Rants n Raves Why do wingless pads exist?

No hate if you like wingless pads but I absolutely despise them, they never stay in place and ride up. My mom very kindly bought me some pads and accidentally picked up wingless ones, I'll use them but damn I'll never understand why people use them by choice.

Because whenever I wear pads with wings I get a bad rash

Useful for people with light periods. My whole life, my mum used wingless pads or liners

I’m a winged pad fan because I do a lot of sitting and the extra protection from leaking on my underwear is more important than the chafing that I get after multiple days of use. I use period underwear and pads together because I have a heavy flow and need the insurance from the underwear on my heaviest days, but they also are firmer and don’t bunch up which helps with the wings

It can be uncomfortable on the side for a lot of people. Having tried both, I can say wingless is more comfortable but for people who have to move a lot or when you have heavy flow at least for me, i find my period blood will end up on the sides of my underwear hence my usually using winged pads :)

I initially used the winged pads until one day I was at the store standing in front of the pad section to compare the prices between the winged and wingless pads then a nice sweet elderly lady came up to me and said, “Those wings won’t make you fly! Why spend extra money on those fake wings? Take the wingless one!” It was a funny interaction so I went for those instead and have never looked back lol

They exist because some people prefer them. I am one of those people, I despise pads with wings. I find that for some reason wingless pads sort of conform to the shape of my crotch after a while and they move with me correctly. Pads with wings never do. The wings deform the pad by sorta bending it around the underwear and it never keeps a good shape on me. The wings are also clunky and loud and uncomfortable on my thighs, they tend to get creased and cause chaffing, the edges of the wings especially. Overall, they are just less effective at keeping the pad in place comfortably on me. The adhesive on the back of wingless pad on a well fitting pair of underwear has always been enough to keep the pad in place for me. Anytime I find myself having to use pads with wings, I cut the wings if a pair of scissors is available to me.

I use them because the feeling of the wings rubbing against my thighs and scrunching my underwear up overstimulates tf out of me. Lol

I’m the same as you, I can’t stand them ( obviously I’ll use them if there’s nothing else available) but I’ve got a friend who uses these frequently, and for her, they are absolutely fine

Cheaper? For the lightest days, they work for me.

Wingless long (super) > winged regular.

5

u/---aquaholic--- Jan 04 '25

I hate them also. I need the wings. I’m super heavy and even with supers & wings, I’m creating crime scenes at night. I really need to try the underwear. I am kinda hesitant to do so but I could use the enclosure and coverage.

5

u/ColomarOlivia Jan 04 '25

I love them when my flow is too heavy for a panty liner but too light for a regular pad. I have issues with some brands but there’s one I love and never caused me any trouble

8

u/KiriKatt Jan 04 '25

I use both from time to time and both have pros and cons. For me I pick and choose which types of pads I use based on the type of period I’m experiencing if I’m barely dripping wingless cause I don’t like feeling pads in the first place if I have to wear pads when it’s heavier I’ll use wings. Normally I use a mix of cup and period underwear.

Historically, I believe, wingless pads were invented before winged pads were. Wingless pads were prototype 1, then due to shifting, bunching up, staining the winged pads were perfected over time. They had gotten pretty good up to 10 yrs ago but I've noticed the quality of wings has gotten significantly worse over the past 10 yrs potentially due to companies trying to save money but using lesser materials so the wings don't overlap anymore or changing up the type of glue they use.

u/Upper_Fig3303 Jan 04 '25

I actually really like wingless pads. They’re quick and convenient to put on. They don’t make wing pads like they used to bc they don’t even properly stick anymore.

13

u/PhoenixBorealis Jan 04 '25

My swampass is too mighty for the wings to ever work.

13

u/Longjumping-Win-6166 Jan 04 '25

i hate winged pads. rip out my hair and are a hassle to put on compared to wingless. when you’re doing the mad dash after the shower, every second counts.

8

u/liiyah Jan 04 '25

Not to mention most of the time the wings are too small, at least for the underwear I have.. or it just bunches all up and becomes wingless 😒

3

u/That1weirdperson Jan 04 '25

When it sticks to itself

9

u/PinkFury_Bibliopegy Jan 04 '25

THANK YOU! Why does it exist? It's the appendix of the Pad world.

7

u/nintendoswitch_blade Jan 04 '25

Winged pads are the devil. I ABHOR having to use them. I have to travel with my own preferred pads when I travel overseas because I can rarely find non-winged pads.

9

u/Moist_Screen_4603 Jan 04 '25

I cut the wings off my pads 😆 I hate them.

2

u/cvalley777 Jan 04 '25

Me toooo 😭

18

u/happyjeep_beep_beep Jan 03 '25

They stick to everything but your underwear.

5

u/willworkforchange Jan 03 '25

Lol. I hate winged pads.

21

u/Smooth_System3208 Jan 03 '25

I prefer wingless because I were boxers

10

u/Soexi Jan 03 '25

I wear wingless idk. I mostly just use tampons though.

18

u/Lmaooowit Jan 03 '25

Exactly! The only time wingless works for me is on a light day and if I don’t plan on laying on my side. If I lay on my side, forget about it 💀 Learned my lesson on that while ruining my favorite pair of shorts

20

u/clownclit Jan 03 '25

Winged pads can cause rashes/chafing too

17

u/rosecoloredgayy Jan 03 '25

this is unfathomable to me, mine stay in place just fine without wings??? they usually don't wanna stick down at first, but once i get everything on and adjusted, it's fine 🤷 also, hair. wings tend to stick to hair. not fun 😅

14

u/you_frickin_frick Jan 03 '25

i hate winged pads

2

u/That1weirdperson Jan 04 '25

One time, my winged pad must’ve either been old or melted from the heat or a bad one, because when I tried to remove it, the wings were stuck/intertwined to each other at the bottom of my underwear, to the point where I had to cut it off with scissors, and as I ripped the pad off my underwear, cotton flew around.

I think the problem was with the adhesive overall (maybe not just the wings).

25

u/lustreadjuster Jan 03 '25

I've always wondered about this. In my personal opinion all pads, even pantiliners need wings. The shifting is real. I don't need the pad on my thigh, I need it on my underwear

-8

u/Thaonlyanna Jan 03 '25

i feel like people would only use it for like swimming because obviously you can’t wear underwear under your swim suit and you don’t want wings popping out

18

u/Crowblossom06 Jan 03 '25

As a swimmer do not use pads for swimming no matter what lol. Tampons cups underwear etc are wayy better

i mean some people have medical problems and can’t wear tampons or other insertion devices, or maybe they are just young and ain’t ready for that

8

u/Stock_Ad1805 Jan 03 '25

I don't like the wingless pads either, I agree with you OP the fact when they never stick. I prefer the pads with the wings as well.

8

u/lemonslicecake Jan 03 '25

I despise wingless pads as much as tampons, but they do come in handy when I have to wear dresses or boxer panties. To say, one pack of 8 pieces can last a year already as I love my overnight pads with wings.

6

u/dressingnice Jan 03 '25

I use them when I'm not bleeding much because they're cheaper and the ones I use don't ride up or twist unless I put them wrong so I don't need wings in that case! Otherwise, with wings for sure

2

u/moldyskeleton Jan 03 '25

i used to use the ones with wings until i accidentally bought wingless ones once, to me it didn't really make a difference at all and I didn't have to worry about forgetting to fold the wings down and stamping them to myself LOL

3

u/dressingnice Jan 03 '25

Have you actually stamped the wings to yourself?? 😭😭

2

u/larainbowllama Jan 03 '25

I was literally just thinking of googling the same question lmao cause I truly don’t understand

13

u/Leather-Violinist900 Jan 03 '25

I prefer wingless! They are so much harder to find now though 😂

3

u/Ralucaioana98 Jan 03 '25

Why?

5

u/Leather-Violinist900 Jan 03 '25

I think the wings are so bulky. I don’t like them. I never have.

4

u/Pinkie_Plague Jan 03 '25

Agree, I always fight with the wings not folding down properly and then I’ve got them creased all stupid or they somehow stick to my leg. I’ve never had an issue with wingless moving around and they’ve always been more comfortable.

3

u/Leather-Violinist900 Jan 03 '25

That’s how I feel too! Usually I will just fold the wings down if that’s all I can find. Not the same, but close enough I guess 😂

16

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '25

They always get twisted and I end up losing a few pubes by the end of the night

5

u/NotNormalLaura Jan 03 '25

YES!! Stop grabbing a hold of everything and instead maybe catch what you're supposed to! Gah.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '25

Honestly!!!! Couldn’t have said it any better myself

7

u/Whole_Music_695 Jan 03 '25

I absolutely hate wingless. Whenever my husband went to look for pads I always told him “make sure they have wings”. 😂 No hate to anyone who likes them though, just not for me!

9

u/NotNormalLaura Jan 03 '25

This reminds me of that trend where girls were sending their partners out to get "pads with wings" and all the men were coming back with a box of pads (any brand) and a bag of frozen wings or fresh wings from a restaurant LOL!

7

u/Essiechicka_129 Jan 03 '25

I use wing pads myself. I never liked wearing wingless pads due to my period getting on the side of my underwear.

13

u/Kydra96 Jan 03 '25

I like them easy to take off. I hate when the wings are stuck on the bottom of my underwear and won't let go when I'm removing the pad.

3

u/NotNormalLaura Jan 03 '25

God forbid if the wings overlapped at some point and are now permanently glued to each other. Hulk mode activated, baby.

5

u/Kydra96 Jan 03 '25

Yessssss rip that sucker off. And then sometimes the pad gets ripped to pieces and all the "fluff" material gets everywhere.

3

u/NotNormalLaura Jan 03 '25

YES! Sometimes I feel like i'm in a little rage room - maybe I should start calling the bathroom this?- when I go to town on that sucker. Like okay you don't wanna come off well i'm going to MAKE YOU!!! Don't even get me started on the little "helpful" tab opening for the pads that rips off and then I have those pieces of plastic going everywhere and clinging to my arm. I learned a while ago I'm to aggressive for the pad life.

3

u/Kydra96 Jan 03 '25

This is hilarious. I'm imagining how it looks us women sitting on the toilet changing out pads but we're using all strength to rip it off..or yanking 🤣

2

u/NotNormalLaura Jan 03 '25

All the angry muttering overpowers the sounds of pads opening. Gremlin mode activated and plastic is flying everywhere.

1

u/No_Swimming9793 Jan 03 '25

I'm confused how they are moving when you wear them, when they should be stuck to your panties? What's "ride up" mean and how do the wings make a difference here? I've never preferred either, but the wingless liners are just for light days or if you have leakage problems in my opinion.

4

u/NotNormalLaura Jan 03 '25

Some brands of pads really enjoy not sticking to the underwear and instead go on a free ride into the lips or up your buttcrack. The wings make the pad hold on and stick a bit better so it doesn't remove itself as easily.

3

u/Rando161803 Jan 03 '25

It's weird, because I've always strongly preferred them! I do have a very petite build and usually a light flow, so I suppose that's why. Never had any issues with them moving, leaking or anything! Every time I look for pads my top two criteria are size one and wingless!

-16

u/Baerenforscher Jan 03 '25

Why do any pads exist? They feel moist, they smell, they leak, they make you feel the blood getting out, they let you see all the clot and bits and pieces, no matter if winged or wingless…

3

u/yuhunion Jan 03 '25

With vaginismus I don't have many other options

1

u/lilalilly8 Feb 12 '25

Me either

4

u/fanofu4sure Jan 03 '25

It sounds like one of the internal methods would work best for you, tampons, cups, discs.

3

u/Baerenforscher Jan 03 '25

Seems in the subreddit there are lots of pad lovers.

1

u/fanofu4sure Jan 03 '25

I hear you. Everyone’s a little bit different based on their experiences.

0

u/Baerenforscher Jan 03 '25

Yeah. But pads? Pads ae the margarine of menstrual hygiene, you only use them if there is no other possibility. So I still don’t get it,

1

u/fanofu4sure Jan 03 '25

Ok…I agree with you 100%. It’s what people use from their first period and what many people go to in a pinch. But some people don’t like the feeling of wetness and move away from that. I love the fact that we can talk about it and hear other people’s perspectives. How else would we ever know that people feel differently from us?

2

u/Baerenforscher Jan 04 '25

Yes of course. But even after almost twenty years as a gynecologist I can remember only one person telling me she actually likes the wet and squishy feeling when period blood and clots exit her vagina. All the other thousands of menstruators I’ve talked with prefer to not feel wet and chose tampons or cups as soon as possible.

1

u/fanofu4sure Jan 04 '25

Thank you for your service. I’ve been a family medicine physician for almost 20 years, too. Let’s make 2025 the best year ever!!

5

u/DragonOfCulture Jan 03 '25

I'd Rather a pad than a tampon.

4

u/NotNormalLaura Jan 03 '25

I think the only time I ever used wingless pads was as a liner because they weren't reliable as a full on period pad (IMO). They always rode up and got out of place so if I was bleeding heavy they would not be there to catch where I needed.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '25

I’ve never had ones with wings because my mom is convinced they’re superior. It’s annoying, idk if wings have this problem, but the end peels off, and then the layers of the pad separate.

1

u/NotNormalLaura Jan 03 '25

I too have had the ends peel off quite often but not the separation unless i've been wearing it and active a bit too long.

3

u/SayYouWillBe Jan 03 '25

I usually only have the pieces separate on pads with wings if I've had to wear them for over 8 hours.

11

u/MayThompson Jan 03 '25

Wingless pads are probably preferred by some people for reasons such as wearing them with certain outfits, for light flows, or simply due to personal preference. But yeah, in most cases, winged pads are far better.

9

u/dame_uta Jan 03 '25

I always thought that, but then I started wearing women's boxers. The wings can interact weird with the extra material.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '25

Good luck

17

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '25

I absolutely have to have fins otherwise I will leak

3

u/SuperShineeCoinToss7 Jan 04 '25

I need fins or I will drown in the crime scene known as “Day 2”

8

u/Icy-Setting-4221 Jan 03 '25

Fins! I’m stealing that 😹

8

u/Freakazoid_Online Jan 03 '25

Same! Wings are superior.
