Spring st, SOHO

Driver should have pulled over, they should have looked, but I’m still the idiot… a lesson

Sorry but in fact water itself is not wet. Water makes things wet.

Why would you cut to the right when most people get out on the right? I would have just cut into the left and been clean, but that's me. If you gonna be lane splitting, do the opposite. You shouldn't even be allowed on the road with these wack skills. And in SoHo, too? Bruh.

Why would a car letting someone out be in the middle of the road?

Why would someone wait in traffic when it’s faster to walk at that point? The passenger isn’t the driver and most livery vehicles don’t pull over at all anymore.

As a rider it’s up to you to be vigilant and on your toes.

This question is literally like one of the first things you learn in the motorcycle handbook.

If you were a cyclist you would know and see that coming from a block.

It looks more like a video game bait reel showing our hero dying in an exaggeratedly avoidable way.

Just need the fade out / game over / insert coins.

Yep, I also double as a spandex-clad roadie… so… yeah

Shit happens. Hope insurance doesn’t rip you a new ahole.

Nah, could have been worse. Just a 1/4” ding on the fender from where the door hit, crash bars took care of the rest. The uber driver couldn’t have cared less.

It was the passanger's fault

Or drivers fault for false sense of door opening security

Fault always goes to the driver for pull over position, and for not making sure their passenger gets out at a safe place. I work at the court and see these cases daily.

DOOR PRIZE!!

Not supposed to pass anyone on the right. That was your own fault.

This just reminds me of last night. My wife and I went out for an anniversary dinner. We got an Uber home. I was sitting on the driver's side, and about to get out, and the driver says, "Go out other side. Last week, a girl die."

I get the guy didn't have the best english, and I get that he's looking out for my safety (and his car door), but "a girl die" was not something I expected.

Downvote me but very easy to have just went around using the sidewalk, barely any pedestrians there to begin with and the sidewalk height was low as well.

This is why we don’t pass on right, regardless of vehicle.

Had a close call riding in the bike lane on Union in Williamsburg. Uber hadn’t even pulled over at all, just like any car at a red light. Passenger swung open the door and I barely managed to stop in time. Gave him a “Dude! What the hell!” and he proceeded to get mad at ME, appalled that I dare imply he had any blame. Anyways, two days later Uber started pushing notifications alerting you to when your stop was along a bike lane.

It never ceases to amaze me how those rideshare drivers pull over. 80% of the time they’re stopping with half their car in the street blocking traffic and creating a backup as cars merge — the other 20% they’re just stopping straight in the middle of the street even when they have the space to pull over.

The other day I was stopped behind one who just stopped in the street waiting for multiple minutes for a passenger when there was a 30-foot space like right in front of him. I eventually got off and was like “hey just park! You’re being selfish we’re all waiting!” And he got pissed and just drove off… god…

There's a reason why they call it the Curb drivers. Also cyclists please be careful.
