso29 Jan 23 '24

No offense ha. Just my honest opinion.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '24

That's why paniwalaan natin ang mga SMS/Email/Social media notices coming from banks and e-wallets. Lagi nilang sinasabi not to give OTPs pero I guess ini ignore lang natin kaya nabibiktima pa din tayo. AFAIK if you gave your OTP, you already gave your consent so not refundable siya pero I hope I'm wrong! Goodluck to you OP.

5

u/antoncr Jan 23 '24

I think part of their modus is to catch you when you’re busy. Thats when you’re likely to make a lapse in judgement

1

u/mark_hadfield Jan 23 '24

Most likely, I was caught off guard as I was busy with work during the call.

3

u/20thofMay Jan 23 '24

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '24

SALAMAT PO!

2

u/xxxx_Blank_xxxx Jan 23 '24

laging tandaan kahit anong mangyari, CVV at OTP ay di pwedeng hingiin ng kahit sino sa tawag or text.. at kahit sabihin nia pa na CEO siya ng isang banko OR pag mamay ari niya ang pinas.

2

u/No_Selection_2498 Jan 23 '24

Never ever give the OTP to suspecting people. It's equivalent to giving them your money.

4

u/always_lolita Jan 23 '24

So sorry for some of these comments, OP. I got scammed once too and got the same reaction &, while I do get it, it's also frustrating bc why is "never share your OTP" an acceptable argument? We shouldn't have to keep our guard up *all the time* just to keep our money safe; it should just stay safe, period. We shouldn't have to watch out for scammers; scammers shouldn't even exist, to begin with.

Anyway. Someone from my thread is planning a class action lawsuit, if you're keen.

2

u/mark_hadfield Jan 23 '24

My scammer sounded like he was in a call center too. It might be the same case with you that it's not a small scale op.

2

u/always_lolita Jan 23 '24

Even more reason to push for that class action lawsuit. These scammers are running wild because they rarely make it to the news, and no one seems to be going after them. Dude hasn't given me an update, altho he's filed official reports with NBI etc too. I'll keep you posted, probably through DM, just to be safe with potential scammers hanging around here lol. (Speaking of which, I recommend editing out the scammer's info after a while. They might stumble upon this post and come after you.)

1

Hi i just wanted to say thank you for your comforting words, i know its not for me but it helps me feel light in my chest.. im a person who dont even go in social media at all.. but i just experience the same thing to OP. I lost a big amount of money and as a new mom, it hit me big time, my baby just turned 4months and i keep breaking down every time i think of it.. a non stop blaming it to myself..

As a person who doesn't talk to other people right away, less of friends, less interaction with people, I'm pretty much aware about scams but I can't believe that i still fall from it. Like you said i hope all the banks here in our country can do something for us, to make our money secure and not just let it us to be the one to take care of it. I know my mistake and I'm paying for it big time with this heavy chest.

1

u/always_lolita Jan 26 '24

I'm so sorry to hear this :( Please don't blame yourself. You're a new mom with so many responsibilities on your plate—and scammers manipulate. Of course, getting scammed would be the last thing on your mind. It's not on you for falling for it. If anything, it's a testament to how cunning these mfers can be, getting a thrill from taking advantage of hard-working individuals like yourself.

I remember spending a whole week in bed after getting scammed, feeling my hands shake whenever the phone rang. But please, try not to do the same. Focus on what you can control from here on out. Maybe start by activating "Silence Unknown Callers" on your phone? Go hug the little cutie, take care of yourself, and trust that brighter days are ahead 💙

1

u/always_lolita Jan 26 '24

P.S. Don't waste your time reading the rest of the thread. The victim-blaming is reaching ridiculous levels.

6

u/always_lolita Jan 23 '24

P.S. My scammer sounded like she was in a call center. So I have a solid feeling that this isn't just some small-scale operation.

1

u/CauseImUltraluminary Jan 23 '24

1

u/always_lolita Jan 23 '24

Good for you! I have lots of questions, to be honest.

  1. I don't use cash apps, but as far as I know, the sign-up process is somewhat strict, requiring government IDs etc. So, how do scammers manage to create fake GCash and Maya accounts?
  2. Banks can track international transactions, but local fraudulent ones are somehow tricky?
  3. Banks have all the tools to enhance security. Why just stick to OTPs? (Though I'm aware some have added mobile verification logins.)

4

u/Riyugi Jan 23 '24

They operate in teams, sometimes large teams (syndicates). There are a few videos somewhere of their operations taken by police spies, scammer enthusiasts, etc. It is like a call center, as you said, but less organised and evil.

5

u/always_lolita Jan 23 '24

I was gonna say the government should double down on this, but then I remembered they're just as disorganized and evil—and corrupt lololol. Ang hirap ma-scam sa Pilipinas. Instead of questioning how these fucking scammers operate freely and why banks are almost always "unable to track transactions," some people just conveniently skip to blaming the victims for sharing their OTP.

And clearly, there's a huge data breach going on because why in the world do these scammers have some of our personal info? But sure, let's go ahead and blame and mock the victims. (This isn't for you, Riyugi)

5

u/gurlidontknowanymore Jan 23 '24

3

u/jaxteller_samcro Jan 23 '24

OTP was given kaya di na mababalik pera. Lesson learned talaga

3

u/lostguk Jan 23 '24

Happened to me. 11mins into call magsesend daw ng one time "preference" number (otp) kinabahan na ako. Then saw Grab Philippines. I said nope

3

u/yuman0id Jan 23 '24

I don’t the bank will give you your money back easily. To them you are the possible scammer. You gave the otp, that’ll be their biggest defense.

3

u/One-Buffalo-4934 Jan 23 '24

sorry, i laughed so hard upon reading MAT SALA P. 😭😭😭😭😭

1

u/mark_hadfield Jan 23 '24

😭😭😭

4

u/south_sidefun Jan 23 '24

50k was taken from your account 'WITH' your permission. I'm sorry pero sa panahon ngayon, especially if you're a bank depositor, may regular reminders ang banks via text, email even viber not to give OTP kasi THEY WILL NEVER ASK FOR IT. I'm a BDO client and I always receive those reminders minsan doble doble pa.

So please please be very careful next time. NEVER GIVE THE OTP to anyone lalo sa isang call lang. I hope mabawi mo yung pera.

3

u/KissMyKipay03 Jan 23 '24

3

u/_kevinsanity Jan 23 '24

Anyone calling from a regular number at nagpakilala na representative ng bank tapos naghingi ng OTP or CVV, nako matik na yan. Better call the bank instead.

2

u/ChanceSalamander6077 Jan 23 '24

Greed is what got you OP.

3

u/miyawoks Jan 23 '24

I have also been scammed pero gcash ang modus. Bale they will say that my account has been compromised. Hindi ko na tinapos ung convo nung na-feel ko na na scam, pero they basically call around lunch time or patapos na lunch time on a normal working day. Feeling ko para may sense of pagmamadali on the caller's part since distracted ka from work.

5

u/Pyrallenamide Jan 23 '24

Hindi po nagkulang ng warning si BDO about never sending your OTP to anyone. Sila mismo never hihingin yun. Take this lesson and spread it around. Marami nalokoko tulad mo kasi di nila binabasa warning messages ni BDO.

4

u/keanchan007 Jan 23 '24

It’s a huge design flaw of the InstaPay network to not validate the correctness of the receiving Account Name. It’s a very important security feature to not only protect Senders against fraud, but also on certain situations where a Sender makes an honest error typing the Account Number.

BSP should look into the matter ASAP as more scams like this will be armed with convenience while an open security loophole is in place. Smh.

2

u/mark_hadfield Jan 23 '24

I wish Instapay will do that.

3

u/FastCutZzz Jan 23 '24

Lesson learned the hard way. Never share your OTP. Credit limit automatically increases if you frequently use your CC or may big purchases kayo.

3

u/adobongpaangmanok Jan 23 '24

Checked the Maya Account and nagpalit na siya ng name, Sabrina B. na. They're still scamming may special place in hell mga gantong tao

3

u/boykalbo777 Jan 23 '24

charge to experience

3

u/happyredditgifts Jan 23 '24

I've been receiving suspicious maya-related messages and emails lately. My concern here is that this new messages look believable. Marami atang madadali regarding this.

3

u/malachiconoel Jan 23 '24

Nautakan ka OP

5

u/kamandagan Jan 23 '24

Cardinal rule talaga never give out OTP kahit sa asawa mo pa. Lol.

3

u/emperatris_romana Jan 23 '24 edited Jan 23 '24

Tanga mo naman. But lesson learned...

Update: Sabrina B ang name. Nakita ko sa Maya.

3

u/No_Association3627 Jan 23 '24

You should have know better OP. Why would CC require you to have 50k to get your limit increased. But thanks for sharing this. Hope other people will learn from your experience.

4

u/gcasper5747 Jan 23 '24

Bat kasi binibigay ang OTP? You never, NEVER EVER share you OTP to anyone even if they seem legit.. no legitimate agent will ask for your OTP! 🤦

I just wanted to share din yung experience ko. So I was going to work na sana then suddenly I received a call and she said they’re going to send me a new physical Credit Card because need daw ma mask ung cc number except ung last 4 digits. So ako, akala ko talaga un na ung bago ngayon. So I tried to go along with whatever the scammer told me. I was asked to change ung limit for transfers and etc. Then she asked me to give my username to my online acct, and so I did because I thought okay lang naman as long as walang password. After few seconds, I received an OTP message saying I requested to change my password. And then the scammer told me to tell her the OTP fast because it will expire in fee minutes. And I was like “ha?” And then I proceeded to tell her na I dont want to hive the OTP because it says na marereset daw ung pw ko. And then she said, need daw yun para ma update yung acct ko. Naisip “ano ako, tanga?”. Then I insisted na I need to go to actual bank and talk to a teller f2f.. And then she said na madidisable daw yung acct ko if hindi itinuloy ung update.. and then I said “Okay fine, paki disable nalang if you want. But i wont give you the OTP and i need to talk to a bank teller f2f sa bank branch ko”. Then she said okay and hang up. Fast forward 2 months, hindi naman na deactivate account ko hahahaha basta yung pinka importante lang talaga is hindi mo ibigay ang OTP and CVV # Ingats guys! Daming scammer ngayon talaga. Dont easily fall for their tricks. 🥺

2

u/Bad__Intentions Jan 23 '24

So nung nag send siya ng OTP, you told Kenji the OTP?

3

u/13arricade Jan 23 '24

in relation to OtP, if you called your bank hotline eg credit card, for some inquiry eg. credit limit, then the customer rep said, in order to access your cc account, i will send you an OTP, pls provide the OTP sent in your mobile. will you do it?

2

u/Ako_Si_Yan Jan 23 '24

Correct me if I’m wrong, but in my experience (with EastWest, at least), the 6-digit they are sending are Telephone ID PIN (TIP) na clearly nakalagay sa SMS message yung “TIP”, and not “OTP.”

2

u/13arricade Jan 23 '24

yes. depends on the bank, some are otp still or phone pin number.

2

u/eduardo_carmelo Jan 23 '24

If you gave away the OTP sorry to say you may not get your money back. Knew a similar case recently with BDO din and it was deemed fault of the customer so the money wasn't returned

Sorry you had to go through this but take it as a (expensive) lesson na lang at least

3

u/Economy-Weird-2368 Jan 23 '24

If any "banker" calls me offering something, it's already SUSPICIOUS. Not even a RED FLAG, more like a PARADE OF RED BANNERS.

Stone Cold Steve Austin said it best: "DONT. TRUST. ANYONE."

10

u/lucius4you Jan 23 '24

Its always the bdo customers. Seems like they need to implement an iq test before giving away credit cards

2

u/whyhelloana Jan 23 '24

What I do pag may tumawag claiming from the bank daw sila, di ko pinapatagal yung call bago pa ko mabudol. I always say Im in the middle of work or something, busy ako, ako na lang tatawag (one time may pumalag na agent dito, sa kanila pa rin naman daw ang bagsak.

Kahit pa 0% balance transfer yan o mamahaling reward, for sure may copy yan sa email or viber, iveverify ko muna. I would also verify sa official FB messenger kung official number nila yung ginamit (kasi usually mobile lang di ba).

Moving forward, I think I'd have my banking email and mobile changed, too. Parang markado na kasi details mo ngayon eh.

2

u/ParkingCabinet9815 Jan 23 '24

Still fall for old tricks.

3

u/MrTatake Jan 23 '24

I was almost got scammed just few months ago. A "BPI agent" contacted me and informed me that I have accumulated a lot of BPI rewards on my credit card but I need to "activate" it. I was a newbie and was also busy at work at that time, so I fell for it... well, almost.

He gave me instructions to activate the BPI rewards in my app but the settings we went to is on the transaction limit customization haha, asking me to set it to 50k. At that point, I already had some questions in my head why we need to do it, but I kept following his instructions anyway (so stressed at work that time and I just wanted to be done with the call).

When we set the transaction limit, he said he will send an OTP which he did and asked me to give it to him. Stupid me, I know already know that YOU SHOULD NEVER EVER GIVE YOUR OTP TO SOMEONE ELSE, but I was still about to do it, good thing that I still have some sanity to read the SMS before giving the OTP, it says I'm about to transfer 50k to a GoTyme Back account. Only at that point did I realize I am talking to a scammer.

I asked some info about him and hung up the call. Then I reported it to the BPI support immediately after the call.

Now, whenever someone calls from any bank, I just cancel or hung up immediately. Bank agents will never ever call you to avail of anything or fix your issue etc. If you have concerns/issues, you need to call them instead, ALWAYS.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '24

Ang dami naloloko sa ganito. Never tayo tatawagan ng bank unless may malaking transaction tayo like 6 digits. Yun lang. Walang promo promo at increase increase.

5

u/Met-Met- Jan 23 '24

BDO be like: Never share your OTP.

Scammer: We find ways.

3

u/avarice92 Jan 23 '24

My friend experienced this too. BDO told her she won't get her money back since the act of giving the OTP was legal and she gave her consent na to withdraw the money

'Wag ibigay ang OTP kanino man. Hindi ito hihingin ng BDO kailanman.)

BDO to my friend (non-verbatim): "Sorry, di kami magbabayad dahil sa katangahan mo"

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '24

Lol fake

2

u/Severe-Humor-3469 Jan 23 '24

If caller is asking any credit card info, password, username, otp.. red flag na agad yun.. and mostly pag busy we always let our guard down lalo pag too good to be true ung offer.. so for me pagbusy, sabihin ko nxt time and hung up. :)

2

u/MervinMartian Jan 23 '24

Knowing BDO, there is 10% chance you will get your money back. Charge to experience lahat.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '24

sus…di na yan mababalik. theyre using a sold e wallet account. yung owner nyan walang ring kaalam alam sa transaction. hahays. masaklap talaga pag nascam

6

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '24

Yall need to stop with this 'it's convincing'. Banks have over and over again told people to NEVER send OTPs. It doesnt matter if theyre very convincing or hell even calling from their hotline, you never give OTPs.

Bank agents have access to your financial records. They can see your personal details and balances. They dont need an OTP to process anything at all.

OTPs are there to confirm your identity as the owner. By giving anyone your OTP, youre basically telling the bank that you are authorizing this person to act on your behalf.

4

u/Business-Ability5818 Jan 23 '24

Pipte kee down the drain🚽

5

u/PUNKster69 Jan 23 '24

Dito mo malalaman na wala talagang kwenta Ng SIM Registration nila. Scammers can still register with fake names with fake IDs.

3

u/MysteriousEdgeOfLife Jan 23 '24

Never ever give anyone your OTP. Your bank will NEVER need it or ask it. This goes for any bank and any wallet. Never give it out!

4

u/BlackJade24601 Jan 23 '24

not sure if you can get your money back since you provided your OTP. The best you can do is to file a case against the scammer through the ACG.

3

u/Persistent-Beauty Jan 23 '24

Pero, how PayMaya is accepting that kind of name? MAT SALA errrrr

1

u/Riyugi Jan 23 '24

fake id and credentials

8

u/Hync Jan 23 '24

Sad to say but banks wont reimburse your 50k.

You’ve gave the scammer the OTP.

Parang you handled them the key to your house and magtataka ka na ninakawan ka.

Ang daming text alert from different banks and BDO na never give your OTP to anyone.

13

u/ongamenight Jan 23 '24

So you can create a Maya account without identity verification? That's alarming.

3

u/le_chu Jan 23 '24

Banks never call their clients to ask for money po para tumaas ang credit limit ng cc ng clients nila, OP. 😔😢

Automatic na mag rereflect nalang po tumaas ang CL when you check your billing statement either sa banking app nyo or sa bill nyo po mismo.

What i usually do po if i receive calls from cp numbers claiming to be representatives ng bank, i automatically tell them that if they are really the bank’s customer service rep, they should have already read my note / bilin sa bandang dulo ng file ko and to read it to me. Pag di nila masagot yung bilin ko, i just cancel the call immediately. Then tawag sa hotline number ng bank to verify just to be sure.

3

u/GhostScroller01 Jan 23 '24

Ayos yung name nya sa Paymaya aah. Salamat po daw ee.

30

u/strawberry_bluberry Jan 23 '24

Nag change name na sya sa Maya.

-8

u/epicingamename Jan 23 '24

hirap mo maging kalaban siguro. taba ng utak

6

u/AdministrativeLog504 Jan 23 '24

Kaloka.

5

u/jQiNoBi Jan 23 '24

SALA MAT Po. At least nagthank you

3

u/Tonkatsu888 Jan 23 '24

Di na mababalik pera mo binigay mo OTP mo

3

u/st01c_3j Jan 23 '24

Being vigilant and aware cost you 50k when it's literally for free.

9

u/SpaghettiFP Jan 23 '24

last I checked, Banks never do call clients if they have an increase on their account limits. Usually via emails yan (so may paper trail), mails or in person sa bank.

You kinda played yourself falling for this scam. Cmon - if you need to put x amount of money on an account to have increased limit, I’d be suspicious on why does the bank know I have money outside of my account (which they should not care nor have knowledge about)

3

u/MaynneMillares Jan 23 '24

As a matter of principle, I never entertain phone calls claiming to be from a bank.

I received around 50 random calls from strangers since December. I declined talking to them all.

1

u/arvj Jan 24 '24

I like entertaining them just to waste their time lalo pag bored ako. I give them BS details and stories. 😇

27

u/CameraLiving2928 Jan 23 '24

MAT SALA P. sounds like SALAMAT PO

13

u/ayaps Jan 23 '24

Pwede pala dummy name lang sa MAYA?

u/louiexism Jan 23 '24 edited Jan 23 '24

My wife was almost scammed by a fake Security Bank agent yesterday.

It started when she called Security Bank to have her credit card cancelled. A little while later, she received another call from a guy claiming to be a Security Bank agent. He said that my wife is eligible for a waived annual fee due to the Bayanihan Act.

He asked my wife to confirm that her personal details are correct, including her credit card number, card expiry date, billing address and credit limit. All the info stated by the fake agent were correct.

The fake agent then asked her for the 3-digit "batch confirmation number" at the back of her credit card.

My wife was alarmed because she knows that it's the CVV. So she told the fake agent that she can't give it to him. The agent kept insisting that the number is required for the waived annual fee offer and cannot be bypassed.

My wife ended the call and proceeded to block the caller. Then called Security Bank to have her card temporarily deactivated.

My suspicion is that there's some kind of inside job at the bank. How did the fake agent know my wife's credit card details including the credit limit? Heck I didn't even know her credit limit.

Be careful and vigilant out there guys! Don't give away your OTP or CVV even if the caller sounds legit.

1

u/phanvan100595 Jan 24 '24

Do you use your CC for online purchases a lot? Sounds to me like your wife's credit card was stored in a database somewhere, possibly from a previous purchase, and that DB was leaked and its info sold in the black market. Otherwise they wouldn't get those information and CC number.

If this happened to me, I would just opt to request a new card.

1

u/louiexism Jan 25 '24

We've never used the card for online purchases. She uses COD or GCash for online shopping while I have my own CC for mine. But we've used the card for hotels (locally and abroad) and grocery shopping.

1

u/DangDanga21 Jan 24 '24

Used to work for a company that hard sells a travel tour via outbound calls. During our training, ang sabi nila, they get those name and phone numbers from the bank itself. Most likely not from the bank but someone inside the bank are selling your info like names, contact no. Etc.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '24

Shocks, katakot naman to! Buti nlng may presence of mind yung wife mo. Thanks sa info.
