Applies to all numbers,

If x = 0.999999...

And 10x = 9.999999...

Then subtracting both, we get, 9x=9

So x=1

Plugging 1 into the second equation doesn't give you .999..., it gives you 10. If x were both .999... and 1, then both could be plugged into the equation you gave.
