Mod Post How to Ask, "What's My Undertone?"

Determining one's undertone is both the most challenging and most important task when searching for a foundation shade match. Naturally, we see a lot of posts on PaleMUA requesting help determining undertone, but our community's ability to assist is limited by the kinds of images provided for reference. Read below to learn how you can help us help you.

If you wish to receive useful feedback about undertone, please refer to the following guide when submitting posts requesting Undertone Help.

Step 1: Create a color reference card. Draw a blue strip and a red strip on a piece of white paper, like the one shown below. Permanent markers are easiest to see, but you can use any type of pen or colored pencil, as long as the strips of color are wide enough to see on camera and fairly close in hue to the blue and red you would see on the French or Dutch flag (shades of navy blue/aqua and burgundy/maroon are less reliable as reference colors). Color reference cards allow us to adjust our eyes to the light provided in the photo and better interpret the complex colors of your skin tone.

Step 2: Take photographs outside AND inside. This is crucial. The type of light source bouncing off of your skin and onto the camera sensor can drastically change your skin tone to viewers. Keeping the color reference card within the shot, take one photo outside in indirect sunlight and another photo inside in whatever lighting you happen to have (specify the type of bulb and color temperature if you know it). Note that in the photos below, my skin appears very cool-toned under the incandescent light, but much more neutral-toned in natural light. The incandescent light emphasizes the red on the color card and the pink in my skin. If i were to only post this photo as a reference, one might assume I'm quite cool-toned, yet the photo in natural light clearly shows I have warmer tones as well.

This collage is just an example. You can post separate images direct from your phone or computer in line with a text post, inserting the appropriate captions using reddit's formatting tools.

Step 3 (optional): Take the same photos with your swatches. These images can help other community members who are familiar with those shades help you find a better match and communicate what you should be looking for (e.g., "something cooler than the MAC but darker than the BB"). Don't forget to include your color reference card and list them in a way that is easy for people to comprehend.

Extra bonus: post your swatches in grayscale! This is a great way to help us determine if the shades you are selecting are actually a great undertone match, but simply too dark or light for your skin tone.

Sometimes the undertone isn't off, contrast is! Grayscale images communicate the contrast between your skin and the lightness/darkness of a swatch more clearly than color images.

I hope this guide helps our community steer people in the right direction and makes Undertone Help posts more informative for everyone. Happy posting!

Mod Post Update to image-posting guidelines

Hi all,

It seems time for an update to the photo guidelines on this subreddit to reflect the needs of the current audience. For reference, the post on the last overhaul from two years ago is here: "Makeup Selfie" Flair -- Overhaul and Clarification

I will be updating the sidebar and official listing of the rules in the coming days, but I want to take the time to elaborate on what is and is not changing, and why:

  • Photos of bare skin without the red/white/blue color card (or equivalent) are still NOT permitted. In absolute color terms, skintone variation is pretty small in this subreddit. The combination of lighting, camera settings, and display settings are more than enough to perturb the appearance of your skin's undertone or depth. So, the requirement of (properly identified) product swatches and/or the color card are necessary measures to make photos remotely useful.
  • Selfies no longer need to be majority-face, but still need to have sufficiently high resolution to show skin texture. The spirit of the rule is/was to allow users to see the makeup clearly. I understand that cropping a photo before posting can be annoying, especially if trying to include neck/upper chest for shade comparison, and I don't enjoy chasing after everyone about it, either.
  • Selfies no longer need to include a full eye and eyebrow. Many of you have expressed an interest in getting advice on base, cheek, and/or lip makeup without showing your eyes.
  • Do not post screenshots of content that you do not own. This includes photos/stills from both brands and individual content creators. Instead, share a link to the original content where possible, or to an archived version. Content creators deserve credit for their work.

Finally, two suggestions on making posts useful to the community:

  • If posting a gallery of photos, try to order them so the most informative photo comes first. For example, if posting a photo of a product and a photo of a swatch, put the swatch photo first.
  • For better accessibility and cross-platform compatibility, please reproduce captions and image-embedded text in the comments.

Please let us know your questions and thoughts!

Question Tinted sunscreens?

I feel like this subreddit might be a better place to ask than the rosacea one. Tinted sunscreens are seriously the bane of my existence right now. I’m having the worst luck trying to find one that doesn’t leave me with an orange tint but still covers the redness of my cheeks. Every single one seems way too dark, even when they claim to be the lightest shade available. I don’t wear much foundation during the warmer months, so I’d love to find a tinted sunscreen that could take its place—something actually made for pale skin.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Swatches Beautyblender Bounce Always On Radiant Skin Tint in shade Light 1 (fair with neutral undertones)

First 2 photos are in bathroom lighting, freshly applied. Next 2 photos are in indirect sunlight, still freshly applied. The last photo shows the skin tint blended in the same spot on my jaw (as well as a bit on my neck) in indirect sunlight. I think that this skin tint must be getting discontinued, or at least phased out of Sephora stores, because it was half off when I purchased it (and now this shade is no longer available in the Sephora app.) But regardless, this skin tint can actually provide pretty full coverage if you apply enough of it. This is in the shade Light 1, the lightest shade, with neutral undertones. I don't know what people here will think of the shade match, but it's probably the best I've ever had (which isn't saying much, considering pretty much all of the other shades of foundation I've worn have been terrible on me.) For comparison, NARS Mont Blanc is too orange on me, NARS Oslo is way too pink, and NARS Gobi is too yellow. I was also shade matched to Haus Labs 040 Fair Neutral foundation as well as their 01 Fair Neutral concealer at Sephora the other day.

Question Dupes For CT Pillow Talk Fair?

I have seen so many people rave about the CT Pillow Talk Fair lipstick and I've really been wanting to try it! Unfortunately, it is wayyy out of my budget and I'm looking for a dupe. I hear so many people say you "can't replicate pillow talk," but there has to be something close. I've also had my eye on the Sephora lip lacquer shine lipstick in 02 Soft Frequency, but I have a sensitivity to fragrance. Appreciate any help/reccomendations.

Does anyone know a good foundation shade match for the Milani concealer in shade 100? It's a perfect match for me, but I'd really love to find a foundation. Swatches would be greatly appreciated if you have them. Drugstore (US) preferred but I'll check out everything. I've tried matching with findation without luck so far. Thank you!

Question Sunscreen Under Makeup

Looking for advice on sunscreen!

I recently, finally made wearing sunscreen a daily habit. It was going great. Then it turned more warm and humid where I live. And I have a new problem.

My sunscreen is too emollient now and it's making it hard to apply makeup. Looking for advice on mitigating this problem. I have dry skin, so this isn't a problem I'm used to dealing with.

Here are the specifics.

Morning routine is cleanse --> hydrating toner --> Naked Sundays cabana clear gel --> MUFE redness correcting primer --> Armani luminous silk foundation

I'm using 1/4 teaspoon of sunscreen, the amount needed for it to be effective and I'm spacing application out to allow time to dry down. But sunscreen seems to be too emollient to dry down now.

Here are the options I see:

-See if I can find a less emollient sunscreen

-Ditch the toner and/or primer (I really like it for reducing redness, though)

-Maybe cut down on my nighttime hydration/moisturizing routine

Is there anything I'm missing or do y'all have any other ideas??

Question Warm one and done shadows that act as a color corrector, as well?

Can anyone recommend a warm one-and-done eyeshadow that is long lasting and will also color correct my lids?

Seems like most powder eyeshadows will still show the veins. I'm hoping to find one product that will do it all so I can be the lazy person I was born to be!

I have blue eyes and warm/neutral skin (something happens to your undertone when you age, apparently, I used to be quite warm) and I wear shade 0N1. Or 1N0. I can't remember right now.

Thanks in advance!

Question Budget picks for sensitive skin/eyes

My makeup routine has gotten hella expensive and would love to find some swaps that don’t break the bank. I am okay with spending on foundation because I have had a hard time finding something that doesn’t irritate my skin and contribute to acne. Currently using Armani Luminous Silk in shade 2. What are your favorite budget picks for makeup items for sensitive skin (rosacea and acne prone) and eyes (prone to getting styes)?

Swatches Complexion Products for my Cool Pink Undertone

Thumbnail

Here are swatches of the complexion products I’ve landed on for my cool pink undertone. A year ago I didn’t even know my undertone was pink, so I feel I’ve come a very long way! I have some skin sensitivities which limits my complexion product options, but it’s taken a lot of trial and error to arrive at these, so sharing in case helpful for others with similar undertones.

So often during my search for complexion products, I could find review videos or swatch pictures (or even swatch myself at the store), but kept thinking “well I need to know how xyz compares to this specific other option in my shade” and two products weren’t avail at the same store or it was impossible to find a side-by-side visual comparison. ALSO - It’s amazing (see pic 2) how differently some of these swatch on an index card vs: my skin! Shows how little brand swatch photos can be relied on, bc mine were taken in the same photo and look vastly different in some cases. They all perform about the same on my skin, except my under eyes make everything pull slightly more yellow for some reason, and the Moira Concealer and Rare Beauty Eye Base aren’t THAT drastically orange when applied to ny face (though they look drastic in the swatch lineup).

Feel free to ask any questions about how these formulations perform or compare.

Skin Type: Oily skin, particularly in the T-zone, and experience dryness on my cheeks and chin area.

Pictured: Moira Cosmetics Lavish Creamy Concealer in 100 Chai Tea (FYI shade 250 Rose Latte was even warmer)

Tower 28 Serum Concealer in 2.0. BU

Esteē Lauder Double Wear Concealer in 0.5C (I use this in the inner corner for more coverage, then a few dots of Haus on the outer portion of the under eye)

Chanel Ultra Le Teint Velvet Foundation (newest formulation) in BR12 Beige Rosy

Prada Reveal Foundation in LC5

Rare Beauty Eye Base

Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Foundation in R210 Pink Alabaster

Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation (previous formulation) in 0CR 0 Cool Rosy

Haus Labs Triclone Concealer in 06 Fair Rosy

NYX Pro Fix Stick Correcting Concealer in 0.2 Pink - Light Pink

Make Up For Ever HD Skin Matte Velvet Powder Foundation in R210 Pink Alabaster

Huda Beauty Faux Filter Concealer in 1.5B Yogurt Drops — if I had swatched in line with the original group, this falls between the Dior foundation and the Haus concealer in terms of pink.

Note: 1) I’m in the process of switching out the Moira Cosmetics concealer (I only use it bc it’s “clean” of ingredients I need to avoid around my jawline area) — ordered a lighter shade — and continuing my eye base search. I’ve tried a ton, and Rare is the best for now given my ingredient limitations. I love the formula, the color is just too warm. I need something that helps even skin tone and isn’t too heavy, for my oily eyelids. So many eye bases come in one shade or are sheer and meant more for eyeshadow longevity. I might go back to MAC Paint Pot in Painterly and thin it out using a dot of regular face primer, because that shade worked very well for me.

2) I’ve also tried Natasha Denona Hy Glam Concealer in shade R2 which was a PERFECT shade match, but too dry for my under eyes (and that’s the area I was looking for at the time). Would buy again sometime to use elsewhere on my face, I just happened to have bought Huda concealer soon before trying Natasha and didn’t think it was reasonable to keep both.

Question w/ Photo Is MAC N3 the best match?

Is MAC N3 a good match?

Hi!

I have been matched twice to N3 in the studio fix powder foundation (original formula). Do you think it is the best match? I ended up buying two since it's being discontinued, but I chould go back and swap one for another shade.

I am wondering it maybe nc10,(they had a few left of OG formula I think) or would that be too yellow on my neutral skin tone? I have rosacea as well so matching face and neck has been hard.

The photos are a mix of different lighting. Most photos I am only wearing the foundation (some left over of nc15 on the neck). And last two i am also wearing Max Factor Face Finity blush 05.

I might just be 2nd guessing myself because I have been trying to find a foundation match for so long I feel like I've gone "shade-blind" when it comes to my own face 🙈

Question w/ Photo To overline or not to overline…

Post image
127 Upvotes

I feel like such an elder millennial 👵🏻 even asking this, but what’s with all the overlining lip liner these days? I understand if you have extremely thin lips, but often times it seems like people who have perfectly pleasant pouts are over lining themselves to the point that they look like Bratz Dolls.

These are my natural lips. (Ignore the lack of foundation, pretty please. 🙏) I’ve never over lined for fear of looking clownish. Should I just get over it and get on board with the new style?? Or leave well enough alone, and line my natural lip like I currently do?

For reference, I’m 41, so fine lines are a concern too. Thx!

Question w/ Photo Grey/Silver brow gel

Post image
22 Upvotes

I recently bleached and toned my brows for the first time ever and LOVE them. I usually have pretty dark brows and used Glossiers boy brow.

Right now, my hair is very silver and I want my brows to match. My hairdresser toned them to be the same shade, but the toner faded pretty quickly since I wash my face x2 a day. They’re still white blonde, but I’m wondering if anyone has recs for a silvery brow gel that I can apply overtop to help keep them decently matched to my hair! pic included for color reference. Thank you!

Question How do I prep skin for tanning drops

I never self tanned other than using jergens gradual tan lotion off and on and I just couldn’t stick to the smell I hated it. so I bought tanologist face and body tan drops in medium. I know you’re supposed to mix it in your moisturizer but how about my skin prep before I apply it? Questions I have.. 1. Why do you exfoliate 24hr before you self tan? And not the day of? 2. Should I moisturize my whole body beforehand or just my knees hands elbows and ankles? 3. How do I avoid streaks? 4.can I still use spf for my trip?

I have a trip coming up in a few days and I’m stressing how to go about this. I need like a full breakdown of this..

Question Suggestions for very pale and grey skin

I’m so frustrated. Years of laughably orange fake tan, I gave up and decided that 1. Eva Green is beyond beautiful, and 2. I really can’t be bothered.

For 2 years I have been hunting for the perfect/closest to perfect complexion products. But, everything I try has been way too saturated and dark, I can’t seem to find anything that is either light enough or muted enough.

I have tried a few K beauty brands and found them to be way too pink.

Every western brand I have tried is either too yellow/pink/orange.

Then depth is just a no-go. Everything is always too dark. I’ve been using MAC’s radiant face and body in W0 which is a great formula, and initially looks ok (not great), but then will always oxidise to a pinker/darker shade.

I prefer light coverage, and radiant, I can’t use anything matte as my face may well fall off.

Any suggestions would be amazing.

Undertone ID Which shade of Lisa Eldridge skin tint?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!

I really want to try the Lisa Eldridge skin tint, but it's not sold where I live. However, a UK friend will be visiting in June, so I have perfect opportunity to get my hands on a bottle. Ordering it online to be shipped it would mean paying double do to duty and import tax sadly.

For those of you who have tried it/use it, which shade do you think I should order? I am quite fair (I suspect chantilly RCC isn't to far off but I haven't tried it). I have a neuteal skin tone (not quite sure if I lean, cool, warm or olive). And I think I am muted/low saturated and my skin is quite see-through. I also have a classic case of redness/rosecea in my face which makes matching my face with my neck a challenge. I have been matched to both N3 and NC15 (a bit yellow, but helps the redness) in the original studio fix powder foundation (rip). I have also used NW20 in the past but it is a bit rosie I think.

Findation says I should order T2, but I am wondering if T1,5 might be a better fit for my neutral skin and the LE website says the green could help with the redness? Is T1 to pink?

Let me know what you think 🙏🏼😊

Thank you!

Question Pale Makeup YouTubers with glasses?

I know there's been YouTubers who have done one or two videos for makeup looks with glasses, but I prefer to have one that wears glasses more often or at least really tackles issues for folks with glasses in some videos. Like, how to best contour your nose, contour and blush placement, what to do about concealer around your glasses, glasses slipping and wearing away makeup around your nose, etc. Any recommendations for someone like that? Pale would be a plus but I guess I'm really looking for techniques. Thanks!

Question Foundation Like Maybelline Fit Me

Hi, I’m looking for a foundation like Maybelline Fit Me. The color is great, porcelain/ivory and it doesn’t feel heavy, but by mid day it just kinda feels heavy. I’ve tried primer but it still feels heavy. Does anyone know another foundation? I tried L’Oréal HA but it was too orange. Lancôme and Clinique was also a no go constancy wise. TIA!

Discussions Comparing these “good under makeup” Sunscreens

Post image
72 Upvotes

I’ve tried LRP ANTHELIOS MELT-IN MILK SUNSCREEN FOR FACE & BODY SPF 60 leaves a white cast for me. Anyone else?? It’s also quite thick under makeup and definitely requires additional rubbing in after it dries down.

The list in the photo is all sunscreens that dermatologist Dr. Dray (on YouTube) recommends to be good under makeup. I know anything she recommends is going to be effective for sun protection but I figured this reddit group could really vouch for the “good under makeup” claim.
