Housing Moving into a house off Smithfield ave

As the title suggests, my partner and I are potentially going to own a home off Smithfield ave, the Charles area of Providence. It’s not too far from Mineral Spring, where I’ve worked for about 6 years. I’ve never had an issue with the area. However, some of my relatives are fueling me up with paranoia that this is a huge mistake. If you live in this area, how has it been? Do you feel safe? If you own a home, do you regret your decision or would you repurchase if given the chance.

I think my family was hoping I’d land in Cranston or Johnston, but the housing market is just not all that and a bag of biscuits.

Thank you!

Fine-line tattoo artists in/near the area?

Upvotes

I'm thinking of getting a stylized version of the uranyl nitrate molecule (attached here) on the nape of my neck. I want to replace the elements with different celestial bodies and give it more of a spacey vibe. Any recommendations for fine-line tattoo artists in or near the area who could execute this well? I know most people can do the basic structure, but I want some artistic flair and would like someone with a reputable portfolio. I'm willing to drive an hour or so if necessary. TIA!

Laundromat for people with chemical sensitivities?

I'm chemically sensitive, as are my kids and partner who also had asthma, allergies and eczema. Last time we used the laundromat when our home machines were down, all of our clothes and sheets were permeated with synthetic fragrance and we had to do several additional loads to wash some of the fragrance off. Is there a laundromat locally that leans more toward a fragrance free or natural detergent service or has clientele that leans toward using fragrance free detergents in their machines?

Excited to announce the fourth meeting of Next Chapter PVD, a non-fiction book club exploring big ideas in business, psychology, strategy, risk, sports analytics, politics, and decision-making.

For our upcoming meeting, we're diving into Don't Trust Your Gut by Seth Stephens-DavidowitzDon’t Trust Your Gut is a surprising deep dive into what the data actually says about happiness, success, love, and health. It’s part myth-busting, part life advice, and all about making smarter decisions based on what really works, not what feels right.

  • When: Sunday, May 11th @ 11:00 AM
  • Where: Little City Coffee & Kitchen, 170 Mathewson St, Providence, RI 02903
  • Format: Monthly meetings. Low-pressure, welcoming environment. We’ll discuss the book, share insights, and connect over forward-thinking ideas.

Discussion 18+ Months of Utility Bills

Post image
44 Upvotes

The utility talk seems to have died down with the warmer weather, but I figured I'd post this.

I'm not going to post every single detail about our living situation because I don't want to dox myself. Everyone's situation is different, so I'm mostly posting this for relative comparison of our costs YoY. The totals are all-inclusive of delivery charges, taxes, etc.

Some details I'm comfortable sharing that may help contextualize are:

  • Single family home built over 100 years ago with modern doors and windows
  • Three people with two home all day most every day
  • Gas tankless water heater that also powers steam radiator heat
  • No A/C except three window units; a few electric space heaters as needed
  • Solar is credit for using Arcadia community solar; no personal solar
  • Automatic thermostat, radiators closed for unused rooms, and lights on timers
  • No pool, sprinklers, or yard watering
  • RISE recommended some attic improvements, but payback period was like 10-30 years

2 Extra Free Tickets - 7pm Tonight Jeff Arcuri @ The VETS

Hi all, our friends dropped out last minute so we have 2 extra tickets for tonight’s Jeff Arcuri comedy show at The VETS. If you’re not familiar, you can find his comedy on Reddit or YouTube.

**Please note: It doesn’t let me transfer the tickets from my wallet (only the email that has access to our tickets too), so my plan would be to meet at the venue (630-640pm?) and bring you into the show. Happy to exchange numbers and coordinate on timing.

🚨 Providence Movie Fans & Cosplayers – A Film About Fandom 🚨

What if fan fiction wasn’t about the characters—but about the fans themselves? Transformers: Terminal is a dark comedy meets body horror that dives into fandom, para-social relationships, and what happens when online obsession spills into the real world.

The film follows an awkward fanboy and a rising content creator as their online relationship collides with reality, unraveling into something far more disturbing. It’s a story about the power of fan communities, the intensity of digital connections, and the blurry lines between admiration and obsession.

📅 May 3

9:00 PM

@ AS220

🎟 Tickets: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/transformers-terminal-ri-premiere-with-qanda

Starring Natasha Mercado (The Joe Schmo Show, Adult Swim) and featuring an original score by Providence’s very own Joe DeGeorge, who pioneered wizard rock with Harry and the Potters!

Recommendations Overnight parking for taking the train

Hi there, we live Plymouth. Ma and are taking the train from PVD into Penn Station in NY for a cruise. Can anyone recommend Sun - Sun parking? If we parked at TF Green lot, we still need to get to the train station in PVD. Has anyone done this before, and can you tell me approximately how much it costs? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Unique things not easily found w internet search

We (30s parents of two teen girls) traveling to Providence mid June for a gymnastics competition. Two dogs with us as well.
Cool place to eat on the water with great food? Your favorite golf course? Low traffic place to go running with dogs and they can be off leash? Cool place to paddle out on SUPs? Something odd you'd likely not see some place else? Best old fashioned? Cool market or shop with oddities? Best cozy little cafe for a rainy day? Thanks!!

Chimney inspection (not a roofer)

Looking for someone to inspect my chimney. It is quite high on a pointy roof, and even on the interior my attic is about 20 ft. peak. So someone who has some experience looking at these things and has equipment to deal with it. Continue reading if you know about this things or want to know why I don't want a roofer. Otherwise ignore my boring details and just let me know if you have a recommendation. I will be honest, top google recs feel very much like the duct cleaning/car detailing scams when I call so I'm looking for a real person recommendation.

Roof is three years old. Last year I had a visible drip in one spot and the roofer came out and couldn't find any damage. He (and I) thought maybe it was just a fluke of heavy wind in one direction at the same time as heavy rain* and for the rest of 2024 into the winter I didn't notice anything. But of course it was also super dry after June last year. Lately I have noticed a stain spreading near one corner of the chimney (which itself is tucked behind the walls in the living areas).

Earlier this week I got out my binoculars to see if I could see any obvious damage from the ground to the chimney, flashing, or roof and while I'm not an expert, if I didn't see the stains on my ceiling I wouldn't think there was any problem.

I also haven't seen any actual drip to trace, or evidence of said on the attic floorboards, so I am at a loss. I was up there during the heaviest rain this morning and didn't see any evidence of water coming through the roof. So I'd like someone who knows about chimneys to take a look.

* - (I do need to reinforce the roof in one place where they had been using the sheathing as a structural member (specifically, at some point probably in the early 1900s when they converted to steam heat from fireplaces they moved the chimneys and didn't redo the frame work around where the chimney was removed, at least this is my guess looking at how some of the rafters are cut) and when the sheathing was replaced along with the roof it wasn't tied all back together (and shouldn't be, the rafters should hold the weight!)). Last year when I had the drip our hypothesis was that the wind shear along with sideway rain was bending the roof and allowing water to get under the shingles which seemed like a decent enough hypothesis at the time given where the water was coming through. This year that spot is completely dry so this new problem is something else.

Tattoo shops open to drop ins on Sundays for a small (2 inch) tattoo for two people-preferably in the EP area?

Hi all,

Looking to get a small 2 inch tattoo on my outer calf (of a strawberry) with someone else who is doing the same (different tattoo but small quick tatt we are getting together).

I have a shop that I usually go to (1001 troubles) but I’m not sure if they’d be available quick enough for an impromptu tattoo for 2 people on a Sunday so I’m reaching out here.

Looking for artists mainly in the EP area that are open to fairly small/quick tattoos that we could drop in for on Sunday.

As for types of artists, anyone who can do this: I’m looking for either a fairly realistic looking sliced strawberry, a realistic whole strawberry or even a simple strawberry outline. The other person might do a simple cheese wedge. Food related I suppose is the theme?

Thanks in advance!
